Sixth seed
Jojo Mustard has again suffered a frustrating second round defeat on his favoured surface after bowing out to French veteran
Jean-Alain Depuis. Just one week after bowing out to
Dmitry Orlov in straight sets at the
AEGON Championships, Mustard gave up a one-set lead to the 36-year old Frenchman to end a frustrating fortnight ahead of the Championships next week. Mustard played solid tennis early against the world number 74, but after taking the first set suffered from an inability to serve consistently. With his first serve percentage dropping to around fifty per cent, the world number 32 was made to pay as the dogged Depuis managed to scrape a late break in the second set to level the match at one a piece. Come the decider, Mustard again was broken in the very first game as Depuis pulled off a stunning passing shot to beat his opponent positioned at the net; a break of service which would again eventuate in the final game of the match as Mustard put a backhand wide to seal his exit
4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Depuis' victory gives him a quarterfinal clash with out-of-form Chinese teenager
Zhijun Sun who won a topsy-turvy match against
Jean-Christophe Genghini. Mustard, meanwhile, will be forced to wait in hope to see whether he will earn a seeding next week.
Elsewhere, third seed
Becker Haas fell in straight sets to surprise packet
Tal Cohen. The world number 98 put a stop to Haas' only preparation ahead of Wimbledon in decisive fashion as he sealed a
7-5, 7-5 upset to book a showdown with
Zoltan Varga in the quarters. Meanwhile, Swiss eighth seed
Almen Benaglio finally found some consistency in a straight sets thrashing of
Gregor Gorshkov, but will face a tougher test in the form of seventh seed
Wayne Boyd in the quarterfinals.
- Seeded players out: Becker Haas; Jojo Mustard.

Second Round - 's-Hertengenbosch

At the
Ordina Open in s-Hertogenbosch, unseeded CWLander
Rob Bowenburg has earned a place in his second career quarterfinal after easily accounting for local wildcard
Wouter Veidman in his second round clash. Off the back of an upset win against
Sergio Joaquin in the first round, Bowenburg came into his match with the Dutchman full of confidence. Veidman held service first up, but from there was no match for the exciting Bowenburg who controlled the court and ran hard in a straight sets win. After closing out the first set 6-1, The Lob was troubled early in the second as Veidman brought up two unlikely break points. But Bowenburg managed to save both, and reply with a break to love of his own as he cantered to a
6-1, 6-4 win. Bowenburg now faces top seed and world number three
Radivoj Daneu in what seems to be an impossible matchup for the CWLander after Daneu did just enough to scrape past big-serving Latvian
Ivars Emsis in two straight tiebreakers. Bowenburg's previous dalliance in the quarterfinals came at the
Johannesburg Open earlier in the season, where he fell to top seed
Zhijun Sun in an embarrassing
6-2, 6-0 defeat.
Meanwhile, third seed
Danijel Micic looks on course for a semifinal showdown with countryman Daneu after he took no time to dispatch China's
Li Ming-Wang. The tall Chinese player lacked any real weapons against the aggressive Micic who usually only toils against the more dogged and hard-hitting players. The volatile Serb will face his toughest test yet in the quarters against
Zbiginiew Boniek who upset fellow Austrian
Heinz Hainisch in straight sets. In the bottom half,
Juan Moreno produced another straight sets victory over a French qualifier by edging past
Christophe Durand; the second seed avoiding a quarterfinal with fifth seeded local
Maarten Berg after the Dutchman fell in three to
Hugh James. In the third quarterfinal,
Pierre L'Estrange and
Patrick Pascaul will square off in an intriguing all-French quarterfinal.
- Seeded players out: Maarten Berg.
Boodles Challenge
Buckinghamshire
Boodles Challenge Draw (Finals)
Day One: The Boodles Challenge at the Stoke Park Club got underway with one favourite winning, and the other bombing out in two exciting first round clashes. In the marquee match of the day, top seed and local hero
Henry Charles continued to build up his
Wimbledon aspirations after he picked up a straight sets victory over forty-year old Russian
Vladimir Gryzlov. After a semifinal appearance at Queen's last week, Charles looked to build on that form against the eighth seed. It started well for the Brit as he broke service early to take a commanding 3-0 lead, and whilst Grzylov fought back well, he was unable to overturn the deficit. But the knowledgeable Stoke crowd were treated to a more competitive second set as it was Gryzlov who took the unlikely early break. But the oldest player on tour could not maintain his lead as Charles edged back into the contest and eventually sealed a
6-3, 7-5 win over the super-fit veteran.
His opponent in the semifinals will be sixth seed
Paolo Mandonna who stunned American
Morgan Carter in straight sets. With both men in scratchy form, it was the lanky sixth seed who started the best as he raced to a 4-1 lead early in the first. Carter could only hold service once more as Mandonna broke serve again to seal a set to love lead. In a closer second set, Mandonna again got the better of the world number thirty as he advanced to the quarterfinals
6-2, 7-5. Whilst Mandonna and Charles will square off on Thursday, Carter and Gryzlov will square off to earn a place in the fifth place playoff.
Day Two: Fourth seed
Heath Davis has suffered an unwelcome start to his
Boodles Challenge as he fell in straight sets to fifth seed
Kim Vollan. With just two spots separating them on the world rankings, many expected a close encounter between the two power hitters, but were left sorely disappointed as the Norwegian crushed the CWLander. Davis last week fell in the second round at Queen's, and hoped to put in a better performance this week. That didn't start well as Vollan easily held his service to love, whilst Davis was dragged to three deuces before he managed to scrape level at 1-1. The Kiwi-born Davis then dropped service the game after to find himself perilously behind 1-3; Vollan going on to close out the first set comfortably. The second set saw Davis produce a better fight, but he was still overwhelmed by an on-song Vollan who, on his day, is nigh on impossible to stop. With eighteen aces under his belt, Vollan waltzed to the semifinals
6-2, 6-3.
His opponent will be second seed
Rick Henson whose promising rehabilitation continued with a straight sets thrashing of
Oliver Engel. The Luxembourg number one troubled Henson early by breaking serve in the third game, but quickly found himself on the back foot as Henson lifted a gear as he sounded out a warning to his competition. The world number eighteen took the first set 6-4, and went into the second with a mountain of momentum behind him as he cruised to a semifinal showdown with Vollan
6-4, 6-1. Henson, who injured his calf back in April, will hope to produce similar form next week to begin his ascent back inside the world's top ten.
