Unfortunately, he didnt think it was and so didnt show up
Nice excuse for breaking the discipline. Oh I didn't think the meeting was important so I went fishing.

Try telling that to your bosses after missing meetings..and then tell the whole world...that missing the meeting didn't affect your work and how you have been the top performer in your organization and that's why they should give you the luxury of showing the finger to your bosses....Please try it and see how long it works..

News flash - life's not fair
Looks like the news didn't flash on you. Symonds is an average player, He is no Warne & Ponting. To put him at the level of the likes of Botham, Akhtar, Ponting and Warne is really showing off your own prejudice on the whole matter.

Not that it should matter.

I am the furthest thing from a Symonds fan, but he is (as a ODI player anyway) far far better than 'average'.

All-time great ODI player. One of the best players the format has ever seen.

No one is calling him average, but comparing him to the likes of Warne, Ponting, Botham etc is highly overstating his talent.

Sanz, we get it.

You hate Symonds because he exposed the Weed and are now so blinded by your vitriol that you spew nonsense whenever his name is brought up

And btw, look at your previous post, you called him average

It's still a pathetic article. The guy blatantly does not know what he's talking about and has no right to comment on it so severely, only those within the Australian team or close to Symonds do.

Ah well, we might as well throw the idea of free speech out the window!

And there's every chance he knows a fair bit about the situation. Who are you to assume otherwise?

If you knew anything about being a boss you'd know that it's not just "do this, do that" but a big part of it is man management

Unfortunately, the current attitude dates back to the way CA and Steve Waugh crucified Michael Slater because he didnt fit the mould

Maybe if someone hadnt bothered talking to him and gotten him help earlier, they would've discovered he actually suffered from bipolar and things would've ended far differently

I dont know whether Symonds has a genuine problem or is just a rock-ape but I do know that sacking one of the best players in the world for a "misdemeanour" (the team's words not mine) is an absolute copout and wont achieve anything

I swear to God Sanz once had a red hot go at me for bagging Symonds, and said he was a fan.

I'm sure I didn't imagine this. I will search for the relevant posts.

I'd reply, but I've already judged you as an asshole based on, well, nothing really.

*Submits article to newspaper about how much of an asshole Voltman is*

Well, at least your successful defence for a defamation case on such an article would be "truth". :(

Apparently Symonds might quit the game altogther. And he won't be considered for India UNLESS he shows Australia his commitment. I say: **** off to the ICL, and give Watson & Katich chances that they've richly deserved.

Your avatar takes the edge off that opinion :p

I'd imagine Symonds booked his offshore adventure before the team meeting was called and thought 'bugger it, I'm not cancelling now' (possibly even getting the ****s with the timing after it was called and therefore going anyway). Not saying it's right, and if he did indeed book after then it was extremely silly.

Can't see how team management did anything other than the right thing here, tbh.

I wager he wouldn't have missed the meeting were this mid-World Cup or if they were playing India, England or one of the other better established sides.

Point is, you can't just arbitrarily decide the Bangas aren't worth your attendance at a team meeting where it's been designated compulsory by management.

I wonder how many of those who hold Symonds act in a 'sympathetic' light and the 'punishment' as harsh, have been in serious leadership roles themselves ?

Symonds is not the most liked cricketer in the world due to some pre-set notions that a lot of people have about him, but still he is an awesome cricketer and a real asset to the Australian side, yes... he has not been disciplined enough on a few occasions, but if he can get his head straight and his priorities right then there is no reason why he can't be back as early as for the Indian tour, this incident could only make him more determined to do well.

I don't think anybody is "sympathetic" about Symonds, because tbh Symmo had this coming, but the harsh bit probably lies in the way the journos have blasted him apart as if he has whacked a player from his team or something, Symonds made a mistake and the team punished him appropriately, and to Symonds' credit he accepeted the punishment without making much fuss.

No, more than Symonds, I am appalled at your hypocrisy. Symonds deserves the punishment and I have no sympathy for him. And I have no reason to hate him or any other cricket player.

I haven't been following Symonds' behavior in last 4-5 years but after reading stuff in last few days, it is pretty clear that this is not the first time he has shown finger to the game of cricket and to his team mates and it is quite obvious to most people that those pep-talks weren't really working and he needed something like this.

While this punishment may come across as harsh and unfortunate, it does seem like a right one to me. If you can accept it as my opinion without accusing me of hating him, fine, if not, then it says a lot about you not me, not that there was any doubt about your objectivity(or lack of it) on anything that you say on this forum.
