I know that these guys [Laxman, Dravid, Ganguly and Kumble] are not cool enough for international cricket now. I have been saying that since the series against RSA, during the SL series and now. It pains to see India lose with these guys struggling and making the other team and their players look good, especially knowing deep down that someone else would have done a more decent job and given a fight
There would be instances were these guys will come up with good performances here and there and their fans will be like 'they are back' and say stuff like 'all those who thought that they were dead eat their words' but then the old story would continue, they would fail more often than they would succeed and make India pay the price for not being creative and daring enough
Most strategist will tell you that if you continue doing the same thing, you are likely to get the same result [which is what we are seeing for the the last 2-3 series]. To improve or get better results, one has to make changes and take some risks
It's the ability to take risks, make changes, be creative and know what lies in the future that separates the winners [like 5%] from the rest [like 95%]. It's painful to see that despite having the resources, Indian think tank be it in politics, BCCI, the selectors usually make up from the 95% and thus continue the mediocrity
Take top companies for example, do they design products based on what the customers want or do they design products based on what they feel what the customers would want? If successful companies did market research and made strategies based on that then you would hardly move forward and come up with innovative products. Take cellphones for example. They are pretty common now but if you had done MR at the time when they were not available, most ppl would have said it's not something they would use espicially considering its high price at that time] but design it and make it work and ppl will want one. Ask most ppl would they want to do 200 mph in a car and most will be like they are no roads where they can do that but design a sports car like Ferrari and you will have a waiting list for ppl wanting it!!!!
The selectors [or any decision making body for that matter], just like, the successful companies that know what the customer wants before customers know what they want, should know where a team is heading before most know that. If we are to have bunch of ppl, who see what the nation sentiments [the 95%] are and act accordingly then the result will usually be towards mediocrity than brilliance
just my 2 cents
