International date again. And despite the moans of our British friends, there are actually some meaningful games in this week's fixtures.

Asia

15.00, grp 1, Manama: Bahrain 0-1 Australia (great activity from our Aussie brethren in the middle of their soccer season. A win in dramatic fashion, too, with Marco Bresciano scoring well into injury time after Bahrain had flundered a number of chances.)
15.15, grp 2, Dubai: UAE 1-1 Iran (a result neither team can be especially satisfied with, though Iran will probably be most relieved, having secured a point nine minutes from time against the run of play.)
16.30, grp 1, Doha: Qatar 0-3 Japan (Qatar's hope of being the No. 2 footballing nation on the peninsula took a big blow as they were outplayed by a Japanese side who finally clicked. Much will have to go wrong for Australia and Japan for them not to take the first two spots)
16.35, grp 2, Riyadh: Saudi Arabia 0-2 South Korea (a disappointing result sees Saudi Arabia, often a laughing stock in international finals - 0-8 against Germany anyone - out of the qualifying spots, which would be the first time since 1990. They now travel to Kim Jong-Il's Decidedly Undemocratic And Most Certainly Not Anyone But Kim's Republic of Korea, in a match to keep abreast of the leaders. The Considerably More Democratic But Still Deploringly Corrupt Republic of Korea, meanwhile, seem to have the strongest side in Asia proper.)

19.30, grp 3, Paramaribo: Suriname 1-1 Haiti (*yawn*)
01.00, grp 2, San Pedro Sula: Honduras 1-0 Mexico (horrific stuff from Mexico. Two men sent off and an own goal. Eriksson to wave goodbye to his job within days.)
01.00, grp 2, Kingston: Jamaica 3-0 Canada (Jamaica, with Tranmæl's Ian Goodison and Vålerenga's Luton Shelton, did their part of the job with a convincing win - but, in the end, they would have needed 6-0. Even Canada aren't that weak. Jamaica will probably take a harsh revenge at the Caribbean Cup.)
01.11, grp 1, Commerce City, Colorado: United States 2-0 Guatemala (goals from Kenny Cooper and most hyped wunderkind ever Freddy Adu secured the win.)
01.11, grp 1, Port of Spain: Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 Cuba (Kenwyne Jones finally broke through in the 67th minute, though by that time Guatemala were already trailing, so the win wasn't quite needed.
01.30, grp 3, San Salvador: El Salvador 1-3 Costa Rica (Costa Rica turned around 0-1 to go through undefeated.)

Code:
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3

Europe

19.30, grp 3, Serravalle: San Marino 0-3 Czech Republic (Czechs back to second, as expected, but are still the weakest second placed side.)

06.00 UTC, Lautoka: New Zealand 0-2 Fiji (Fiji's players got visas this time, defeating an all home-based - though with six Wellington Phoenix players - New Zealand XI. Shane Smeltz, formerly of cult clubs Mansfield and AFC Wombles, was rested. Waitakere striker Roy Krishna - a Fiji Indian - netted both goals. Still, the result was meaningless in terms of the table.)

Another away triumph this morning for the under-strength 2012 FIFA World Cup Champions side vs the indomitable Bahrainians.

Meanwhile, England struggling vs the mediocrity of Germany.

Honestly wasn't expecting a win out of the Bahrain trip, mainly due to the fact that half the team only arrived 2/3 days before the game. I'll still take the 3 points though!

It was ****ing 4am you douche. I watched it, but I didn't feel the need to rush in to the computer and post just for your approval. **** me dead.

Uruguay can be happy with a draw, those countries at high altitude are never easy to play in, would not be a horrible result. Hak, I can guess there a lot of calls to give Dunga the arse?
Tbh they need to get used to playing at altitude for the World Cup... Think there are 4-5 stadiums in or around the Highveld

The Veld is about 1300-1500 meters, no? Bolivia & Ecuador regularly play their matches at 3000 metres. Slight difference.
Jo'burg is about 1600m, Pretoria 1400m, Bloemfontein 1300m, Rustenburg 1350m, Nelspruit 650m.. Wow, never knew the South American grounds were that high, must be draining.. I always use altitude as an excuse when I get panned all around the interior, but you could really use it as a copout in a place like Bolivia I guess..

Australia might well win the WC if they play it in between everyone else playing them :p

After three months off, qualifying enters the final stages.

Asia

06.00, Pyongyang, grp 1: North Korea vs Saudi Arabia (it's the first time Saudi Arabia visit the Democratic People's Republic, though they have met six times on other grounds, with North Korea never winning. They're ahead in the group on goal difference, but neither side can really be happy with a draw as it implies Iran and Korea will run away.)
10.20, Yokohama, grp 1: Japan vs Australia (if Australia win, that's pretty much it; three more points from the three home games will secure things. It will be a momentous achievement, their first win in Japan ever, though some would feel the need to point out that the Japanese league have been in off-season since December, while ignoring that most of the Australian players are thoroughly jetlagged and tired after playing matches in Europe three days ago.)
11.00, Tashkent, grp 1: Uzbekistan vs Bahrain (a last chance for these two sides, with Uzbekistan very keen on finally winning after the debacle of the play-off four years ago - Uzbekistan won 1-0, but protested due to an incorrect decision, the match was replayed and Uzbekistan only managed a one-all draw. Bahrain have never beaten Uzbekistan.)
11.30, Tehran, grp 2: Iran vs South Korea (after hobbling through the group with early draws, Iran have found storming form since June, winning the final three matches of the preliminary stage as well as the West Asian Championship and taking a point in Jeddah. There was, however, a worrying blip in Thailand two weeks ago, though the presence of European sides will help Iran gain revenge for the penalty shoot-out loss at the Asian Cup.)

Europe

17.30, grp 1, Ta'Qali: Malta vs Albania (Albania have recorded some good results recently, drawing with Portugal and Sweden, though if they're going to qualify they'll need to win games, too. Malta away provides a decent opportunity; as both teams are European minnows, they've met often in friendlies, and it took three attempts before Albania managed a win - in February 2000. Since then they have not lost.)
18.45, grp 8, Dublin: Republic of Ireland vs Georgia (Hector Cúper, the former Inter manager who took over five days before the war, has taken over a side that has never beaten the Irish Republic in three attempts; it will be tricky to win the return leg, with the first fixture being moved to Mainz due to the war.)
19.30, grp 3, Serravalle: San Marino vs Northern Ireland (meh. Even Uppercut would agree with this assessment.)

All matches played the following evening.

01.00, San Salvador: El Salvador vs Trinidad and Tobago (El Salvador beat T&T at the highly disappointing Gold Cup campaign in June 2007, but since then the islands have won two and drawn one of the last three friendlies. Nevertheless, they have never won in El Salvador - though they had a bizarre exit from the Central American Cup only eleven days ago, the match being called off after two red cards and three injuries with half an hour to spare.)
01.14, Columbus, OH: United States vs Mexico (the US have put the match in the North of the country, perhaps to avoid a huge influx of Mexico supporters - the country plays most of their friendlies in the US as they can earn more from tickets - but will still have to compete for media attention with the buzz created around a baseball whacker's admission to steroid use. Mexico's coach, the vaguely famous S. G. Eriksson, has failed to fan flames caused by the near-miss in earlier qualification rounds, and are attempting their first win in the US for nearly ten years.)
02.30, San José: Costa Rica vs Honduras (Both sides registered surprise defeats to Panama in the latter stages of the Caribbean Nations Cup in Tegucigalpa, Honduras; 20,000 watched Honduras go down 0-1 in the semi-final, while only 900 assembled to watch Panama, who fell to El Salvador in preliminary qualifying, win the penalty shoot-out in the final. Honduras also knocked Costa Rica out of the 2005 Gold Cup, and won 5-2 in Costa Rica in the 2006 World Cup qualifying - yet it was Costa Rica who qualified then.)

Code:
Costa Rica 0-0 0
El Salvador 0-0 0
Honduras 0-0 0

Mexico 0-0 0

Asia

06.00, Pyongyang, grp 2: North Korea 1-0 Saudi Arabia (30-year-old Mun In-guk, like most North Koreans locked in his own country, netted a late goal to advance to second spot in a close group.)
10.20, Yokohama, grp 1: Japan 0-0 Australia (*yawn*. Both teams happy. Next.)
11.00, Tashkent, grp 1: Uzbekistan 0-1 Bahrain (Uzbeks looked the better side for the bits I watched, but without Kyiv striker Shatskikh, who only came on in the second half, they struggled. Bahrain netted the winning goal in the 94th minute, advancing to a play-off spot)
11.30, Tehran, grp 2: Iran 1-1 South Korea (Iran failed to hold on to their lead, with a Man Utd shirt-seller masquerading as an international class footballer by equalling ten minutes from time. With two away matches in Korea in June, time is starting to run out for Iran, and though they have time to adjust to the time zones they will have to travel back to Tehran for a home match with UAE in between.)

Code:
Group 1 Group 2

Europe

17.30, grp 1, Ta'Qali: Malta 0-0 Albania (A disappointing result for Albania, who are back out of contention. Only three teams realistically chase now, with Hungary as the dark horse. Indeed, Malta produced a fair few chances and could have taken the win near the end.)
18.45, grp 8, Dublin: Republic of Ireland 2-1 Georgia (A brace from Robbie Keane saved southern Irish blushes, as the Republic goes up into joint first with Italy. They have a seven-point gap now, but it should be noted that their next three matches are against Bulgaria, Italy, and Bulgaria again - a sequence that could see zero points and elimination.)
19.30, grp 3, Serravalle: San Marino 0-3 Northern Ireland (Steven Davis will miss the next match.)

01.00, San Salvador: El Salvador 2-2 Trinidad and Tobago (Stern John was an uncharacteristic scapegoat, missing the penalty which should have buried El Salvador under the weight of a 0-3-defeat; instead, football pundits were for once proven right as the dangerous 2-0-lead was turned about. Diminutive free kick specialist Osael Romero from the inland city of Usulután sealed the draw with a late goal.)
01.14, Columbus, OH: United States 2-0 Mexico (a packed stadium - a massive 23,000 can watch football in Columbus - saw the US take a fully deserved victory thanks to talented 'Gladbach striker Michael Bradley netting twice and the Mexican side appearing as rabble. Rafael Marquez, Barcelona centre back, got sent off, the fourth red card in 89 caps for the country.)
02.30, San José: Costa Rica 2-0 Honduras (Andy Furtado - who earns his keep playing for Marathón in Honduras, in front of crowds which would be considered dismal in the NSW state league - scored twice in the second half, as Costa Rica seem to be heading for their third straight Cup.)

Code:
Costa Rica 2-0 3

The fact that we've not conceded a goal shows just how awesome Schwarzer is. Reckon he's fairly comfortably the most valuable player on the team atm.
