Or Rob Key. Not that I'm saying we're at that point yet.
Any time I've mentioned Robert Key as an England prospect I've been laughed at TBH, but I still think he could do a better job than Cook is at the moment, or for that matter Bell at 3.

Bell's only hope now is that Collingwood fails too so that the selectors fall for the occasional bizarre 'Well, we can't drop the all, so let's not drop anyone' logic.

As far as Im concerned, you pick your best players and ride out their blips (sometimes long blips)

The problem happens when poor players fail when they should never have been included.

If Cook is the right guy when in form then he is the right guy when out of form. IMO, cant chop and change on whims.
Well yes, and the last thing I want is a return to the 1980's approach of picking anyone who has a pulse and ditching them after a couple of games but if it was obvious who are best players are then the selectors would do exactly what you're advocating. Several England players of recent vintage have been allowed mighty long blips, and you couldn't say it's been a hugely successful policy.

And it's not the end of the world to drop a player - most of the great Aus batters in the late 1990's / early 2000's had a spell out of the side and came back better for it.

Always been impressed by R. Key, dont think he got a fair run in the England side in his last stint.

On Cook, Ive said before his technique is absolutely atrocious and that he wont be scoring too many test match test 100s as long as it is not sorted out. Whether he should be dropped or not is debatable, hes always been a long term solution more than anything else.

I think Collingwood's form since Edgbaston put paid to that particular theory, although it may have been a factor in the first half of last summer.

As much as I cant stand Bell, he does average over 40 in test cricket

Whether you guys like to admit it or not, there isnt a team in the world that can afford to discard a player of that quality ATM

Do you really think he'd be picked for India, Aus or SA?

The likes of Bell will just make merry way in the medorcrity of the standard of cricket and the no pressure situations he would find himself in.

What he does back for Warwickshire would mean squat considering his major malfunction is the ability to score when needed.

Bob Willis on Sky at the innings break saying that Daryl Harper should be sacked after his performance in this match. I'm inclined to agree, or at least never let him be the third umpire ever again..
he is sabotaging the referral system imo.

Michael Vaughan also averages over 40 in test cricket, he can bat 3...

Vaughan averages over 40 and has 18 tons an he is discarded

Bell has no place, though I dont particularly rate the alternaties.

On Bell - He probably will be dropped at some stage during this series, but unless Shah gets runs there, Bell will almost certainly be back for the home series against WI. Will Shah get runs? IMO, no, or at least not as many as to keep him in the team. He seems to have become a better player because he's not been playing, and although he definately deserves a chance (and probs did 12 months ago), he's unlikely to solve all of Englands middle order problems.

I'd quite happily take a pathetic Test defeat against this lot if it ends the England career of Ian Bell and Panesar goes to being an occasional horses for courses selection as he should be

Do you really think that it would contribute to either of these things though?

Vaughan is yesterday's man and has an extremely limited future

Bell might continue on a downward spiral but at least he is young

As I said, I cant stand him but in virtually any other country he'd be picked somewhere between 3 and 6

I've always backed Bell in the side because I thought that he had the potential in the long term to average 45 odd and be a mainstay in this England side. I do not see that with Shah, Vaughan or anyone else as they are all players who could plug the gap in the short term but are not good enough to be able to do that consistently for years. Unfortunately, Bell hasnt lived up the expectation and England need to move on to someone like Shah now to come in as a short term option to boost the side.

Personally, I hope England look at someone like Samit Patel as a long term option in the middle order this summer as his selection would clearly be one with an eye in the future.
