Canings used to be part of school life. I can remember at school people being sent to the metalworks teacher to get the cane. Banned now, of course, but it used to be an accepted method of discipline. I guess only Peter Roebuck would know if he was doing it for enjoyment.

I do have an issue with his bi-polar nature when writing though. Ponting seems to be either the best or worst captain in the world depending on whether Australia won their last match. It's becoming a bit of a joke.

Or that extremely abnormal people can be extremely intelligent and have careers as sportsmen and as writers.

Dunno. He at least finds gainful employment in the cricket media down under, which I doubt he'd do up here.

Any conviction that carries with it a whiff of child abuse (even if his victims were young men) tends to permanently ruin a rep.
