Who would you pick to bat at no.6 for India for the forthcoming test series against Australia ?

Kaif or Badri would be the guys I would pick with Kaif first in line.
He was in good form in the last Indian domestic season and he made a good score against a fairly decent Aussie A attack in Bangalore.

I personally think the Aussies would be pretty happy to see Saurav in the team.
He has never played particularly well against them and they know his game quite well.
They would be less sure about Kaif - he's been away from the international circuit for a couple of years and by all accounts, he's made a number of technical improvements in that time.
Also I suspect Australia will pursue a similar strategy to 2004 of containment, whereby they attempt to deny the Indian batsmen the boundary scoring options they thrive on.
I think to counter that you will need batsmen who can rotate the strike well and both Kaif and Badri fit that bill

Kaif will be the best bet but I don't think he will have an overly successful series will average 35 at best.

As much as I'd love to see Subra in the lineup, Kaif has been fantastic in the A games and has by all accounts improved his technique.Definitely deserves a long run in the team and is probably better suited lower down in the order. Subra just debut when Rahul hangs up his bat.

Badri and Kaif can rotate the srtike, but i am not sure the old legs at the other end would be too keen on running around as scoring in boundaries is their prefered option.

Anyways i would have Laxman at 6 and Badri at 5.

I would prefer Dhoni at 6, followed by a bowling all-rounder at 7 and then the bowlers

the automatic choices for some of the 5 batting spots in my book are: Sehwag, Gambhir & Tendulkar .... Laxman, Badri and Kaif, along with Dravid if he shows good form in the game against Delhi, can battle it out for the other two :p

Laxman is a certain starter. Very Very Special is awesome against the Aussies. Dhoni at 6 would be a dire decision also IMO unless the bowling all rounder is capable of averaging 30-35 with the bat and around 30 with the ball. Is anyone capable of this?

Ganguly is not selected for Irani trophy and I dont see him getting picked for the Aussie series. Badri is my choice. He should be given a fair go , for at least next 3 series. If he fails in all 3, he should be dropped for good.

As much as I dont rate him, I'd pick Ganguly.

Australia has literally 2 international quality bowlers in Lee and Clark but they have to rest sometime and Sourav could tear bowlers like Clarke, McGain, Krezja, Watson and Johnson apart when they come on as replacements.

That would force an even heavier workload on the top 2.

Badrinath and Kaif might be ok players and ready for the opportunity, but they'll be playing for their future and could play into Australia's hands by simply playing out the lesser bowlers thereby giving Lee and Clarke time to rest

I hope Kaif gets his chance to return to Test cricket. He has a reasonable Test return so far, considering he's only 13 Tests into it, domestic form has been good, and a supposed superb knock in the 'A' team game with an improved technique. Deserving of another chance for me.

Australia's biggest threats will be the opening bowlers, it's easy from there. We need an opener who'll just stick it out, even if no runs are scored. If we can get through the first fifteen, it becomes much easier as Aussies lack their usual depth.

Aakash Chopra FTW. After that, our middle order can tonk it. The biggest worry for us in this series is if the Aussie opening attack takes 2-3 wickets every time they get the ball, and our middle order will be on the backfoot and won't be able to attack the spinner and the other bowler.

Let's hope that VVS continues with his specials against the Australia

I don't see the need for playing 7 specialist batsmen unless India is playing some out-of-form batsman or playing on bowler friendly wickets .... considering how ineffective the bowling has been, I wouldn't mind giving Pathan a run as a number 7 batsman and if he is able to keep it tight with his bowling then that would help. If he is not in good form either with the bat or the ball then I would not mind playing an extra bowler

Dohni at 6. Laxman at 3, Pathan at 7. Best way to go about things. Cause if the openers can survive the Lee and Clark attack, and set up the innings, they won't need an extra batsmen, they need more bowlers to dismiss the Aussies.
