8:23 pm Abandoned. Game has been called off. Now that's that.
:( Another game ruined, and NZ probably lucky not to go 2-0 down.

I had thought this series couldn't possibly have any worse luck with the weather than the Windies series... but I was wrong. All three domestic games around the country today got a full or near-full day of play FFS!

It is a miracle, but apparantly the forecast for Christchurch on Sunday is good.

Expect a black rain cloud to hover over Jade Stadium on Sunday whilst the rest of Christchurch is baved in sunshine.

Sweet!! really hoping for a full game, and to see ryder and McCullum unleash...

Does anyone else think that Jesse Ryder has to make runs at the top of the order soon. With the way the selectors are going, or treating players he must be close to getting the chop. He has played around 15 ODI's and he has only scored one 50?

Push Guptill up to opener and play Broom higher up the order, who I'm feeling realy sorry for as most times he has had to bat for NZ it's time for him to just hit out.

IF (IF) Ryder was given the chop in ODIs, I'd probably back Watling to get the gig.

Tbh, if Ryder's international career follows his domestic one, he's going to be a test/20/20 specialist. His List A record isn't great, but its only 15 ODIs, I'd give him a few more. He hasn't been absolutely atrocious like Flynn at them.

Yeah Watling would be a pretty good choice, would much rather see Jesse Ryder perform though. And in time I think he will, he has all the natural talent he just has to settle down abit.

I really don't know why Ryder still opens the batting. Sure, he does it domestically, but his ODD record is terrible anyway so it's hardly a great endorsement. He has minimal footwork but has a good eye, good hands and all the shots which makes him ideally suited to batting around 5 or so. The new ball's obviously going to exaggerate the limitations in his footwork.

I could see why he opened before Guptill was in the mix but I really think he should be going back down the order now.

Thats taken by Elliott/Broom/Styris though.

Plus we'd be having Taylor at three, I like him at four better tbh. Unless when McCullum can keep again we go with:

McCullum
Guptill
Someone (Watling or How probably)
Taylor
Ryder
Elliott
Oram

Yeah so do I, but I think it's worth moving him to get Ryder down the order a bit. Even if Ryder batted three himself, or four with Taylor at three, I think it'd work a lot better.

As it stands, you're opening the batting with a pinch-hitter trying to bat through the innings and a middle order batsman with no footwork and then sending an opener in at #3. It just doesn't make any sense.

You don't want a fatty in the middle overs of ODIs though. It's bad for the whole running-between-wickets thing. If he's being moved down I'd want him to be part of a floating batting order, maybe coming in ahead of Elliot depending on how late in the innings it is or the general situation.

Surprisingly though, Ryder is quite good between the wickets.

I'd leave him with McCullum for the time being, though. We need a consistent top 3 if we want to challenge the best.

Inzy was a pretty good number 5 (and 4) for Pakistan...

Ryder opening the batting in ODIs is a good thing. How often has he helped get us off to a decent quick start. Sure he hasn't really gone on but 56/1 after 10 overs is sure better than 30/2 after 10.

Yeah would like Ryder at first drop at least. I don't fancy Ryder at all as a pinch hitter, he is a gifted strokemaker more than an out and out bludgeoner and when he tries to force shots that aren't on, he gets out.

He was talking about McCullum as the pinch hitter.

To earlier comments made on this page...why on earth would Ryder get dropped for Watling when we already have a perfectly good opener in Guptill? You say Ryder opening makes no sense...well then that makes even less sense.

If the order was going to be reshuffled (which at this time I don't think is necessary) i'd like to see:

Guptill
McCullum
Broom
Taylor
Ryder
Elliott
Oram
Vettori
Butler
Mills
O'Brien
