Henson set for long absence
Whilst his brother made his return from a long-term calf injury a fortnight ago, Eric Henson has received news that he will miss the vast majority of the season after tearing his anterior cruiciate ligament in a practice match with his hitting partner on Thursday. Henson, who was set to team up with his brother in the doubles competition, shook the injury off to start with, but was persuaded to have the knock checked out. "It is a big blow to my season, particularly when I think I was starting to play some pretty good tennis," a dejected Henson said to British television station Sky. "I'm not sure what [Rick] will do for doubles next week, because we were going to play together". Henson will require a complete knee reconstruction which will keep him out of the game until November at the earliest.
In other Wimbledon news, Warsaw finalist János Varga has withdrawn from the tournament after suffering a broken finger. The injury also takes out another men's doubles favourite as brother Zoltan Varga announced that he will not be competing in the absence of his brother. "[János] is disappointed that he is missing another tournament after he wasn't fit for some of the Masters Series tournaments earlier in the year", Varga wrote on the brother's website VargaBrothers.com. "I will not compete in the doubles tournament without him, and will instead focus my attentions on the singles competition".
Finally, in a cruel blow, world number 103 Domingo Gutiérrez Gómez was set to make his return to tennis in the main draw of the Wimbledon Championships after missing the lead up tournaments with a broken rib. In one of his first sessions back in full training, Gómez suffered a grade two hamstring tear which will keep him out for a month.
