Cricket Team Draft - ODI edition

Julian87

State Captain
Picking Neil Johnson as an opening batsman and will make up part of the fifth bowler. Really wanted at least one player from that Zimbabwe side that showed so much potential and Johnson is a perfect fit. With 1679 runs @ 36.5 in 48 ODI's, he also took 35 wickets.

One Day team so far
1 Nick Knight (100 ODIs - 3637 runs @ 40.41 sr 71.52)
2 Neil Johnson (48 ODIs - 1679 runs @ 36.50 sr 70.2 & 35 wickets @ 34.85)
3 Mark Waugh (244 ODIs - 8500 runs @ 39.35 sr 76.9 & 85 wickets @ 34.56)
4 Nathan Astle (223 ODIs - 7090 runs @ 34.92 sr 72.64 & 99 wickets @ 38.47)
)
With Waugh and Astle at 3 and 4, the last thing you needed was an opening batsman. I know this is all hypothetical, but if Johnson were to open for this team ahead of Waugh, I'd expect Junior to rage quit.

Yeh I had Waugh opening originally and he was just as competent in the middle order and thats where I needed stability. I consider he and Knight my best two bats in this line up and I didnt like the idea of them opening together. Was always a fan of Johnson, very capable player, I realise he isnt a more capable opener than Waugh or Astle but he never batted anywhere else but opener except for one or two times.

I think its an interesting decision, potentially Nathan Astle might not bat until the 15th or 20th over, so that certainly goes against his natural instincts to play aggressively early on in an innings whilst the field is up. I don't think he batted lower than number three for the last ten years of his ODI career.

Hahaha i was shocked as well. I need a spinner so i thought i would look through a few. As expected Murali,Warne.Kumble etc. were all gone then i noticed yesterday afternoon that Vettori has somehow been missed by everyone. Was just hoping when my turn came around he would still be left

1. Sanath Jayasuriya
2.
3.Ricky Ponting
4.Inzamam Ul-Haq
5.Ramneresh Sarwan
6.Andy Flower (WK)
7.Adbul Razzaq
8.Daniel Vettori
9.Chaminda Vaas
10.
11.Makhaya Ntini

Bat down to 9 now :) Just an opener and fast bowler to go. I expect them to be pretty weak too, surely everyone hasn't skipped someone like Vettori in those positions.

Manoj Prabhakar for me. A steely batsman to hold things together and allow the rest to swing. Also a very useful bowling option.

Saurav Ganguly - (LHB 11,363 runs @ 41.02, RM 100 wickets @ 38.50)
Darren Lehmann - (LHB 3,078 runs @ 38.96, SLA 52 wickets @ 27.78)
Hansie Cronje - (RHB 5,565 runs @ 36.41, RM 114 wickets @ 34.78)
Carl Hooper (RHB 5,762 runs @ 35.34, ROS 193 wickets @ 36.05
Manoj Prabhakar - (LHB 1,858 runs @ 24.12, RM 157 wickets @ 28.87)
Sir Ian Botham (RHB 2,113 runs @ 23.21, RFM 145 wickets @ 28.54)
Tatenda Taibu (wk) (RHB 2,045 @ 26.21 ROS 2 wickets @30.50)
Waqar Younis (RHB 969 runs @ 10.30, RF 416 wickets @ 23.84)

Apparently not!

Oram, Attapatu, Brad Hogg > Vettori?!?!?!

You guys are sleeping!
I was actually sleeping when you posted this message... Edit - Nah I was wide awake at work :(

I mean it's very easy to add Oram and Starvin Marvan, but they are obviously different types of players than Vettori.

I don't need a spin bowler, I needed another pace bowler and more importantly a good striker of the ball. So instead of thinking that the order of the players selected needs to be the order of the best players, think about team balance/needs especially when Vettori averages over 32 with the ball and 15 with the bat, worse figures than Hogg who has played very well in important matches.
