Kabir Ali is back and badder than ever. He currently has 2/9 off 1.3. Mason has 1/1 off 1 and Hampshire are 10/3.

Dernbach also has 3 quick wickets and now has 3/73.

Got to love the early season English conditions!

Easy to miss, but in Kent's 499-5 against the hapless students of Loughborough, one James Hockley hit 55 batting at number 7. Notable only for the fact that he's playing his first f-c match for eight years, having just rejoined the county.

So in terms of possible England players we had Moore(25), Davies(4), Tremlett(13-4-18-1), Kabir Ali (0, 6-1-22-2), Bell(84*), Trott(0). Bell definitely happiest with his performance.

Panesar should get a bowl sometime tomorrow, ought to be running through Leicestershire if he has ought about him surely ;)

Haha, bloody hell. Thought you were saying he was playing as a mature student then.

It really is an early-season of comeback kids. Hockley, Crowe and Anderson (admittedly the latter hasn't yet played First-Class cricket).

Next it'll be Scott Boswell back to avenge his 1-18-0 and 2-24-0.

And I see Mark Chilton fluked 2-3 in what's likely to be his only bowl of the season. 8-)

And I also see David Masters has started the season in typical style: 23 overs for 35. He was easily the most accurate bowler going around last season, wonder if he can repeat the trick this year?

So the season is underway! Happy days!

At Essex, it seemed Derbyshire managed to get a number of players in yet none of them were able to really make Essex pay. A score of 306/7 with Dan Redfearn top scoring with 50 shows a decent team effort. RTD was expensive picking up 2-95 off just 19 overs. Minus Kaneria and Napier, it is not a particularly daunting Essex attack, although as Rich says, Masters demonstrated his accuracy again, yet took just the one wicket.

A tough return to top flight cricket for Worcester. A track and conditions made for Cork and co. and the huge void left by Graeme Hick exemplified by today's showing. That said, they hit back pretty well in restricting Hants to 76/4. If only Simon Jones was available!!

A game between Leicester and Northants and it's South Africans making the headlines?? You'd never believe it. Thankfully Leicester have gone down the route of young players this season rather than the Kolpak option, but Andrew Hall took the plaudits rescuing Northants from 111-5 with 95* from number 6. Surely too high for him, not so it would appear. Peter Willey's son, David, made 60 on debut.

If Ian Bell has to make an impression in the early stages of the Championship season to regain his England place, then where would he ideally like to begin ? Of course, where every batsman would, at Taunton, against an attack that, as said previously, may be to his liking. Still the runs still have to be scored, and at 84* it's a case of how hungry he can prove himself to be. He said himself, he's learnt when you're in form you need to make it count. If he does, Trescothick and Langer may be mere spectators for a while yet. Jim Troughton in the runs also, remember him ?

Andre Nel started well enough for Surrey, 3-46 off 19 overs, the underrated Jade Dernbach picking up 3 also, albeit at a more expensive rate. Promising signs for Gloucester's top order with Kadeer Ali, Hamish Marshall, and Alex Gidman all chipping in with half centuries, but consistency may prove the main problem with the trio.

In the University games, Joe Gatting made his second hundred for Sussex in recent games, joined by Luke Wright and Rory Hamilton-Brown in making centuries. While Darren Stevens went big for Kent, he's currently 193*. Sam Northeast made 64, it's likely he'll be getting a few more opportunities this season with Neil Dexter and Matt Walker moving on.

Andy Flower the new coach of England aswell!! What a day!

On Masters, I thought he did an excellent job for Essex last season. They needed an experienced consistent performer to work alongside the younger lads such as Chambers, Westfield, Palladino, Ahmed, and Wright. Napier's improvement was a definite bonus, but Masters contribution of 42 wickets at 23.33 is a very decent return.

On tracks that assist him, he will be very difficult to score off, he'll get the movement and his accuracy is very impressive. On flatter decks at his pace, I think we may find batsmen more adventurous against him, getting him out of the attack is quite a vital part to the other side dominating proceedings, he's that important with the control he gives Pettini.

With Masters, it is a shame that he does not have that extra 5mph, because his accuracy, from what I saw last year, was Mcgrath esque and he often extracted enough seam movement and bounce from pitches.

Hundred for Ian Bell. Perfect start to the season for him. Really putting himself firmly into the selectors minds, and with a good few games left before the first Windies Test, he could really be in contention. Can see him scoring alot of runs at the start of this season!

couldn't have asked for a better fixture to start with to be honest, Somerset without Caddick at taunton. Was always on the cards. Since 2005 he averages something like 70 in April (even without this score)
