Australia's ODI squad

i'm just not sure where his selection has come from (i don't really think he is having *** with merv hughes daughter, if he has one, i know i wouldn't brave that) considering the fast bowlers around domestically at the moment, why is he so special ? australia seem to be doing the funny english thing lately of picking one day specialists, which they never really did a lot of previously

Most people are. 8-)

He got picked against Bangladesh, if fit [forgot he was injured] he must be in the selectors thoughts.
His selection against Bangladesh must be taken into context though - he was only picked because the proper backups were over in India on an 'A' tour. It's not like he has actually leapfrogged them. The fact that Moises Henriques was in the squad to play Bangladesh at one point reinforces this.

Who was in India at the time again? Siddle, Bollinger and Noffke?

Noffke injured, 2 lefties in Johnson and Bracken are favoured, I can't see the selectors picking 3 lefties in Bollinger.

Siddle is very inexperienced in one day cricket, so he's no certainty in the side.

Hilfenhaus is another guy being mentioned, however Geeves has out performed Hilf in the shorter format since the start of the 2007-2008 season.

yeah good point, henriques should be nowhere near the team at this point in his career, although having said that, neither should warne

If you can pick three right armers (as Australia have done, many times), you can pick three left armers.

Geeves would be behind Bracken, Lee, Tait, Johnson, Clark, Hauritz, Siddle, Bollinger, Hilfenhaus (rightly or wrongly), Noffke and maybe even Hopes on bowling alone. There's a couple of guys ahead of him who probably shouldn't be, but the fact is, they are. A few of them are out injured but it's still a bloody long list. The only logic that has him anywhere near the team has Moises Henriques almost as close to it.

I agree re: right handers, but in all seriousness the selectors are never going to pick 3 left arm quicks in an XI for Australia.

Tait is injured. Lee injured, Clark injured, Noffke injured.

Again I've got to say that I had forgotten Geeves was too. If he wasn't but the others remained injured, there is only Johnson, Bracken, Siddle, Bollinger, Hilfenhaus ahead of him according to your rankings.

It is very debatable that Siddle and Hilfenhaus are ranked above Geeves in limited overs cricket.

Have we ever had so many top class bowlers sidelined with injury?

Lee would be verging on an all time ODI side. Clark is yet to show anything in the ODI version of the game, though Tait has a lot of potential and Noffers would be a walk up start in any other country.

Combined with the retirement of McGrath and Hogg I've never seen Australia's attack looking so dire since the dark days of the 80s.

exactly, same reason they woulnd't pick 2 leggies, or later, mcgrath and clark in the same team.

wonder what magoffin has to do ? the guy must have some kind of highly contagious disgusting disease.

noffke must be cursing his luck, the guy should have played more by now, his window is nearly shut

International Coach
I think Geeves is being slightly under-rated here, i agree with what PEWS is saying that Geeves got a gig against the Bangers because most of the other decent replacements were in India, but gotta give credit to Geeves he was good against the Bangers and then after that he has backed that up with good performances in both Ranger cup and SS games, i think given the number of injuries to the other fast bowlers, his name would have been in the mix for the upcoming ODI and T20 games, but since he is injured he is now pretty much out of contention.

I think there is good chance that the Aussies would go in with Siddle,Johnson and Bracken as there three quicks, and Bollinger and Hilfenhaus could be the reserve fast bowlers, and who knows if either of Hilfenhaus or Bollinger outbowl Siddle in the SCG test then they might get the first shot ahead of Siddle in the ODI and T20 games.

lets be fair, mike hussey would take wickets against that pitiful team that just toured.

i would like to see hilfenhaus given first gig in the one dayers, i highly rate him, not sure about his old ball form though, i think bollinger trumps him there from what i've heard, having not seen bollinger live.

My side:

1 Marsh
2 Hayden (Depends whether he retires or not)/Katich
3 Ponting
4 Clarke
5 M Hussey
6 D Hussey
7 Haddin
8 Johnson
9 Hauritz
10 Bracken
11 Tait/Bollinger (Not sure on how badly injured Tait is)

12 North/Voges
13 Hopes (unfortunately...)
14 Hilfenhaus
15 Tait/Bollinger

The side is pretty much for change due to the current uncertainty over the future makeup...

International Debutant
I wouldn't be suprised in the slightest if Phil Hughes was picked, infact I expect him to be. Given all the publicity he's been getting lately and the "next big thing" aura about him, aswell as Hayden's struggles this summer. I know he does appear a better longer form player (certainly been more consistent there at this stage), however I think the temptation to introduce him to international cricket in the shorter form against tough opposition will be too great.

Marsh didn't really convince me earlier this year, he has plenty of nice shots but something about him just dosent have international player written on it, dosent seem to have a whole lot of patience about his game and he hasn't got the tightest of techniques. I know he'll probably retain his spot despite a poor summer for WA, but I'm not convinced he's gonna be there longterm.

Hope they resist the temptation to bring Katich back into the ODI setup.

Seen M Henriques mentioned a couple of times in this thread, I know he won't be picked but how's he been looking for NSW this year? haven't been able to watch a whole lot of him live, how far away from higher honours is he?

squad I reckon they'll pick-

1.S Marsh
2.P Hughes
3.R Ponting
4.M Clarke
5.D Hussey
6.M Hussey
7.B Haddin
8.J Hopes
9.M Johnson
10.N Hauritz
11.N Bracken

12.One of Siddle/Tait/Hilfenhaus/Geeves/Bollinger/Noffke
13.Another of above bowlers
14.A batsman who is versatile or can bowl a little, probably Cameron White or Marcus North, hopefully not Simon Katich or someone like Callum Ferguson:ph34r:

You would continue with Hayden? Interesting choice. Surely Hughes, Katich or Hopes deserve a knock ahead because of Haydens poor run.
Hauritz is also questionable. I would think we're better off going with another specialist pace bowler (Bollinger, Hilfenhaus) or even an all-rounder. We can always use Clarke and Katich for some part-time spin until we get a better spinner with a proven track record.

hayden could still be a force in the one dayers, although it's been a while since he's actually played an ODI, there's no reason why he couldn't do well there, one day and test form seem to be fairly exclusive these days, although i guess it depends what they want to do with him and the team, rest him, drop him, send him back to queensland until the SA tour, or build for the future with some young blokes.

don't know how kat would go bowling in a one dayer, the aussies seem to be going with part timers more often in the one dayers recently, although there's no symonds either.

shaun marsh is an odd one, they seem hell bent on making him an opener, i think he's a middle order bat, but does well in t20 and odi's at the top, hasn't done a hell of a lot at the top for wa in the shield this year

That's a fair point. But to me, I think Hayden is getting down on confidence. Nothing is going his way at the moment. Unless he performs well in Sydney (big century at least), I don't see it working for him. Granted both forms of the game are different, if you're failing miserably in one it is going to affect the other. In the end, batters have to make runs, and he is just not doing that at the moment. I would really like to see Hughes put in there to see how he performs on the international level.

but by the same token he wouldn't be the first to make runs in a one dayer then take that confidence into the longer form, i also fully expect him to make runs in the next test, although i've been saying that for a few tests now

Not even close. I'm surprised he's still actually playing for NSW, suppose they don't have many other options (apart from John Moss ;))

he's been earmarked by the selectors, he'll be given every chance, like the next young legspinner that comes out of underage competition, or the next blonde anyone from NSW

Henriques looks out of his depth most of the time but seems to come up with a promising performance every now and then. Obviously a talented player but he's nowhere near good enough to play for Australia yet. At least he's not injured constantly any more.
