*Official* English Football Season 2008-2009

Most goals in a debut EPL season is an all-time record tbf (wasn't it?). It wasn't like all his goals were just tap ins either.
According to wiki: "the most prolific foreign goal scorer ever in a debut season in England". This is a record, but IMO a very irrelevant one. The record he beat was Ruud who scored 23 in 2001/2, and tbh I'd say the same about him as I do about Torres - very good but over-hyped.

Except that City have a strong (top 6, imo) squad before the billionaires came in, whereas West Ham had **** all over the place. Only position we lack a real quality player is LB, and Garrido is pretty good imo.
nah don't rate Garrido myself and have thought we needed a new Left Back for a while now

City were doing so well without spending above the odds
Er, were they?

City becoming a serious threat, trying to adjust to the mindset of taking them seriously as we speak.

Mind you, as long as we get a striker, they can have Berbatov. I don't think he's *that* good and his attitude stinks. That said, it's not looking like we're going to get another striker so it's quite irritating, I'd take him over nothing.

Yeah but with the players they are looking to try and sign in. You need a bit more then strong, for the money they are likely to pay. If your going to spend the money that being talked about you need a side that might push for title. Even with 3-4 big signings, I don't think their squad would be good enough.

Urgh, another Chelsea? Would hate that. City were doing so well without spending above the odds, always had a soft spot for them. Will probably finally become a bit more of a 'true' United fan should they spend left right and center ala Abromovich. But that's modern football, I s'pose.
They don't seem to have the ridiculous Abramovich money, so maybe they'll just go with a few high profile signings to go with the already solid squad. But you never know.

So you don't accept the opinion that some Liverpool (amongst other teams, including some Man United) fans have a history of seriously overating some of their players?
You're missing the point here. The club's history is irrelevant, considering how highly Torres had been rated even before joining Liverpool.

It'd have been the same wherever he went, and it'd have been justified.

We're about as strong as Chelsea was when Abramovich came in, if not a touch stronger. If these guys are serious about it and not just in it for a laugh and a giggle for a season or two, it could really be the makings of something huge.

Why?

What has he done in his career that justifies him being marked out as something special rather than just very good?

I reckon so, yeah. Considering the bulk of last year's squad gelled so quickly to bump themselves up the table for a considerable amount of time (especially after how crap they'd been the season before), I'd say they did rather well. Not sure if they'd get CL football but I was impressed with the Vidic/Evra-like signings that Sven made.

Seriously, do people in the UK ever think someone ISN'T overhyped? (apart from Ronaldo, that is) It seems as soon as a player gets any sort of accolades whatsoever from the media or fans, every other **** in England is saying that he's overhyped.

Whilst Torres certainly still has a way to go in the EPL, and is likely to have a tougher season this time around, I think it's fair to say that he more than passed the vast majority of peoples expectations last season (iirc there were quite a number of people on here who said he wouldn't pass 15-20), and has deserved a large proportion of the accolades he's received. Obviously you're going to get some fans who think he's better than Pele, but it's not like anyone ever takes them seriously anyway.

Not relative to the rest of the league, you're not. Chelsea came fourth before they became Chelski, you came 10th last year and have been unconvincing so far this year.
Can only feel that United fans in general will be extremely miffed if we're going to get outbidded by non-CL sides for our primary targets. If we bring in nobody at all, I'll be very annoyed... we need another striker, particularly with Saha out the window. We can't even rely on cripples now!

They had a strangely good start to the season that no-one expected, and then in the second half - when the signings should have been beginning to gel - they returned to normality. Given the amount of money they spent, they should have been higher than 10th IMO.

Yeah but relativity is a key issue. It's arguable but it's not a closed case.

Anyway, Chelski still had Zola at the time so of course they were better. WAG he was.

Carried a newly promoted team, as a nineteen year-old club captain, on his shoulders for four years? A goal every two and a half games for Atletico, who weren't just "not very good", but horrid until they signed Maniche and Costinho, which was in 2006.

His record looks a tad worse thanks to his first season, where he was 18, and started nearly all the games for the club.

But frankly, Ronaldo scored 42 goals last year, which was quite a few more than Torres and was also predominantly from out wide, so I think he did a fair amount more to deserve the hype.

I actually agree with your assessment of Torres (the bolded part) and I was also one of the ones who didn't think he'd pass 15-20. But quite a lot of people think he's more than that, even outside of Liverpool fans. I've heard quite a lot of people (both media pundits and general football fans) saying he's currently the best striker in the world, and IMO he just isn't.

Don't expect much out of us this season, though reckon we should be able to get a UEFA cup spot. But once Hughes has got a team in and gets them playing well together I think we will be a force. Highly disagree whoever it was that said we have no squad depth either, the only problems we have are the LB as mentioned and that most of our strikers are shagged, but overall we've got almost everything covered.
