Cricket Team Draft - ODI edition

Ross Taylor

An average of almost 40 with a strike rate of 83.74...I needed an aggressive batsman at the top of the order capable of taking the attack to the opposition (specially if I decide not to open with de Villiers), and Ross Taylor is perfect for doing that job at no. 3...I had 2 batting spots left and I wanted to choose an attacking batsman this time because I want to fill the other batting spot with a solid (I won't mind defensive) no. 5 (or opening) batsman and there are plenty of them available still...Really aggressive batsmen are in short supply, and I was in dilemma between Ross and another attacking batsman...But since that batsman was a no. 6 specialist, I decided to throw Shoaib Malik at no. 6 (who is equally capable of devastating slog)...So, now my batting line-up has 6 batsmen all of whom are capable of devastating strokeplay (who don't think the same way about Haynes need to revise their theory because it was Greenidge because of whom Haynes had to stay calm at the other end, and we have enough proof of what was consider devastating strokeplay in his time from Haynes at times)...So, now I can afford to pick a solid presence (besides Miandad and Haynes) who I don't mind if is a bit defensive...

Team so far:

AB de Villiers
Desmond Haynes
Ross Taylor
Javed Miandad
Shoaib Malik
Chris Cairns
Curtly Ambrose
Courtney Walsh
Muttiah Muralitharan

The bowling attack, too, will be threatening with lot of variety even if the other bowler (the one who is yet to be selected) is nothing more than decent...

Good looking team so far.
Yeah, but all I need is a wicket early at the top to check the scoring rate of that batting line-up; and with the opening bowlers that I have (Ambrose and Walsh), I fancy my chances...Also, a big weakness of ozone's team is its fast bowling line-up...Srinath is only decent (compared to some other teams) to open the bowling, and two more bowlers are yet to be selected who, I am afraid, are not going to be great bowlers...So, if a team has a great batting line-up they'll always fancy their chances of piling up a huge total against ozone's team, and if ozone's opening partnership fails, he will be in deep trouble...Having said all that, I must say that despite the weaknesses his team is very decent till now (his strengths are his opening batsmen, wicketkeeper and spin bowling option), and definitely one of the top 6 teams thus far...

Batting maybe a touch weak, but that bowling attack is sensational. :)

What happened to Misbah ul Haq, weldone?
I was really in dilemma between Misbah and Ross, but realizing that I have a good slog option in Shoaib Malik for no. 6 and that I needed a real attacking option at the top of the order (specially if AB doesn't open), I decided to go with Ross...I think I clarified that in my selection post itself...And if you're asking if I can change my player once selected, then the answer is yes I can as long as the next person doesn't select, NUFAN already did it twice...

Haha, whoa, no need to be so defensive.

I shall have 7 batsmen with de Villiers keeping, so that's a plus...And with quality like Miandad and Haynes and real attackers like AB, Ross, Malik and Cairns around, that line-up is anything but weak (even not a touch, no I won't give that to you :) )...My batting line-up is comparable to any other team (except NUFAN's)...And I have one more batsman to pick, so watch out...

In short, I would say, watch it as a combination, not as a collection of batsmen...Feel the variety inherent in that batting line-up...It is an ideal mix of solidity and aggression at the top, game-setting options in the middle overs (with one more to be selected besides Miandad), and devastating slog at the end...

And about your comment about my bowling line-up, I must say, you are sometimes correct dude :p

You'd have to question that team's mental toughness however, in terms of being able to take it when the hard questions are asked...

International 12th Man
Jason Gillespie

Need another seamer and he is the best available. 142 wickets at an average of 25.42 and an economy of 4.21 over the late 90s and early 00s is very good too.

Shane Watson
Greame Smith
Zaheer Abbas
Brian Lara
Kumar Sangakkara+

Farveez Maharoof
Abdul Qadir
Jason Gillespie
Joel Garner

Now I am looking for two late order slog specialists, with maybe one who can help out with the bowling a bit just to add another option.

There's a possibility that my order could still change slightly. Would possibly put in a attaking bowling all-rounder up the order and use him and Sachin as my fifth bowler. Also, Courtney Walsh wasn't a prolific one day bowler, and Srinath would certainly compare to him, IMO. I would say your main weakness is you're keeper. Asking de Villiers (not a regular keeper) to keep and to open the batting against, theoretically, some of the best ODI bowlers of all time is probably a big ask.

Unlike the Test draft, I don't think the batsmen here are going to face that many 'all time' class bowling attacks, unless they're playing the teams that specifically picked a lot of bowlers early on in the draft. The gap between the excellent real life bowling attacks and many of the bowling attacks assembled in this draft isn't all that great compared to the Test draft tbh.

Picking Neil Johnson as an opening batsman and will make up part of the fifth bowler. Really wanted at least one player from that Zimbabwe side that showed so much potential and Johnson is a perfect fit. With 1679 runs @ 36.5 in 48 ODI's, he also took 35 wickets.

Dammit. Gambhir was going to my pick this round.

Scott Styris for me. Useful bat and can share 5th bowler duties with Tugga.
