I'm the manager of Ghana, I have no decent left backs (have to play a CB who is decent in the left back role), and no back up goal keeper to Richard Kingson (of any note).
There's a glitch about African goalkeepers. I've managed two African teams, Ghana and Ivory Coast, on my game, and with both teams I found that when I took the job, there was not one single goalkeeper from that nation listed on the game as a real person. Weird.

Vidic has scored around 7 goals for me so far and November has just started. Six of them were from corners and the other was from a blistering drive at the edge of the box after a free kick clearance. Ferdinand's scored a few too from corners.

Been on various sites and found one which offered help in setting up corners. Works wonders if you have the right players.

I hate Siena, who decide to play super negative football to hold me to a 0-0 draw, which has cost me my top spot and put me on level points with Inter who go to 1st but have a better for and against then me. The good thing is that they have Juventus and I have Parma, and I always score heaps against them for some reason.

My Man Utd game has (seemingly) died. :(

Have a back-up version of it from three months back (game time), see if this one doesn't crash when it gets to a certain date. Suspect it may be due to the attempt by the computer to schedule the World Club Championship when the last one wasn't completed (for some reason the final was never played, was left as an unscheduled fixture). Strange, anyway.

Hope it hasn't died as I can't be arsed to start a new game with 09 only a month or two away.

Not really what I use. Set Vidic to near post and most of the corners go to him. Most of the rest go to Ferdinand who's challenging the goalkeeper.

Tbh the corners on 08 are rubbish and really amount to cheating, one assumes that this will be fixed in 09.
AWTA, never go for these "tactics" tbh, totally takes the fun and realism out of the game for mine. I score from corners on a realistic enough basis anyway, so I fail to see the need to do this. But like you say, assume this will be one of the things addressed in FM09.

As it stands, these are the new features:

*
3D Match Engine – This year’s match engine has seen more testing than ever before having been extensively beta tested in Football Manager™ Live for the past year.

The famous Football Manager™ match engine can now be viewed in full 3D with motion captured animations the players. Sports Interactive has been working on the 3D match engine with the support of SEGA Japan’s football development team who provided the motion capture data and some of the animations.

You can now watch your matches in 3D from multiple camera angles and re-watch any part of the match by fast forwarding and rewinding the action using a new match time bar that flags the key moments in the game.

The old 2d view of the match engine is still there, especially for those people whose computers aren’t powerful enough to take advantage of the 3d views.
* TV View – Watch your matches in new full screen TV view and customise your match day screen with widgets to view the information you need as a football manager, be it player performance, match action zones, pitch radar, latest scores and many more.
* Assistant Manager Feedback – Pre-match and in-match feedback from your Assistant Manager on how the team is performing and your player’s motivation levels, as well as hints on how your tactics are working and how you could outwit the opposition’s tactics.
* Improved Media – SI have worked hard to reflect the greater impact the media has been having in recent years on the world of football, in the in-game dealings with the press. The game now features more news stories, more detail and greater media interaction than ever before, creating an even more realistic simulation of the football world.
* Press Conferences – Attend pre-match and post-match press conferences with local and national journalists and build up relationships with them over time, but choose your answers carefully because they could come back to haunt you in the media at a later date.
* Transfer System – Completely new and re-written transfer system code, providing an even more realistic simulation of real-life football transfers.
* Transfer Rumours – View the latest news on what players are being speculated on, and who’s said to be interested in securing their services.
* Board Confidence – Following on from its addition in Football Manager™ 2008, board confidence has been expanded and improved. In addition, the board will now also feedback to you on your squad harmony and the club’s stature in the football world.
* Preferred Moves – Train your players to learn ‘preferred moves’ to add to their game. For example, train central defenders to not dive into tackles, or wingers to do stepovers before crossing the ball.
* Female Manager – For the very first time you can now play as a female manager. All of the text in the game now also has a female gender so the game represents female managers and staff in the game in the correct gender.
* Realistic Finances – SI have listened to feedback from all of their researchers to try and model every single financial area of the game correctly for each country, including transfers, staff wages, budgets, ticket prices, season tickets, competition bonuses and club sponsorships.
* Updated Competitions – Fully updated for the new 2008/09 football season with all the latest league, club and player data, featuring over 5,000 playable clubs from over 50 countries, and around 350,000 players and staff from around the world, drawn fresh from the famous Sports Interactive database.
* Widescreen Support – As a result of usability testing on Football Manager™ 2008, this year sees widescreen support for the game for the first time, as well as lots of tweaks to the user interface for easier navigation.

And from the podcast copy and pasted from someone's summary and edited by me,
1. Distance tracker- shows how much your player's have run and how hard are they working. (In kilometers or miles)

2. Improved team reports- Your assistant manager will prepare detailed team reports and will higlight the weakness in the squad and suggest player's you may buy to strengthen.

3. Changes in team Awards- overall history of team awards will be available.

4. More options while going on holidays regarding job applications( Top half, bottom half clubs etc...)

5. Player Ratings- players playing for less than 10 minutes on coming on as substitutues DO NOT get rated so that their average ratings do not go down.

6. Feeder Clubs- Once you have gained the trust of your Boardroom you can ask the board for a SPECIFIC feeder club/parent club!

7. Ability to Loan players will be improved. Specific details can be sent to clubs asking them to loan players.

8. Stadium Expansion will now begin after the last home game of a season so that the stadium with improved capacity is ready by the time the season kicks off.

9. In countries like Spain where clubs have their own "B" teams, these teams will not be regarded as reserve teams anymore but shall be seen as feeder clubs.

10. Agent Transfer rules...not really sure about this...
Example: French Choker/Joker rule. Anyone know what that is?

The fact that they feel they have to explicitly make that point makes me feel somewhat dubious over it tbh.

Can see why they promote it though, because they have so much more testing data for their engine than they've had in any other year.

Still, revamped transfer & ME...nah, I'll wait for 2010.

Yeah, fair enough really, I just still have the lingering memory of them saying similar things about FM08 and the following patches....

Though tbh if it works well and is really good then that's great, but once the novelty has worn off I can't see it adding that much to the game.

If they really have improved assistant feedback then that's huge. Also need better regens. Sick of getting high potential centre backs and keepers who are 170cm tall.

Yeah, regens who just develop at a reasonable speed would be nice. Inflation would be another thing I would like to see stamped out, not that it's a huge problem but it knarks me to see average players being transferred for up to £30m.

I've heard up to 3 years testing it, but I have no idea how true it is, probably not IMO.

Even if that is true then I'd still be worried, all they need to do is make a slight chance to the code at a late stage of development and it could potentially make a huge impression on the match engine, and mess it up. And yet they could then spend the next 4 months trying to work out why and rush out a patch for it, as happened with FM 08.

Actually it was three years of testing different versions or whatnot according to Miles Jacobson. They would develop something and find it wasn't what they wanted and start over again until this final thing that they have now which took three years.Up to last weekend it went from 50% of the animations being in to 33% as they decided to add more to it.

Nice that SI interact with their consumers and take their suggestions into consideration. a lot of the features are from feedback on the official forum. There are some more features but I'll have to listen to the first podcast to get them. Could wait until they list all of them near November but that's too long.
