Ganguly to retire after Australia Tests

SS6

Cricket Spectator
Although Ganguly was an exciting batsman and a fighter of renown he was also a questionable choice as a leader. His lackadaisical approach to fielding and running between the wickets set a standard that was pitiful and probably cost his team a few victories.

Doubtful. Just compare his record to his predecessors. He instilled a sense of belief and changed the culture around in that team like few others have.

Perhaps but with the players he had at his disposal they could have done a lot better imo. Underperformed away from home particularly. With the likes of Dravid, Sehwag, Laxman, Tendulkar, Kumble and H. Singh all of whom are great players the team's record is not as good as you would expect.

Underperformed? You realize that with many of the same players, India did not win a single Test between 1986 and 2000 away from home? Not a single one. They completely turned it around overseas and exceeded every expectation that had been set for a decade and a half.

Very difficult to win outside of India without anything more than average pace/seam bowlers. Which is what has held us back forever really.

Good point - got me thinking but as I said previously the team he possessed was superb and they should have won a lot more. I suppose the culture of touring doesn't agree with the Indian team and to his credit Ganguly installed some fighting spirit. Doesn't excuse his less than enthusiastic fielding and selfish running between wickets.

Sharma was brilliant in Australia last season and Zaheer is a talent. True the pace/seam attack of the past was average. Should have performed better with those spinners closing up an end.

Perfect time to retire IMO. Good on him. Probably would've been dropped sooner or later anyway. As others have said one of India's great captains and a good batsman especially in ODIs.

Quite possibly the best captain India has ever had. Considering his struggles, it is amazing that his average never dipped below 40 in Tests. He'll definitely be missed. India should certainly try to make more players like him - he was a huge part of the reason why India did not win an overseas Test in 15 years, and then began winning one almost every series.

Indian cricket owes a lot to him - I hope he has a successful series and retirement.
Might be stating the obvious here, but I think Ganguly was really the first Indian captain to adopt the "take no prisoners" approach with his team, and for that India owes him a lot.

TBH, I thought he was overrated as a batsman until I saw him score that ton in Brisbane. One innings shouldn't affect how you rate someone, but to me he really stood up on that occasion and for me it showed him as a quality player.

So funny to watch all the conspiracy theories floated around.

Yesterday, in a program titled "Dial C for Cricket" on Neo Cricket, Anshuman Gaekwad and the host were discussing this issue and it was amazing how they were clinging on to every word that was said by Sourav.

Sample this: "These 4 tests will be my last test matches and I hope we go out on a winning note".. Guess what Gaekwad and the host are discussing.. Not the fact that Ganguly is one of the best captains we have ever had, not the fact that he is one of the all time great ODI batsmen, not the fact that he was a part of one of the greatest middle orders test cricket has seen....... It is about how he could say 4 tests when he was picked for only 2? Does this mean there really was a deal and a golden handshake?? And what does he mean by "WE"? Are we going to see more senior players hang up their boots after this????

Seriously, there is bad media and there is the Indian media.......

Indeed, Filter out the substance and discuss the filth. Pathetic. Even worse is that it is coming out from a player, Gaekwad is one of our former cricketers and was a coach not too long ago.

Gaekwad was actually worse than even that host guy...

Srikkanth told something like "I pray God that he does well, scores lots of runs playing without pressure of thinking about selection and I hope he goes out with a lot of runs"..

Gaekwad was saying "Why should Srikkanth want him to go OUT with a lot of runs? If he scores a lot of runs, should he not want him IN the side and talk him out of retirement???"

It is not just the selectors who are a bunch of jokers, these idiots calling themselves experts on TV shows are even worse......

Good move, indeed. While a lot of image-building has happened about his time as captain, and after, the best of Sourav Ganguly would have to be in the late 1990's. That's when we saw a free-flowing, elegant Sourav, scoring loads of runs in his favourite area down the ground, in the off-side. Who can forget his best innings as a one-day opener, at the time pinch-hitters were around? No doubt, there are many more things he could have done, but at that time, he was one of the best around.

Please ignore that show. It's an on-air slugfest between callers and experts alike.

Tbh, Indian media has a problem with everything, when the senior players don't retire they tarnish them and their achievements everyday and demanding for these players to retire so the youngsters could get a chance, and when they announce retirement they start talking all this ****, so i just consider India media as crazy ****s on the loose.

Can't say anymore that hasn't already been said. But it's fantastic to see Sourav go out on his terms. Arguably India's greatest captain and a wonderful leader on and off the field. When on song there were few better batsmen through the off side than Sourav Ganguly.

Really sad to see him go, but delighted that he made a strong, dignified exit. Hope to see him play for Kolkata Knight Riders for some time yet.

Ricky Ponting claims that Gangu's retirement will add immense pressure on Indian team and says the aussies went through same pressure when Steve Waugh, Warne and McGrath retired.

I love Ganguly but it's hardly McGrath and Warne going on the same day. If they stagger these retirements over a couple of years, I think the pressure will be fine.
