Serbia Open I
Qualifiers - Belgrade

Draw

CWLander Martti Korpinen has earned himself a spot in the main draw of this week's Serbia Open with a straight sets victory over Moroccan Omar Allali in his qualifying final. The seventh seed dropped just one set in his three matches; a 1-6 thumping at the hands of Croatian Tomislav Kurtovic the only blemish on an otherwise impressive qualifying display. After edging past Kurtovic in the first round, Korpinen began to grow from strength-to-strength; the CWLander booking a spot in the finals with a dominant victory over Israel's Ya'acov Mizrahi. Against Allali, Korpinen looked dominant as he advanced with a 63 63; but will face much tougher opposition in the first round of the Serbia Open proper against second seed Radek Špidla.

Elsewhere, Lawrence Trumper-Smith failed to capitalise on a strong start in the second round against top seeded Croat Stipo Vučemilović. The CWLander looked in sparkling touch early as he claimed the opening set 6-4, before Vučemilović stormed back into the match to send the second to a tiebreaker. The Croat took the breaker in a canter and, with momentum on his side, cruised to a 46 76(2) 62 victory. Trumper-Smith did, however, produce a solid first round display against Radu Ghitá of Romania to ensure he walked away with at least some prize money.

Qualifiers: 1-Stipo Vučemilović (CRO); Cameron van der Cleer (NED); 7-Martti Korpinen (CWL); WC-Endri Perlleshi (ALB)
Wildcards: Savo Petkoviä (SRB); Slavko Knezevic (SRB); Ivars Emsis (LAT).

Not even a Norwegian to cheer on this week. The six-syllable Croat who conquered Trumper-Smith was one of my creations, iirc, so will hold out for him.

'mon Korpinen, too.

Looking to cause a massive upset here. Word on the street is that Špidla has turned to heroine after dropping ranks.

BMW Open
Round of 32 - Munich

In the shock of the first round of the BMW Open in Munich, Casablanca champion Jefferson Drake has been defeated by world number 100 Viktor Vuriak in straight sets. The second seed came into the match as overwhelming favourite, but found himself tested against a determined Ukrainian opponent. Vuriak started strongly by going ahead a break, and despite dropping his advantage at crunch time, he went on to take a one-set lead over his higher ranked opponent. Drake looked to intimidate Vuriak early in the second, but again dropped his service early by firing a second serve well wide of the box. However, he reproduced the late break to bring himself level with the world number hundred; the second set heading to another tiebreaker. But Vuriak held his nerve to pick up one of the biggest wins of his career - advancing to a second round clash with local wildcard Alex Peters 76(6) 76(4).

Elsewhere, Spas Delev proved too good for powerful countryman Roy Daniels as he took the honours in their first round clash. Delev took the first set in convincing style, before Daniels stormed back into the match to take the second in a tiebreaker. But the world number 64 didn't have the tank to continue his form into the decider; Delev coming out from the break with more fire and flare than his higher ranked opponent as he cruised to a 64 67(5) 61 upset. Daniels was joined in the loser's pile by struggling CWLander Rob Bowenburg whose return to his birthplace was not a happy one. Drawn against Colombian seventh seed Diego Hurtado, Bowenburg gave up a one-set lead to be outclassed 46 64 63.

Seeds Out: 2-Jefferson Drake (CWL); 6-Patrick Pascaul (FRA).

Round of 32 - Estoril

Paraguay's Aldo Marín produced the only real upset of the first round in Estoril as he came from a set down to defeat seventh seeded Italian Antonio Bachunelli. Marín dropped the first set thanks largely to a poor service game in the penultimate game, but soon found his footing as a result of an early break in the second. Whilst Bachunelli stuck with the world number 128, he clearly was not at his best and was soon dispatched 57 64 76(6). Elsewhere, Americans Jason Hall and Darcy Cowan began their quest to a finals showdown with contrasting first round victories. Whilst the world number one belted local wildcard Pedro Barbosa in straight sets (62 63), Cowan was made to fight for his 64 57 61 victory over qualifier Javier Villaneuva.

Seeds Out: 7-Antonio Bachunelli (ITA).

Whilst Jojo Mustard's second tournament as a seeded player again suffered from an unconvincing start, he still secured a hard-fought victory against Macedonian Branko Arsov in the first round of the Serbia Open. The grass-court specialist has surprised many this season on clay and has been rewarded by a meteoric rise into the world's top fifty, and in a tight first set he showed he has the steel of a top fifty player as he produced a perfect tiebreaker. Bagelling Arsov following a see-sawing set should have filled the CWLander with confidence, but the seventh seed frustratingly dropped serve early and was unable to claw back to level. With the match headed to a decider, Mustard took the time between sets to regain his focus; the seventh seed benefitting from his renewed concentration as he eased past Arsov to seal a passable 76(0) 46 62 victory.

Elsewhere, qualifier Martti Korpinen was unable to effect an upset against second seed Radek Špidla in their opening clash. Whilst the CWLander showed flashes of good form, he was eventually overpowered by Špidla who continues to improve on the clay surface. In just under ninety minutes, the Czech monster sealed a comfortable 63 63 victory to advance to a second round clash with countryman Václav Zeman who came from a set down to defeat Macedonia's Gjorgi Dinov in three sets. Unable to avoid an upset, though, was Hungarian drawcard Zoltan Varga who was shocked in straight sets by world number 81 Yordan Zakov. Varga was bagelled in the first set tiebreaker and never recovered; bowing out 76(0) 64.

Seeds Out: 4-Zoltan Varga (HUN).

Bowenburg outclassed by the 7th seed? Ripped off more like it. Can't wait until the clay court season stops.

I'm taking a five day break away from Tennis, going to spend it with my mum.

Pleased to have put another win on the board. Looking forward to not having to face a seed in the 2nd round in the near future though 8-|

Mustard's record must be poor in the second set after winning the first. However, must have a good record in the 3rd after dropping the 2nd. Should be getting through the early rounds with easy wins. Will need to pick it up to make the semis. Pleased to get the win and possible rankings jump.

Spas Delev's good start to the BMW Open came unstuck after a straight sets loss to world number fifty Atthaphol Sae-ul in the second round in Munich. After edging past countryman Roy Daniels in the first round, Delev came into the match with the eighth seed with a bundle of confidence - confidence which showed early as he held service strongly. But the Thailander soon ensured that Delev's confidence would wilt as he broke service to take the first set 64. From there, Delev struggled to get into the rallies as Sae-ul grew from strength-to-strength; the eighth seed waltzing to an impressive 64 62 victory to set up a quarterfinals clash with top seed József Boros.

Elsewhere, it will be an all-German showdown in the quarterfinals as fourth seed Becker Haas is drawn against Gunther Heug on home soil. Whilst Haas' 62 63 over David Jones wasn't surprising in the slightest, the 61 62 upset of seventh seed Diego Hurtado by Heug was a bigger shock to the Munich crowd. The winner of that clash will face off against an unseeded player in the semifinals.

Seeds Out: 5-Dwayne Murdoch (USA); 7-Diego Hurtado (COL).

Local prospect Valter Cordiero has been knocked out in the second round of the Estoril Open following a 75 36 63 defeat to Italy's Massimo Prodi. The sixth seed looked a big chance of taking the victory after claiming the second set, before the Italian 24-year old produced his best tennis to secure the victory. Prodi now faces top seed Jason Hall in the quarterfinals after the American survived a late scare against qualifier Mikel Fosdike to advance 61 75.

Seeds Out: 6-Valter Cordiero (POR); 7-Roberto Santos (BRA).

Serbia Open I
Round of 16 - Belgrade

Draw - Top Half

The Serbia Open will have a CWLander in the quarterfinals after Jojo Mustard came from a set down to defeat world number 95 Boris Denisov in three sets in the second round in Belgrade. But it will get tougher for the seventh seed; his next opponent is second seed Radek Špidla who continued to surprise on clay after a 61 75 victory against fellow Czech player Václav Zeman. Mustard dropped the first set against the Russian 46, and then found himself in desperate trouble in the second set when down 0-3. But the CWLander managed to find his touch as he clawed back into the set and eventually took it in a dominant tiebreaker. Mustard would claim six of the next seven games on the trot to secure an entertaining 46 76(2) 61 victory to set up a difficult quarterfinal.

Elsewhere, top seed Radivoj Daneu remains in ominous form and could reclaim the second spot on the world rankings after a double bagel win over qualifier Cameron van der Cleer. The Dutchman had no chance against the world number three who, if he wins the tournament, will again go ahead of current world number two Daniel Páez Blanco. The 60 60 victory continues Daneu's dominant run which has seen him drop just two games from 26 this tournament.

Seeds Out: None.

Was a no-go when I talked to him about it a month or so ago. I will try again later in the season when I've proved this has got some longevity.
Shame. I was going to do a Tales from the Changing Rooms type thread. I don't want it to get in the way of the main event though. I guess it'll just have to wait.

The match was not as close as I would like, but managed to qualify, which is a fantastic result for Korpinen, who may well be the worst player in CW?

Next time I meet Špidla I'll beat him for sure.

Disappointing about the forum, but it's to be expected when the majority that are created become inactive. Fond memories of Bugssy's..
