on Rohit, i don't think anyone could go wrong by having him in the side .... and Badri is a good choice too

haha, no way Jaffar should have been on the plane to Australia [yes, I know he had hit a double against Pak] and then been in the 11 with someone like Sehwag in the squad

my 2 cents
If you hit a double-century in your most recent Test series and have not retired (or were not a replacement player), you play the next.

No two ways about.

sure just like you have a spinner take a 5-er on a turning wkt in a series in India and then you play him on a seaming wkt at Durban *rolleyes*

Mishra is in the squad, Chawla isn't, IIRC.
Ah, my fault. Mishra then.

You want Gagandeep Singh in? He looked most unimpressive in the IPL. Although I am the aware of crossing between formats, Gagandeep looked slow and was absolutely hammered in the IPL. Rarely does a strong Test bowler get hammered so hard in T20.
It's a different game. If you're going to dismiss someone with a fantastic history of performance, at least do it after giving them a shot.

Batsmen and fingerspinners are not the same thing.

Whatever it takes!!!
Ideally, assuming all of the fab five are gone.. this is the Indian side I would like to see..

Gambhir
Sehwag
Kaif
Rohit Sharma
Badrinath
Raina
Dhoni
Harbhajan
Mishra
Zaheer
Ishant

If we are playing 3 seamers, get in Munaf instead of one of the spinners.

If Irfan gets some kind of bowling form going again, though...

Gambhir
Sehwag
Kaif
Rohit Sharma
Badrinath
Dhoni
Pathan
Harbhajan

typical reply .... so you agree that you won't pick an ordinary spinner who did well on a spin friendly pitch in India on a tour to SA or Aus .... thanks

Yes, and I also agree that this is utterly irrelevant to what you do when a batsman is the one under the microscope.

If Mishra plays, despite both supporting and having a bet on Australia for this series, i won't be able to help myself wanting him to take wickets. Easily my favourite Indian bowler. What a loveable little man.

We could do this all day and I really have a politics essay to be getting on with.

Tendulkar - will retire at his option, not possibly before 2011, unless plagued by injuries.

Laxman - Only 33 and contributing in crises, so will be around for a while in tests, and his value in the slips is underrated.

Dravid - Second to Kumble in the "endangered" category. Needs to prove himself every series. My guess is he is certain till England series. After that?

Ganguly - Goners, unless he does the "Elvis reborn" blasting two hundreds in this series. In that case he won't go till 2010.

Kumble - Most endangered. Terrible stats this year, most unimpressive in SL and Bangalore. His fielding is a joke due to age. Likely to be goners after the Australian series, unless he does a Ganguly picking fifers, and in that case becomes eligible for Voluntary Retirement Scheme, which in all likelihood, he will exercise post the England series.

So, post England series I will not be surprised to see the following squad:

V Sehwag
G Gambhir
V V S Laxman (How I wish him to be at No.3)
S Tendulkar
S Badrinath
R Sharma / Yusuf Pathan (we badly need a Symmo, and he appears the best bet)
M S Dhoni
H Singh
P Chawla/ A Mishra / S Sreesanth
Z Khan
I Sharma

Ganguly since his comeback into the Indian team has ........

- scored 1842 test runs (more than any other Indian batsman),
- at an average of 47.23 (only Sehwag amongst the batsmen is better at 51.17 for 1177
- has scored 4 Test hundreds (only Sachin has as many)
- has 13 scores over 50 (only Sachin has as many
- has enjoyed his finest year in over 12 years of Test cricket when he scored 1106 runs in 2007 (his previous best being 945 in 2002.
- he was the only Indian to cross a 1000 Test runs in 2007

.... yet we are looking at his leaving the Indian team at the end of this series.

I tried to see how the other members of the Indian famous/notorious "Fab Five" were faring during the same period. Have a look.

Code:
[B]Player Inns NO 50s 100s HS Runs Avg[/B]
Sehwag	24	1	2	3	319	1177	51.17
Ganguly	43	4	9	4	239	1842	47.23
Sachin	36	3	9	4 *154	1558	47.21
Laxman	37	8	10	2 *112	1356	46.76
Dravid	43	4	7	2	129	1292	33.13
This covers the period from 15th December 2006 till date. Almost two years and eight Test series (including the incomplete current one.

They havent been a disaster (Dravid has been mediocre), have they. Wonder how many Indians baying for their blood realise how tough an act this is to follow and how much are we asking from the youngsters. Besides, how much damage it would do to the Indian team in the immediate future if all of them were to leave.

So forget about retiring, voluntary or forced. Just drop any one (or more) of them if his/their current form so warrants and bring in the youngster/s who seems most deserving as replacement. Allow the youngster to prove his worth in the side and cement his place while allowing the dropped senior to try and fight his way back into the side if he so desires.

This is the way to do things. It is sensible and it is professional.
