Bell and Collingwood have to go.

Despite playing about 230 games between them, neither has a convincing statistical case for inclusion when there's 2 talented young batsmen being wasted down the order.

Aren't there other keepers? who else is out there?
Erm, none that are convincing. Foster would probably be OK further down the order, but then we have the problem of who should open the batting in these games. The English cupboard is embarassingly bare.

With Englands lack of (quality) openers, I think either Bopara or Patel will have to go. Who knows what might happen in the next game? Shah needed the runner this innings so he might not play. I recall Bopara batting at 3 in the last England series (may of been Collingwood's last game as captain as KP has been a strong advocate of Shah at 3; and he batted there the next game), so if Shah is injured, England could bring in another bowler or Wright.
Bopara's best shout might be opening with Essex and trying to make his case for inclusion there.

Didn't Davis have a decent season opening in the Pro40?

Looking at the England card, it doesn't matter where you bat for your county.

Prior - not 100% sure, but he probably started off as a no. 7 considering he is a keeper
Bell - quite sure he was a consistent 3/4 for Warks, opening now
Patel - played at 4/5 for Notts, playing at 7 for England
Bopara - scored a double in List A last season, averaged above 65 and finds himself at 8

Bell's scored more runs than any English batsmen in ODIs - including Pietersen - since the World Cup. He definitely has his problems which have been well documented but no-one else in the squad is capable of opening the batting anyway.

Collingwood's clearly out of form but he's played enough quality ODI innings to cement his spot. England tried things like Bopara batting 3 etc before and it just didn't come off - the team they're fielding now just absolutely trounced South Africa at home and whilst I don't really rate them and they've been poor here, changing the team fundamentally now would be overly reactionary, especially given the batsmen were on an absolute hiding to nothing in the first ODI. They deserve the next couple of games at least even though I don't think the have the right players up there as such.

If there's anyone whose spot could be called into question, it's Shah, but he scored a half century in this game so no-one's mentioning him. It doesn't absolve him of failures gone by though, really.

England seriously need to have a rethink on their opening combo. The current one + Shah are playing into India's mouth convincingly by going at a RR of 4. India's weakest link is their seamers. Not that they are all very bad, but they certainly don't deserve the respect the English top order is giving them. Munaf was treated as if he is McGrath Mk2, and Zaheer was let off several times he pitched on leg stump.

Plus, Yuvi's introduction ahead of any other spinner, in hindsight was a masterstroke. English batsmen were simply overawed by the tactic, and unnecessarily clogged up their batting against such a mediocre spinner. 10-28-4 beggars belief. England seriously need a rethink on their strategy against the spinners.

BCCI wants Test dates changed for Champions League

The ECB is considering a request from the BCCI to push back the first Test between England and India by a day to allow breathing space for both teams between the two-match series that starts on December 11 and the Champions Twenty20 League that ends the previous night.

Seems to be reasonable. Would give extra day for players to catch their breath.

Not Terrible
Here's Pietersen: "We had a chance at 29 for 3. We lost ourselves to Yuvraj. He was fantastic. We improved from the last game. Let's hope we improve more. We need to carry on our good start with the ball. One of the top five should have gone on to a big score. I don't think we missed a specialist spinner. Samit bowled ok. I bowled five overs of rubbish."

KP 5 overs for 20 and 1 wicket.
Patel 5 overs for 37 and 0 wickets.
