What's Your Aussie Ashes Squad?

Pup Clarke

Cricketer Of The Year
If Lee and Clark are fit they'll no doubt both be in the squad, not sure why Hilfenhaus is a dead cert to most, still has much to prove.

Katich, Hughes, Rogers, Ponting, M Hussey, Clarke, North, Hodge/Klinger, Haddin, Hopes (Watson if fit), McDonald, Hauritz, Johnson, Lee, Clark, Siddle, Bollinger

Hilfenhaus, Jaques and Wade as reserves

XI could be...

Katich, Hughes, Ponting, Clarke, M Hussey, North, Haddin, Johnson, Lee, Clark, Siddle

That'd be a good XI.

I'd rather take Cameron White than Hauritz - they're both equally inept with the ball, but at least White can score a run or 2. And he loves the English conditions.

Wade should definitely go - Hodge is no chance. And if Klinger goes, they may well leave Rogers behind and take a younger player for the experience (Ferguson?) - not suggesting the younger player 'deserves' to go, more that they would be taken along so they can see what it was like to be on tour.

Unfortunately Hilfenhaus will definitely tour - but no clue why. Bollinger should definitely be ahead of him in the thinking.

My opinion:

- Katich
- Hughes
- Ponting
- Hussey (although getting closer to being dropped)
- Clarke (two poor tests don't mean much)
- North
- Haddin (no obvious replacement - Wade/Paine are still learning)
- Johnson
- Clark (should replace McDonald, or maybe Hilfenhaus)
- Siddle
- Hilfenhaus (bowled better than what his SA stats indicate)

- McDonald
- Hauritz/Krejza (neither turns me on, so to speak, but one should probably be picked)
- Lee (as backup only, if that)
- Hodge/D Hussey (although Hodge's technique is flawed against away-moving balls)

Lee was out of form before injury, it'll be long road back it he does make.
If think Clark is much more likely prospect.
North will definitely tour but may not get picked.
McGain will tour and should get a chance in a tour game but if he doesn't impress then hopefully he won't get picked.
If Watson's fit he should be in the squad.
Mike Hussey's form is a real worry.
McDonald hasn't got a lot of support but he's doen the job and if you aren't got a spinner then his type of bowling could fill that role especially in England.

I think the slectors will probably start with the idea of feilding this side...

Katich
Hughes
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
North
Haddin
Johnson
Clark
Siddle
McGain

but I think we may be better served with...
(Even though it is a very tough call on Hussey and Watson's got to stay fit and in same form with the ball)

Katich
Hughes
Ponting
Clarke
North
Watson
Haddin
McDonald
Johnson
Clark
Siddle

It is basically the same side that won the two test in SA but with Clark for Hilfenhaus and Watson for Hussey. Watson should be able to minimize the workload on Johnson

Would Watson be able to bowl by then?

I certainly hope so!

I like McDonald as the 'spin option' in England. He'll definitely keep an end tight, and isn't hopeless on the field and might just score some runs. Under the right (read overcast) conditions, he'd be a halfway decent bowling option (I think his first class average is better than that of Hilfenhaus).

Bollinger should be ahead of Hilfenhaus - at test level Bollinger bowled MANY more wicket taking deliveries, and just had to work out his nerves (see him bowling too short in the first dig in Sydney). He swings the ball quite a bit too under the right conditions. If they both go, they might as well face off in the tour game for a spot...

Bollinger will miss out imo. Lee and Clark will both go, but whether either or both play 1st up, who knows?

If I may, people in this thread have spoken about Brett Lee as if he's a mark for the squad (I did put him in mine, but only as a wildcard of sorts - Bollinger, et al - could easily replace him).

I wonder why, though? I mean:

- His average in England is 45+
- He wasn't in form when he was omitted before Sydney
- His arrogance towards it all: assuming that the IPL will adequately prepare him for the Ashes
- Time to get back into form: he probably won't have enough

The following XI are certanties IMO

Hughes - 20
Katich - 33
Ponting - 34
Hussey - 34
Clarke - 28
North - 29
Haddin - 31
Johnson - 27
Lee - 32
Clark - 33
Siddle - 24

That leaves 4 more back-ups

Rogers - 31: 1195 runs @ 74.68 for Victoria and 1372 runs @ 57.16 for Derbyshire last year means that if he's not selected now, he never will be.

Watson - 27: Still the best allrounder in the country if fit, however would likely only play if a specialist spinner was in the side (i.e. Katich, Clarke & North to spin with an all-pace attack)

Hilfenhaus - 26: Performed well enough in SA to make the squad ahead of Bolinger

Hauritz - 27: leading FC wkt taker for spinners last year and seems to be the less likely to go for >100 runs per innings.

Mate I thin kit's a combination of a few things.

Firstly, he probably has, and deserves to have, a fair bit of credit with the selectors given his very good 12 months preceding India and the fact he was obviously injured when he came back is something of an excuse.

Secondly, even if he'd bowled complete crap for say 2 years before the Ashes and hadn't been out, knowing our selectors ATM they'd pick him anyway.

Have to say, his selection or non-selection is porbably one of the more difficult ones I can think of for the selctors. Can't say I'd blame them if they went either way.
