Based purely on NSW performances, the above ones were based on Test performances as Test players no longer play much FC cricket.

S Katich
A Morris
D Bradman
A Kippax
M Bevan
M Noble
K Miller
B Haddin
A Davidson
R Lindwall
W O'Reilly

Kippax, Katich and Bevan records are so mad for NSW. Lawson unlikey to miss out with the ball.

Maybe Barbados might give us a run.
Random, but if NSW somehow got Test status, would you support them over Sri Lanka?

Off the top of my head, so is probably a bit crap. Hirst and Verity might be better batsmen that I gave them credit for as well.

Boycott
Sutcliffe
Lehmann
Tendulkar
Inzamam Ul Haq
Michael Bevan
Rhodes
Bairstow
Trueman
Hirst
Verity
Great side, though Hirst would move up a couple of spots at least, and Len Hutton is now rolling in his grave.

Dead set phenomenal sides - agree that Barbados would be the nearest competition. The Barbadian first XI I reckon would be as good, but I couldn't see them being able to put out a second XI to hold a candle to that one. Then again, who could?

Ian Chappell is a novelty choice - played just once or twice didn't he?

Still you have given me an excuse to tell my Ian Chappell story:-

In the autumn of 1979 I was sat in a pub in Lytham St Annes with a couple of mates. During the course of the evening Chappelli came in with an entourage and sat at the table next to us. I have to say that beyond recognising him when he walked in we wouldn't have noticed him although he may well have picked up on the fact that his presence set myself and my mates off talking about the Packer circus and everything flowing from that which was big news at the time.

It must have been before the 1979/80 tour because I am sure we would have made some comments had the Ashes just been won 4-1 by England!

Anyway in due course I had the call of nature and went to the gents and in the middle of what I was doing Chappell walked in. He stood next to me and his first action was to let rip an impressively loud and rasping fart followed very rapidly by an equally loud and rasping belch. He then looked at me and said "the beer in this place is f****** p***”

I didn't really know what to say to that and my first thought was to be a bit concerned that perhaps I had said something in the bar that may have offended him so I kept quiet. He started to chuckle and looked at me again and said "did you realise I was Ian Chappell". My immediate reaction to that, and one which I must confess I had already prepared in the lounge thinking that he might say something like that when he was sat next to us, was "No I thought you were John Snow's bunny".

At this he roared with laughter but I still thought discretion was the better part of valour and left and went back to my table. When he came back into the bar shortly afterwards he made for the bar and bought a pint each for myself and my mates which he brought over in excellent humour and told us the pints were because I'd given him a line for his after-dinner speaking. Whether he ever used it I have no idea

I suppose I should have tried to get some piece of signed memorabilia from him but unfortunately being a young 'un I was just too overawed
 Fantastic story mate, well done.

You really reckon Warne was Hampshire's best ever captain? Loving the fact that you've kept the Warne-Pothas axis going. Opposing batsmen are going to cop some abuse.

EDIT: Now that i look at it, it's only between him and Malcolm Marshall for the captaincy. So fair enough.
Did MM skipper Hampshire at some stage?

I always thought Mike Garnham was a superior player to be fair.

Neil Foster, John Childs and Ken McEwan would be pretty good options (any to replace Ray East, surely!). McEwan to replace Cook.

Iain O'Brien in for Wellington

And Jeets.

Oh Crowe and Fleming would probably be in there too...

Michael Bevan

I personally wouldnt include overseas players but I understand that some have very strong links to the county in question and have played a major role there (eg Imran).

However, I do struggle to accept Bevan as a Sussex player when he played more FC games for Yorkshire and has played for 4 counties in total.

There wouldn't be many top 3s better to watch than that trio you have there. All worth the price of admission alone I'd reckon.

Off the top of my head. Hodge vs. Dean Jones is maybe debatable, and Bill Woodfull could also very easily be in. The bowlers are not right, I'm sure there's probably a couple of better alternatives than both Fleming and Reiffel, but I can't think right now. Maybe Max Walker?

Yes a completely fair point - and precisely the same goes for Javed Miandad as well. I initially omitted them but temptation got the better of me.

I will consider who should replace them.

OK so I've dropped Miandad and Bevan, and have included Snow. Quite a lot of bowling there - 5 front-line seamers and 2 spinners (if you include Grieg as both). I couldn't leave any of them out though.

Both Langridges and Ian Thomson are unlucky to miss out - as they so often were with regard to England selection.

Walker sprang to mind, as did Trumble, Bill Johnston, Ian Johnson and Ironmonger. Trumble and Johnston would be my first two picks there I reckon.

Midwinter

State Captain
For the Vics Trumble would be a certainty, Blackham would be the keeper, definitely Maxie Walker ahead of Fleming.
But can't think of an outright quick to open the bowling, I don't think Froggie Thomson was faster than Merv :)

But we're still leaving out The Big Ship, Harry Trott, Jack Ryder and the unbowlable Bill Woodfull.

I think Jack Ryder would have to be in , but who to leave out ?

Merv and Nugget to open the bowling, Maxie first change then Hughie and Warnie to clean up the middle order and make a mess of the tail !

Nice thread, thanks
