You cannot understate how important Kallis has been, and continues to be, to South Africa, and any other team he has represented. He appears to have re-found his love of bowling again, and boy does it show. The pace is up there working in tandem with appreciable swing. His catching also is outstanding.
The thing that always seems to be thrown at Kallis is his lack of intention to dominate a bowling attack when the situation dictates, either an inability to up the scoring rate, or a selfishness on his part to continuing batting for himself. These are so-called reasons he is not mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting, Pietersen etc, who all have the ability to dominate. I don't wholeheartedly agree with those points, was just giving the discussion an alternative angle.

Botham was wildly inconsistent most of the time.
Glad you put Miller up there though - that guy consistently gets left out of the "all-rounder" discussion.
Miller and Imran Khan are (for mine) the 2 great all-rounders in that they could bat middle order, and then open the bowling with a savage and fiery spell. Both of them should go down in history as 2 of the great bowlers - let alone their batting achievements.
Botham, Kallis, Sobers were all better suited to bowling first change.
But where Miller and Khan are 2 of the great bowlers, Sobers and Kallis are 2 of the great batsmen.
Botham wasn't a standout in either category - just fairly good at both --> (which makes him a great!)
But I'd rate Botham on the level of a Kapil Dev (that's not bad) - different sorts of players, same sort of greatness!

Similar reasons for me preferring not to have both Clarke & Ponting in the slips. They're 2 of our best ground fielders, or they are the best 2 imo whilst Symonds isn't in the team. Obviously Ponting is going to stay at 2nd, and rightly so because he's the best slipper in the team, but if Clarke isn't a clear cut 2nd best slipper I kinda hope he stays at Point/Cover.

Can we really trust Katich in the slips? His catching has been pretty poor since coming back into the test team.

Clarke's slipping first slip record isn't something to write home about though. It also takes your best outfielder out of play.

He's certainly kept wicket for NSW as a stop-gap before.
Even more reason to put the young guy in there imo.

Nah, amped for it, always been a fan of the idea. Really happy with the side, probably bowling light and I have no faith in Tait, but it looks really strong.
Dussey deserves his chance easily.

Don't disagree that Dussey deserved his chance, but like you, think the bowling looks a bit weak. Whatever you may think of Hauritz, afaic he's quite comfortably a better OD bowler than White/Dussey/Clarke.
