It makes complete sense. I've had plenty of injuries that I was fine to bat with but couldn't bowl. Batting is infinitely easier on the body than bowling.
If it was a back injury I would agree. I've had lots of back problems where i've been ok to bat, but couldnt bowl at all. And I am well aware batting is easier on the body than bowling, that's a bit of a no brainer.

I just can't see the difference between sprinting a quick single and running into bowl when it comes to a calf strain, in fact, i'd probably say sprinting a quick single would be harder on the calf than bowling.

My team for the second test:

How
MacIntosh
Flynn
Taylor/Fulton
Ryder
McCullum
Franklin
Vettori
Mills
Patel/Southee
O'Brien

Gillespie should never play another test for NZ again.
I agree with that side...though if Taylor can't play (i'm sure he will) i'd rather have Broom than Fulton.

If Oram can't bowl then he shouldn't be picked.
I'd say the same of Franklin though.

Personally I think Oram (or indeed Fulton) would offer more to the side as a specialist batsman than Franklin would offer in his current role of batting #7 and bowling slow, wide half-vollies at third change. I'm a big fan of Franklin the bowler but he's not back into proper rhythm with the ball yet so he shouldn't be in the team.

Wow, whats up with all this Drop Oram Talk? Hes been one of our most solid players this year

8 Tests- 405@ 33.75.

Excluding Bangaladesh

5 Tests- 279@ 31.00

I don' think he should be dropped. but then again, I'm a huge fan of Oram, so I'm bias

Oram is not a top five batsman. If he were included as a batsman only it would have to be at six, and that would involve dropping a bowler.

Jimmy is actualy scoring more domestc runs than Oram and Fulton. He's also bowling well on flat domestic wickets. If Oram can't bowl I have no problem with Jimmy staying in the team.

If Oram is fully fit then next test I'd have:

How
McIntosh
Flynn
Taylor
Ryder
Oram
McCullum
Vettori
Franklin/Southee/Martin
Mills
O'Brien

If not able to bowl:

McIntosh
How
Flynn
Taylor
Ryder
McCullum
Franklin
Vettori
Mills
Southee/Martin
O'Brien

Yeah, over a period of four games or so. Franklin can certainly bat and I like him as an overall cricketer much more than I do Oram, but there's little doubt in my mind that Fulton and Oram are both much better batsmen.

It'd be much better for him to continue to work up his bowling rhythm in domestic cricket and come into the team when his bowling demands it.

He's also bowling well on flat domestic wickets.
His figures have been okay this season, but not really what you'd expect from a bowler of his class, even given the unusually flat early season wickets. He hasn't even been opening the bowling all the time which tells us something IMO, and if his bowling in the first Test against the West Indies was anything to go by, he's not ready yet.

It's clearly true that Franklin is at least 5-10 k's down on his usual pace, but it's also true that there was absolutely no swing at Dunedin, and unless the ball is moving through the air Franklin has always been very hittable. I'd keep him in the side.

He said on Cricket Company that he's not 100%, and that blow to the ribs wouldn't have helped. He's been bowling for decent enough spells so he can't be far away from full fitness.

Cricinfo reporting that Franklin may not be able to play due to the play in the Ribs and Taylor with his finger. They are both reporteed to be not too bad.

Fults and Martin flown in as replacements

I hope we bat first on a Napier belter and see a few tons, maybe this time for big jess and his mate danny, Maybe Jimmy How can find some form.

I think rain is going to influence again, sadly.

I think Oram has more potential to stay out there and bat with the tail and score a decent score. At his batting position quite often is left during a panicking top order collapse and he is the one that is likely to be most consistent with the bat and IMO I think he has more potential to stay out there and grind than any other brought in. I think he has been unfairly treated on here, sure he hasn't scored many large scores but he has dug us out and carried us over the line quite a bit before. Even saying that it would sound better if a specialist batsman did come in but if you chuck Fulton (I am a fan of his) in there instead I still think Oram would have done better. Just defending Oram I probably would be tempted to chuck him in if I was a selector for the match although it is not likely.

Oram is definitely out of second test - or so i hear, could be wrong
true just saw that. Didn't notice before. So what if Taylor and Franklin are also out?:

Mcintosh
How
Flynn
Fulton
Ryder
McCullum
Vettori
Mills
Gillespie/Patel
O'Brien
Martin

thats going on the people they have called up. Quite worrying really.

Franklin won't be out. He was pretty much fully fit at yesterday's training session. No word on where Taylor is at yet. And why do you think that rain will be a big issue? The forecast is quite good.
