You're the only person on earth defending the referee and your last remaining vestige of credibility has just sailed down the river.

It wasn't a very good desicion, but it hardly the shockingly bad one that some people are making it out to be. Face it, had it been given for WBA against Sunderland (or two other crap teams), nobody would have cared half as much.

Which is my point. All I've said is that it was an understandable decision considering that Webb would have most likely only seen the Carrick touch and then Gomes clattering into him.

Ryan Giggs wins PFA Player of the year and Ashley Young wins young player of the year award

Ryan Giggs, in his 18th season as a professional, was finally awarded the highest honour possible by his peers, as he was tonight voted the Professional Footballers' Association's player of the year. The Manchester United midfielder described it as the "best" possible accolade, having beaten off competition from his club-mates Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Edwin van der Sar and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as Liverpool's Steven Gerrard.
Premier League team of the year: Edwin van der Sar; Glen Johnson, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra; Ashley Young, Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo; Nicolas Anelka, Fernando Torres

Sentimental choice from the players because there's no way in hell Giggs has been the best player in the premiership this season. He's started 12 of our 33 league games.

Ha, we got 2 players in there, must have been voted a couple of months ago surely? expected Chris Taylor to be there or there abouts but Neal Eardley? Even his own mum wouldn't have voted for him surely?

Thing about the penalty is that just because Gomes touched the ball doesn't mean it wasn't necessarily a penalty. Tbh I can't really remember how far the ball went so I can't remember whether Carrick would still have knocked it in if not brought down. And even if you decide it was, it's hard to blame the ref really because he didn't get much of a hand to the ball - only his fingertips and its direction was only changed very slightly so it was quite hard to pick up without replays.

Anyway, it's swings and roundabouts as said earlier.

Indeed - I'm thrilled for Giggsy as he's one of my all time favourite players, but this is a Lifetime Achievement Award packaged up as Player of the Year. He's been excellent for a lot of this season but there's no way in my mind he has been the campaign's single outstanding performer. Vidic or Gerrard would have been my pick.

As for the team of the year, I thought they might pick Giggsy out wide to let another CM into the side - I reckon Lampard, Cahill, Alonso, and Ireland could all consider themselves unlucky.

tbf its quite a clear deviation, it nearly went at right angles to where Carrick kicked it and there's no way he would have got to the ball after Gomes' touch. I've seen worse penalties given tho

Really? Couldn't swear to it but I seem to remember on the replay it looked as if Carrick had wrapped his foot around it fairly well and it was going fairly well sideways and Gomes's touch just helped it on its way. Could be wrong though.

Yeah, gets voted around Feb, early March IIRC, obviously we'd have dominated otherwise

How I saw it too, completely bemused by the whole thing. But being a United supporter won't help either of us on this one. :p

Think you need to clear up your definition of right-angles tbh.
