Sri Lanka A in South Africa - Mathews' Watch

Is there thread for this? If so just merge.

My man Angelo Mathews (Sri Lanka's answer to Keith Miller) gets his first chance to impressive the selectors since he captained the U19 side in Youth World Cup.

The only other all rounders in the squad are Gihan Rupasinghe and Dilruwan Perera. Both are spin bowling all rounders so he should get some good game time. Though there is quite a few seamers in the squad.

Scored 101 and 36 in the first match against a Challenger XI, but didn't take any wickets.

South Africa A dominating the First 'Test'. But Mathews has taken a wicket and a big one of SAA captain Amla. Hopefully he gets a bat tommorrow and we can watch him all his greatness.

Looking at the squads, I cannot figure out whuat Herath is doing there. His test hopes are almost over. Sachithra Senanayake should've got the nod ahead of him. He's the most probable to partner Mendis in future SL attack.

Nice to see Paranavithana doing well. This performance will be ringing the bell for Vandort to raise his game.

Man this pitch must be a road. Sri Lankan's two slowest bats outside Vandort are scoring at 113 s/r (Tharanga) and 70 s/r (Paranavitana).

Mathews in now, should be fun, might stay up tonight and watch the start of his innings. Interesting to see him batting in the top four. If he can keep improving his batting he might be able to make the ODI side as top four batsmen and allow Kapu to bat down the order where he is more successful. Though his best chances are in Test cricket as he hasn't found his feet in ODs yet.

I don't think the side was selected with much focus on youth. Some of the guys might be young, but most seem to be the next in line. If Murali or Mendis out injuried tomorrrow then Herath would still be the next guy called in. Senanayake still should have made the squad ahead of the 3rd spinner Gihan Rupasinghe. Gihan a bit more of an all rounder, but Senanayake no mug with the bat, he averages 20 plus in FC cricket.

Potchefstroom is a road, period.

Safe to assume Yusuf Abdullah has broken down (again). His gut can just about handle four overs in 20/20.

Tis a shame Wayne Parnell is missing through injury for then South Africa would have at least one player who has a (bright) future.

Still, runs are runs. Nice to see from Paranavithan and Matthews.

Okay, we're all thinking it...given that the rest of Sri Lanka's team is composed of names like Warnakulasooriya Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan and Sanath Jayasuriya, where the hell does the name Angelo Matthews come from? He would surely be the first man named Angelo ever to play Test cricket.

Watch out for that up-and-coming Indian youngster, too, Juan Martínez García.

Russel Arnold wasnt ordinary enough for you? :)

Im not the best placed to give a full history but there are mixtures of religions and history.

Given the number of Sri Lankan players called de Silva (Portuguese I believe) then any name shouldnt really suprise.

There is also another Angelo in Sri Lankan cricket

From an Indian POV dont forget the exotically named David Johnson

Have you ever heard of Russel Arnold, Greame Labrooy and Michael Vandort playing for Sri Lanka? There are guys like Ian Daniels waiting in the wngs too.

What about the then (now also) little known spinner named Noel David who was brought as replacement for an injured batsman during India's tour of West Indies prompting the then Indian captain Sachin Tendulkar to remark, ''Noel Who?''

And some players had surnames like Engineer, Contractor etc.

South Africa ended the farce by finishing on 249 for 1, Kuhn and Puttick both scoring tons. It was up early that Kuhn's ton came off only 40 balls but that seems to have now been amended.

Why were Walters & van der Merwe missing? These two are both great prospects but neither playing
