Has been a great servant, but time to go. Hopefully some of the others will go with him like Nicholas and Taylor.

I thought I would just interrupt this thread to let you know about

UNDERBELLY a tale of two cities.

Gosh, its a brilliant show. Here's Mark Nicholas to **** in his pants in anticipation of the Greatest Show Ever Made (TM)

CRACKERJACK

Thank you Mark. Anyway, its coming soon to Channel 9. WATCH NOW!!!

And, back to the thread.

What an absolute legend he will be sorely missed.

Here are a couple of my favourite benaud quotes:

My mantra is: put your brain into gear and if you can add to what's on the screen then do it, otherwise shut up.
Richie Benaud

The hallmark of a great captain is the ability to win the toss, at the right time.
Richie Benaud

The slow-motion replay doesn't show how fast the ball was really travelling.

I don't think Greigy will be leaving any time soon - I heard that supposedly he has a lifetime contract with Channel 9 after he led the exodus to World Series Cricket in the 1970s, as a token of Packer's gratitude.

Haven't really enjoyed him as much this past year so probably a good call. Was the best in the business though and will be missed.

Richie may have declined, which still probably left him above Greig, Chappell, Slater, Taylor, Healy, Lawry, Nicholas, and O'Donnell over the Test series.

There have been plenty more things dragging down the coverage, before Benaud.

Yeah, but Packer's dead. If they feel he's impacting the coverage they'd get rid of him ASAP, imo.

Truly the end of an era - I've never known an Australian summer of cricket without Richie. He might not be the force he once was but I reckon I'd still rather listen to him over any other TV commentator. He was our generation's McGilvray, and will be greatly missed.

It'll be a sad day. But what is even sadder is that Nicholas is his supposed replacement.
That's it. I'm hunting the ****er down and evicerating him. How can anyone want such a sycophantic tosspiece commentating.

Jeremy Coney should be groomed as Benaud's replacement. I'm sure Channel 9 viewers could be convinced he's an Aussie.

Don't despair. I'm going to write away for the job. I promise to post my application on here, and I assure you if I happen to get the job then it won't change me.

However, you ****s won't see me for dust!

Nicholas grooming has been more frantic over the past two seasons than that of my aunt's prize poodle.

Disgusting.

I'm older than most posters onhere, and I can't really remember a summer without Richie. It'll be a bit weird to STL.
He's been commentating on Test cricket in Australia and England since the early-1960s. It's highly unlikely anyone on here can remember a time before him.

Anyway, well played on a fine innings. I don't think the cliches (the Symonds "be there at the end" one has irritated the hell out of me for the last 5-6 years) are anything new, but apart from that, he's (as described by Graeme White) "the doyen" of cricket commentary. I'm used to English cricket in the post-Benaud World now, though - his last summer over here was 2005.

No need for convincing, it's the law - if he sets foot in Australia and succeeds, he IS an Aussie. You boys should know that by now.
