As for Dhoni, he is a glorified tailender - the guy is not capable of batting any higher than 7 and there's more than enough evidence to support that

Who said Dhoni is a specialist batsman ffs? And Gilly, Sanga and Andy Flower are good enough to not be ashamed of being the 4th best. Dhoni has played some match-saving (ultimately matchwinning) knocks when the chips were down, recently in Nagpur and in Chennai.

Just because he cannot bat above 5 doesnt mean he is a tailender. It denotes the quality of the Indian top order, just like Adam was never able to bat above 7 for most of his career because the other 6 were better than him.

You don't get it. The comparison was to say how good the Indian top order and Australian top order were, that Dhoni and Gilly couldnt bat up. No comparison of their batting skills.

It depends on who's in the top 6, doesn't it. He doesn't have the technique - we all know that. But he's been very successful in ODIs, and there's no reason he shouldn't be able to grind it out like Collingwood or someone similiar. I think he's definitely capable of big 100s, and if that's the qualification by which great playing is judged, then we're not far from seeing him produce that.

I think he's a far better batsman than Flintoff, and Flintoff separates the tail from the real batsmen. I wouldn't be surprised if Dhoni ended up with an average of 42-43 at the end of his test career.

I think it'll actually keep improving with time. Provided he stays captain in the long term, I can see him play purely as a batsman in the distant future, like Sangakkara does now. Its going to be a real strain holding three jobs at once.

Mid 30s is excellent for a solid keeper, just making the point that I don't think he'll quite be a Gilchrist at test level
