I want Boycott, Gavaskar and Hutton in the team. Will they be available for the middle order if they don't get picked for opening?
if any of them scored 2000 runs at an average > 40 in non-opening positions they will be available. if not, no. dont want to make it too open and let the team drift into a fictional combo SS.

Why? Hutton, Gavaskar and Boycott were certainly good enough to bat in the middle order. It wouldn't make sense to let a lesser batsman in just because he batted one position below these guys. Opening is a specialist's job, but not that much. Sehwag is a middle order batsman by trade, for example, and still prefers playing there.

i disagree. it is very much a specialist's job.

the three you've mentioned were good enough to bat anywhere. but did they bat enough in those positions for you to include them is the question. if they did not, then we are getting into intelligent assumptions.

here are their records in non-opening positions in the given time period

Hutton 8 7 3 250 62* 62.50 0 2 0
Boycott 1 2 0 23 13 11.50 0 0 0
Gavaskar 1 1 1 0 0* - 0 0 0

It will be impossible to include people with such stats simply because they were good at doing something else.

you have the 3Ws, chappells, compton etc to give you enough headache for the middle order. leave these guys here.

sorry to disappoint you SS. but i really dont want to list out all players and let the forum members choose any combination of XI players out of that. there is no fun.

Well, it's your poll. I'm just saying that if Sehwag could bat up top, and Hussey could bat in the middle, I think Hutton, Gavaskar and Boycott could have too. And to me, those were among the top six batsmen in this time period, and should get in.

Obviously, you may disagree and its your poll, so it's whatever you decide.

Why would you want Boycott anywhere else but opening? Unless you are expecting a lot of collapses, and then you could have KB is his right position to handle it:)

I woiuld have thought that Chappell batted more often at No.3? (could be wrong though)

that is ian chappel. 13 centuries at an ave of 53 at no.3.
both g.pollock and g.chappell were masterly at no 4.

g. chappell at no.4 37 60 8 2797 247* 53.78 10 13 5

g.pollock at no.4
23 37 4 2065 274 62.57 7 8 1

the batting order is going to be pretty difficult to finalize.

how about sobers at no.3?

GS Sobers (WI) 1956-1963 14 17 3 1009 365* 72.07 3

If we pick an allrounder at 6 then I think that's a good idea - it would mean that Sobers would be the sixth bowler rather than the fifth, allowing him to bat at first drop without being overly taxed by his bowling duties.

R.G. You're getting Pollock and Headley mixed up I think. :)

once the last poll is over, lets select a skipper (hutton is my only choice TBH) and then combine the two teams to create the post WW 2 team
