Warner shaddowing too? Would be a bit gutted if I was Hopes at the moment, I really thought this was going to be his big opportunity with opening.
Warner would not even make it to the squad if Clarke isn't ruled out, but even in case he does miss, i think Warner would sit on the fringes and White would come into the side atleast in the live rubbers, i think more than Hopes, Siddle would be the one who would be feeling gutted, he had some momentum going for himself after the MCG and SCG tests, but he would have to cool his heels on the sidelines now, ideally he would have wanted to retain his momentum going into the ODI games and doing well in them, and then carry that form and rhythm forward to the return leg of the test series in South Africa.

How often is he in form?
Gibbs is well past his best, he has had some disciplinary issues recently and has just come out of a alcohol rehab programme, so obviously mentally too his focus isn't as good as it should be, i am kind of surprised he is still being persisted with by the South African management, because clearly looking at some other young talent to fill in as the opener would have been the way to go.

From South Africa's perspective, they know that Australia's T20 is much, much better than theirs in every department. Therefore, it's worth the risk of picking a player who probably won't fire, but if he does will almost automatically win them the match.

Yeah, this.

Plus, he hasn't really been as dire lately in limited overs cricket as it seems. He's been terrible in Tests for a while but he's still played the odd gem in one day cricket even through his poor overall form, right up until his suspension.

Yeah, Gibbs has still averaged over 35 in his last 21 ODI's which isn't that bad considering his career average is 36. Got three tons in that period as well but his on his last legs with Hashim Amla not putting a foot wrong (yet). The real battle is to see who out of Kallis and Gibbs goes tit ass first.

Yeah but IIRC that's largely due to a run of good form this time last year followed by a run of poor form to date. Had a shocking IPL which may have had something to do with it.

Gutted for Parnell, two top overs and then it went all horribly wrong. :(
Good character building for the kid though, hopefully he responds better than the likes of Garnett Kruger did when they got tonked down under. Bowled at a fair lick as well.

Failed marriage, wife taking him for everything, being arrested, drink problem and being the wrong side of 34 may also be something to do with it. Gibbs made his first class debut way back in 1990 so his been on the block a long time.

Yeah, but he is there in the ODI team too, now its already clear that South Africa have resigned to the fact that they would get pulverised in the ODI series, so my point is why not use this opportunity to give a young bloke a chance against a good team like Australia, and see where exactly he stands, and as you said its not like they have anything to lose trying this out, i think South Africa' limited overs cricket is in the doldrums atm and they should look to build a good ODI team from here, in the exact same way they built their test side, and hence an inconsistent and troubled bloke like Gibbs shouldn't really be in their plans.

There's plenty of young players around the side though. He's only there because Smith is injured too, remember. Personally i don't mind having him around. He's not a passenger, he won't waste space the way players like Cook and Bell do for England. He'll score runs or he'll get out of the way for someone else to. And he's one of the all-time great fielders.

Blooding someone young isn't always a good idea. If there's noone up to it- and i presume the selectors don't think there is- then asking them to open the batting against Bracken and Tait would be counter-productive. They'd probably never want to play international cricket ever again.

Yeah that's true, i guess we can't tell which of those factors had an impact and to what extent they did.

Anyone else quite impressed with Wayne Parnell's performance, granted I did not manage to see his last two overs, but his first two were very promising indeed, gets a fair bit of swing, bowls at 140-145kph and seems to rush batsmen off the pitch.

Went to the game last night, and had an awesome time. First 10 overs of both teams innings was a bit meh, batsmen could hardly hit it off the square. Massive lol at the short memories of some people on here re: Hussey in limited overs games. Can pick the gaps, keep the scoreboard ticking over Bevanesque, but then has the ability to go big if required.

Awesome catch from JP, as was his dropped catch off White :p Hopefully now we can ****ing stop hearing about Warner. Looked terrible in the short time he was out there, did nothing but swing accross the line.

Was a great send-off for Haydos as well, got me plenty of pics (y).

I believe Aussies should use the ODI series the try to find out who the best spinner in the country is. If that means playing McGain, Krezja, Hauritz, Doherty, Casson etc. all in the same team, so be it.

Finding a good spinner is way more important than winning some stupid one day series everybody will forget in another month.

Warner will be in the both the Test and ODI teams for the next 15 years. Get used to it.

He gets stumped for 2 and this post doesn't mention Hussey at all.
