***Official Australia in India***

I would be doing the same thing if I were Dhoni. The fault is with the administrators though. Aside from Ponting, no one gives or should give a crap about the penalty.

Haha wow, 21.3 overs bowled, very, very strange morning. Seemed like a T20 at the start, then sending out a cripple with a runner ahead of Hussey of all people, then an 8 minute drinks break. Seems like both teams have just stopped caring since Tea yesterday.

Ridiculous fielding by India. It at all australia come closer to the target or even win the match, it might be due to the sloppiness of indian fielding, dropped catches and poor bowling from Zaheer khan in this innings.

Pure hypothetical here, but lets say Australia bat amazingly from here, Hussey and Hayden make big tons, and the day ends with Australia at 5/350 or something.

Let's also say that India end up a handful of overs down on the over rate, say 5-10, theoretically depriving Australia of a chance at winning the match.

What's a reasonable response under those circumstances given what happened yesterday? Should Dhoni try and push the over rate up? And if he seems to be trying to keep things pretty slow, taking his time between overs, bowling seamers etc, should be be punished for going against the spirit of the game?
I mean if Chris Broad can make Ponting bowl part-timers in winning situation to cover-up for the slow over-rates, then i can't see a reason why he can't warn Dhoni and tell him to make up for his team' slow over-rate after lunch.

Haha, what's he going to do? Ban him for England? There'll be an appeal and considering the first time issue, he'll get it reduced to a fine. And even if he doesn't, I don't think he ought to give a crap. Just tell Broad 'Thanks, I'll do better' and then bowl at 9 overs/per hour in the next session, just to spite him. :D

You'd probably find that as this is potentially Dhoni's first offence, he is facing a miniscule fine at the worst.

Should that be the case, there is zero incentive to bowl any more overs than he has to

Anyway, for all the talk about Ponting's negative captaincy, Dhoni is every bit as bad. Everytime an Australian looks like getting set, he simply spreads the field to all quarters and instructs the bowlers to bowl wide of the stumps

Well, there is defensive and negative. It was negative to bowl part timers, it's defensive to do what Dhoni did. It worked yesterday and he took 8 wickets for 166 in the end, don't see how he can be blamed.

But yes, they have both been defensive this game.

Would be nice to see Hayden hit some form before NZ series with a big ton. Watto in the runs would be awesome as well.

Johnson for a 50 here, should be promoted /broken record.

Don't know why but love my Queensland players. This uni keyboard has a disgusting amount of dandruff on it ftr.

Yeah, not surprised at Dhoni's tactics though. He want the Aussie batsmen to grin their way to a win here. He won't gift them boundaries and rightly so.

Yeah this shows how much crap aussies have been bowling!! Even with the defensive fields they never ever get the RR below 3.5 throughout the series!! Pacy pie throwers the lot of 'em.

Hypothetical:

Match referee walks into a dressing room and says "Tone the language/ banter/ sledging down fellas. It's not good for the game".

Captain says "Thanks, we'll do better" then goes out and sledges worse, just to spite the referee.

It's his 1st offence, he only cops a fine on appeal.

We can't have it that way. You have laws, rules, playing conditions and you have to abide by them.

There's no fault here on Dhoni's part in doing what he's doing, as the playing conditions and penalties involved allow him to do it. The problem lies with the set up of the rules etc.

Having said that, from a purely tactical POV, if he bowls Sharma and Zaheer into the ground between lunch and tea and Australia are still in a decent enough position at that time (unlikely), his options will be a bit ragged in the last session.
