Newly elected chairman of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) Ghulam Mohammad Alamgir Tuesday had a meeting with representatives of the Dhaka League Clubs, reports UNB.

Representatives from 72 clubs of Premier Division, First Division, 2nd Division and 3rd Division were present in the meeting held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) conference room in the city.

BCB member and the immediate past CCDM chairman Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu was also present.

Talking to the reporters after the meeting, Engr Alamgir said: "CCDM is the platform of domestic cricket… we'll try to increase the volume of cricket and also try to develop the skill of our players day by day. We'll also organise more tournaments throughout the year."

Alamgir, who is also the chairman of the tournament committee, informed that the Premier League matches would now be on two-day basis with 90 overs played on each day.

Later, the top six teams (super six) will play four-day matches for the CCDM Cup. "We'll implement this in the Premier Division so that we can groom many longer version players," Alamgir said.

He said they would appeal to ICC to accord recognition to the next season's CCDM Cup as First Class tournament.

He also gave indication to increase the number of twenty20 matches in the Premier Division, while this shorter version cricket will also be introduced for the first time in the First Division.

The newly appointed CCDM chairman said they would increase annual donation to the clubs, which could be around Tk 1.0 million (10 lakh) for the topflight teams. "We'll also make some additional donations to the clubs to improve their ground facilities."

Asked if he has any plan to make the metropolis cricket more attractive and crowd pulling, he said: "We won't be able to bring people to the field by force. If we can deliver good cricket, can get some talented players and keep on trying, we can hope to see more supporters."

When his attention was drawn to the poor amount in the local tournament sponsorship, Alamgir, a veteran cricket organiser, said: "I have just begun my job. I can assure you of doing something positive to fulfil our minimum expectations (from sponsorships)."

Although the BCB election is knocking at the door, the CCDM chairman sounded positive about fulfilling all the initiatives he plans to take. "You have to keep things rotating… also have to take everything with a positive attitude."

So how is First Class Status given? Is it determined by the boards or the ICC?

Good news. About time we had more proper cricket. I can see some huge mismatches early on though - the Premier League normally has a much larger range in standards than the NCL. Should be interesting, anyway.

A strong side that could easily match their achievements of last season - provided the internationals are regularly available, which seems unlikely with the forthcoming vist of New Zealand and the following tour of South Africa. In Imrul, Nazmus and Tushar they should always be able to field three strong domestic batsmen, backed up by a secure wicket-keeper and a varied attack. Whether Murad, Ziaur and Dolar can carry the bowling when Mashrafe and Razzak are away is however doubtful.

Rajshahi were perhaps a touch unlucky to miss out on the NCL title last time around and should be among the challengers again this year. In Junaid and Jahurul they have a solid opening pair, while Naeem Islam should be pushing for a national team slot, especially in the shorter format. A balanced bowling attack has the capability to destroy sides, although the absence of Farhad Reza means the tail isn't as long as in previous years. Saqlain Sajib's left-arm spin was the find of last season.

Dhaka have been ravaged by the ICL exodus. Mohammad Rafique and - perhaps more so - Mosharraf Hossain will be sorely missed. The latter was outstanding last season; a once fearsome bowling attack must now be carried by the inexperienced Mahbubul Alam and Shahadat, both of whom may play little due to international commitments. A difficult season awaits.

Chittagong boast a strong top-order, but the retirement of Ehsanul Haque deprives them of perhaps the most consistent batsman on the domestic circuit in recent years. Marshall Ayub, however, is a worthy replacement. Kamrul Islam and Tareq Aziz form an underrated opening duo with the ball, but often lack support. It is difficult to see them bowling out sides on more placid wickets.

Khulna: Khulna v Sylhet*
Khulna 178 (61.2) - Nabil Samad 8-61
Sylhet 42-6 (21.2) - Ziaur Rahman 3-9

The wickets tumbled on day one on what would appear a lively wicket. Khulna made a steady start, with Nazmus Sadat (43) and Mostafizur Rahman (48) moving them to 129-2. Then left-arm spinner Nabil Samad ripped through the middle and lower order, claiming figures of 21-4-61-8; the last seven wickets fell for just 49 runs. When Sylhet fell to 18-5 in reply, 178 looked like a monumental total. Golam Mawla was forced to retire hurt and Abul Hasan was caught behind off the final ball of the day to leave Sylhet in the mire.

Rajshahi: Rajshahi* v Barisal
Barisal 186-7 (90) - Imran Ahmed 53*, Sajidul Islam 43*; Alamgir Kabir 6-53

It was slow going in Rajshahi as the away side crawled through the day, scoring at barely two runs an over. Alamgir Kabir was the wrecker-in-chief, taking the first five wickets to fall to reduce Barisal to 52-5. Imran and Sajidul led the fightback with an unbroken stand of 8, the former occupying the crease for over five hours and 238 balls. Suhrawadi Shyvo finished the day with the figures of 22-7-53-6.

The perennial strugglers, Barisal could well be the main beneficiaries from the ICL exodus, losing only Shahriar Nafees, who never really set the domestic scene alight. Arafat Salahuddin was the stand-out all-rounder in the NCL last time around and provides the team with good balance. Watch out for Nasir Hossain, a young offspinning all-rounder, and Raisul Islam, who impressed with the bat last season.

No Alok Kapali or Golam Mabud this year, who have both fled to the ICL, nor Enamul Haque, who is playing in the Ranji Trophy for Maharashtra. The side looks light on batting, especially without Mushfiqur Rahim who is likely to miss most of the year on international duty. Mithun Ali, the U19 opener and keeper-batsman, should get the opportunity to impress. Nabil Samad's left-arm spin is likely to be the key with the ball.

Khulna: Khulna v Sylhet*
Khulna 178 (61.2) - Nabil Samad 8-61

Khulna 187 (67.4) - Subashis Roy 5-43, Nabil Samad 5-73
Sylhet 18-2 (5)

Khulna look set to start their title defence with a win after skittling Sylhet for 74, then posting a more than decent second innings total on a very poor wicket. Tushar Imran (35), Saghir Hossain (30), Ziaur Rahman (39) and Dolar Mahmud (31) all made useful contributions, while Nabil finished with match figures of 13-134. Ziaur and Dolar then struck twice before the close of play, dismissing Golam Rahman and nightwatchman Nazmul Hossain.

Rajshahi: Rajshahi* v Barisal
Barisal 273 (123.2) - Imran Ahmed 110, Sajidul Islam 50; Alamgir Kabir 7-76
Rajshahi 162-7 (54) - Sajidul Islam 6-38

Barisal manoevred themselves into a strong position on day two, with Imran (355 balls, 7 fours) and Sajidul taking their stand to 93, before the last two wickets contributed a further 75. Rajshahi stumbled in reply: Shakil Haider made 42, but wickets fell at regular intervals to Sajidul's lef-arm swing, which bowled four batsman and trapped another leg before.

I think he's retired. He's not in the Chittagong squad list and isn't playing at the moment (although, neither is anyone from Dhaka or Chittagong). I read somewhere that he has become a selector for either the U19 or the Academy side.

Khulna: Khulna (12) beat Sylhet* (4) by 35 runs
Khulna 178 (61.2) - Nabil Samad 8-61
Sylhet 74 (34.2) - Ziaur Rahman 3-20, Robiul Islam 3-22
Khulna 187 (67.4) - Subashis Roy 5-43, Nabil Samad 5-73
Sylhet 256 (79.4) - Rajin Saleh 135; Robiul Islam 5-60, Ziaur Rahman 4-63

A glorious rearguard action from Rajin Saleh (229 balls, 8 fours, three sixes) was not enough for Sylhet, as they posted easily the highest total of the match batting last, but were made to pay for their collapse late on the opening day. They slipped to 34-5, before Saleh shared stands of 86 with Sharifullah (38) and 132 with Nabil Samad (33).

Rajshahi: Rajshahi* v Barisal
Barisal 273 (123.2) - Imran Ahmed 110, Sajidul Islam 50; Alamgir Kabir 7-76
Rajshahi 215 (71.5) - Sajidul Islam 6-51
Barisal 149-4 (70)

Despite their turgid progress, Barisal remain in control against Rajshahi. Lower order resistance from Mohammad Shahzada (40) took the home side above 200, but Uttam Sarkar (35) and Nasiruddin (45) dug in. Nasir Hossain is 30 not out at the close.

Fatullah: Dhaka v Chittagong
Dhaka 210 (72.4) - Mohammad Younus 5-59, Tareq Aziz 4-44
Chittagong 48-0 (19)

Play finally got underway on day three at Fatullah. An experienced Dhaka top order misfired and they soon found themselves 44-3. Nazmul Hossain top scored with 45, while there were also contributions from Javed Omar (43) and Marshall Ayub (36). Left-arm spinner Younus took a maiden five wicket haul.

I had Marshall Ayub down as in the Chittagong squad, not the Dhaka side, but it appears that he hasn't moved division.

Rajshahi 135-3 (35) - Farhad Hossain 56*; Tariqul Islam 3-56

Barisal's slow go - Shuvo conceded 45 from 34 overs - led to a dull draw, although it gave Farhad Hossain a hit-out and allowed Tariqul Islam time to take his first wickets of the year.

Fatullah: Dhaka* (6) drew with Chittagong (9)
Dhaka 210 (72.4) - Mohammad Younus 5-59, Tareq Aziz 4-44
Chittagong 212-9 dec (82) - Tariq Ahmed 73; Arafat Sunny 5-46
Dhaka 64-2 (20)

Chittagong collapsed from 189-4 to just cling onto a first-innings lead. Gazi Salahuddin, Nafees Iqbal, Masumud Dowla and Faisal Hossan all reached 20, but only Tariq converted his start into a half-century. More wickets for left-arm spinners, in this case to Arafat Sunny, Dhaka's replacement for Mosharraf Hossain.

What about Enamul Haque jr, still only 21 and last played a Test in early January (was impressing England tourists as long as five years ago IIRC). Doesn't seem to be considered for ODIs, although he has a decent record in the few games he's played. Or do Bangladesh have too many SLA bowlers as it is?
