***Official*** New Zealand in Bangladesh

Thing about Vettori's batting though is if it's ain't broke, don't fix it. He averages 41 batting at 8. He gets enough responsibility with the bat as is thanks to the top order, but I think if he were to be put up the order to become a 'proper' middle order batsman he wouldn't be successful.

Current test excluded of course...

What I am pleased with is the graft the side has displayed. It is only Bangladesh, but its been a while since New Zealand last managed to bat 4+ sessions.
Yeah. You often get the feeling when NZ bats they try and play it like a one day innings and get about 300 as quick as possible, and we seem to get dismissed a lot around the 50 over mark in tests.
If we were to bat more like we have in this second innings we'd go a long way to winning more games IMO.

I still can't put into words my opinion of the McCullum LBW.

Fantastic stuff from Vettori though. Flynn has supported him well, and he's played some fantastic shots himself.

Well...drawing more games anyway.

Yeah, that'd be more accurate. We also need to work on consistency in batting. The test against Australia a few years back where we racked up over 400 in the first and then got dismissed for 79 (IIRC) in the second is sort of a typical example of how we fare in tests.

Bit impossible for Dan to get triple figures. Wonder if Flynn can snag the 50.

Has been a much, much, much better and professional batting effort the second time around, even if most of it was done by our usual number 8.

They could at least lift Vettori up a couple places. A couple years ago I was even thinking he could open if they really were desperate because of his consecutive list A hundreds and proven ability with the bat at Test level. A number 8 with an average of 28 which rivals a lot of pure NZ batsmen should be higher in the order.

Vettori averages 41 in the number 8 position, and just 16 in the spots above that. Leaving him there at 8 is fine IMO.
If we were to promote him, would we play another bowler? Otherwise that'd mean putting someone like Oram at 8 and Flynn at 7. Wouldn't work IMO.

Dire. I've been sticking pins into Vettori's voodoo doll all innings to try and get Bangladesh home, then when I finally resign myself to New Zealand winning and hope Vettori gets to see them home, he gets out. So dire.

I hope Flynn gets his 50. He's really deserved it.
Agreed, has batted maturely and done what he should've done first time around. Seems to be fairly good at gritty innings, so hopefully we can see more of that from him. Has sealed himself a spot for the second test, anyway.

Vettori gone.
A shame but it was a helluva innings.

Yeah, sounds like a very poor dismissal but dug us out of a massive hole along with Redmond. Near superhuman effort in this test.

I'd consider moving Vettori up the order once Franklin was fit to bowl. Otherwise I agree - he should stay where he is. His batting definitely needs to be respected a bit more than it is though: he may bat #8 but he's New Zealand's best batsman IMO.

AWTA. There is plenty of time and with Oram there you, never know. But gee how confident would Bangladesh be if they can get another quick wicket?
They'd have to dismiss both of the current players to get a chance of winning. Can see both of these guys shepherding to the total if one of them goes.

Only statistically. Actual ability/skill/talent wise I don't think he's as good as any of the specialists in the team. The difference is experience and mentality IMO.

Who would get dropped, though? Mills and O'Brien don't really deserve to be dropped on recent form, while Patel is keeping Martin's spot warm really for when they get to seaming surfaces.
Add to that Southee may leap frog one of O'Brien and Mills, you'd have to then drop a batsman, and I don't think dropping batsmen is what we need to do when that's our biggest problem.

A re-structuring of the order would be better. McCullum at five as I said earlier is pretty dodgy.

Mind you, could put Macca at 8 and promote Dan to 7
