Elliott isn't a good enough bowler.
I think the issue is more the fact that Oram isn't good enough to be a fourth bowler anymore, more than Elliott/Ryder/Styris not being able to get through ten. If Oram and Styris were at their bowling peak it'd work great, but Oram with his injury woes and reduced pace is nothing more than a fifth bowler these days and Styris, ever since he decided to bowl off-cutters rather than nagging medium-fast stuff, has been a sixth bowler at very best.

It doesn't have to be Patel or Gillespie, but having five frontline bowlers > having a specialist batsman coming in at 8. If Patel and Gillespie are deemed not good enough then you simply have to look at other bowling options - stacking the batting won't compensate for this.

Summed it up quite well though Patel's place TBH is not really in jeopardy at all. Yet if they feel the pitch needs another seamer he gets left out. Oram I think is still a good enough bowler but his fitness means that 10 overs is too many, making him a good 5th option along with Ryder/Styris making up a full 10+ overs.

Disagree, he's our new annoying dibbly dobbly.

Actualy, seeing as Larsen, Harris, D Patel etc all had the names of dibbly, dobbly, wibbly and wobbly given to them in the 90s (can't remember who was who) what should Elliott be called? Jiggly?

Anyway, next game (assuming Oram isn't fit, his ambulance will probably have a crash or something)

McCullum
Guptill
Ryder
Taylor
Flynn
Broom
Elliott
Vettori
Mills
Southee
Patel/Thompson (**** off Gillespie)

Flynn better start scoringb efore Oram comes back. I would'nt put up with such a crap average after 15 odd games. Chattergoon has a better record FFS. Broom showed more in one innings than Flynn has ever done in his ODI career to date. I do feel he'd do better at three but unless Ryder breaks another toilet on the way to the pub or Guptill has a disaster I can't see him getting a shot, though actualy if McCullum moved down the order and Broom, Elliott and co. were bumped up maybe he'd have a chance.

Fact is, he scores a fifty at least before the return of Oram or he's a test specialist in my book until a gap opens up.

Sinclair can come home and lead us to the State titles. **** off NZ selectors, Skippy is ours!

Yeah, Broom should definitely play ahead of Flynn if the spot available is at 5 or 6. If Flynn has to play, McCullum (or maybe even Ryder?) needs to move down the order.

Switch Flynn for Ryder and boot Elliot when Oram comes back and thats my team.

I maintain that Elliot is a great back-up player a guy who can cover a real batsman and a real bowler in a very handy way. But he isn't up to standard in either department to keep a spot in the full strength team.

(Though this is NZ we never have a full strength team!)

Maybe I'm being biased. Maybe not. No idea ATM. Great innings in terms of capitalising on the luck he got. Just didn't look anything special. Probably a rush judgement though TBF.
I uderstand how you feel. If that had been a WI guy against nZ I would be exploding atm. However Guptill has been a classy List A player and once he got past 40 today looked really good. Obviously if he keeps offering chances he'll get screwed over but at this stage I'll be nice and put the chances down to nerves etc.

I wonder how many NZings will complain about WI given 6rpo to win when NZ was never at that stage.
Its called DWL and its a strangely working mess. Morale of the story: learn to catch.

Anyway :lamo: to you for being a dire, biased bond21-esque poster in this thread. Please, the only bond21 stlye poster allowed here is me in any thread involving Central Districts or HDS in anything O'Brilliant related.

And possibly involving Dicko and Dominic Cork.

Pretty awesome that Guptill was only the 5th ever batsman to get 100 on ODI debut. And his 122 is the second highest score among those 5. Not a bad effort.

Vettori getting a bit carried away though - "one of the best innings I've seen in a long time".

His placement was superb (but I didn't see his shaky start).

After his early worries guptill was sensational. He showed 3 factors which make a fantastic one day innings. Solid(ish) at the top, accumulating through the middle, hitting out at the end. The recent future now looks bleak for Jimmy How as unless Marty has a pretty big fall from grace he will take Hows test spot.

How to be fairly confident of knocking down the McIntosh's of the world TBH.

Ive had it with Mark Gillespie in ODI's. The guy has absolutely know idea where the ball goes after it leaves his hand. A little bit of pace is useless with no control. A poor mans Sean Tait.

Yeah surely O'Brien is a better option, just as quick and actually knows where he is putting the ball.

LOL tony cozier had to remind the NZ commentator he was dropped 3 times before he reached 30...lol. Especially by ramdin, easy catch. He wasn't impressive at all, he doesn't deserve the hundred he got.
