If you were a member of the Australian cricket team selection pannel what methods would you employ to fix their current crisis ?

I don't think they can solve it at the moment.
Next time legends need to be shown the door steve waughy style and be replaced with good adequate in form replacements.
For example if Warne was replaced with a healthy in form Macgill the chances are he would still be playing. Same with Mcgrath being replaced with an in form Noffke or Hilfenhaus instead of Siddle who had a good season last year but this one had hardly kicked off.

There are two bleedingly obvious ones:

1. New selectors who pick players mainly on the basis of domestic performances rather than by random. And also one to install a relative permanent spinner instead of giving each 2 games to prove themselves.

2. Fresh captaincy to maximise the use of players.

Obviously these two aren't gonna happen so the decline will be greater and greater over the coming years.

Maybe India or South Africa could lend a few FC cricketers to Australia [/John Buchanan]

Clarke is possibly my least favourite player in the Australian side. Here's to hoping Ponting retires from batting and captaincy at the age of 48.

If Mitchell Johnson debuted now, and performed as he did in his first few Tests (with Lee and Clark not performing) he's probably be dropped too.

We have to persevere.

Was there maybe a case for easing a few of the old heads out earlier and staggering it a bit, so Oz didn't have the same problem they had back when Lillee, Marsh & Chappel all gave it away at the same time?

I know when the greats are still willing the temptation is to keep using them & it'd be a brave selector to do it, but it's a no-brainer that Langer, Warne & McGrath going all of a once with Martyn and Gilly either side of them is leaving some big old shoes to fill.

They've hardly struggled with Langer's departure - they've managed to be able to drop someone with zero justification thanks to having 3 openers. Gilchrist hasn't been a problem either as Haddin has finally gotten the hang of things. Martyn obviously hasn't been a remote problem as Symonds has averaged something like mid-60s (even though most of that's down to luck) since his departure.

Warne and McGrath meanwhile, the idea that you could make their replacements better by staggering departures is, well, logic-baffling TSTL. You're going to struggle to replace bowlers of those calibre, full-stop. There is NOTHING AT ALL that you can do in terms of organisation and preparation to create bowlers of the calibre - you're just lucky when those with that skill are around and should treasure them when they are, and realise that when they're not any more you're going to do less well than you did when they were around.
