It all went to plan today, but I feel that it was a poor plan with little margin for error. Anyone need me to elaborate?

Would agree actually, if KP or Fred go early still reckon we're buggered.

Bell tho, what is the point? If he's going to score at that pace why don't we just play Strauss or Cook who both at least have the merit of actually being openers.

Thought Patel did well, but he looks slightly larger now than the last time I saw him on Sky for Notts, so he'll have to watch that. Potentially a handy cricketer for us tho.

In addition, Anderson looked out of sorts and this is a main issue with having two daisy bowlers in your playing XI - the part timers could have easily gone for runs and consequently Anderson coming on and going for more runs himself. Moreover, Prior was dropped on 20 - and although dropped catches do occur, the chances of Prior falling often in the 20s is high and this could have left England in dire straits, with an early wicket lost and one batsman in who is scoring very slowly.

Regarding the plan in specific, scoring 275 when it all goes perfectly to plan on a flat wicket is a horrible situation and one which cannot create a team destined for long term success.

PS: What do you mean by 'would agree actually'

Good win by England.

Personally reckon SA should blame Kallis for the loss. What was he thinking getting Bell and Prior out? South Africa were well on top until they actually got wickets and let KP and Freddie come to the crease.

Hahaha... you can say that again, or one could always blame him for his slow batting.
Good win for England nonetheless, tbh wasn't really expecting England to win even after they scored 275, but none of the Saffie batsmen applied themselves after getting a start (apart from Kallis), decent combined bowling effort from England, good comeback for Harmison, he would take some confidence out of that performance.
Btw why did Anderson only bowl 3 overs, did he get injured or something?

Yeah nah, we always seem to start well the first game of a series, will be interesting to see if we win another game.

Expect Flintoff's bowling to improve, not played too many ODI's recently has he? Must be his first series in a year, so yeah, there's some improvement there from him. We're a different side with him in because we can afford to have one seamer who doesn't have to bowl all his overs if he's having a bad day, plus we double the number of
capable batsmen in the side.

Actually don't mind our bowling and we're batting fairly deep...if we could magically find 3 top order batsmen we'd be an average side.

Briliant batting from KP and Flintoff. The less said about the England top order the better though. When you have a 158 run fourth wicket partnership going at 7 and a half an over and still only end up with 275 you know the top order have really mucked it up.

Bell is never going to be a great one day opener.

Pick Denly!
...who averages 37 in FC and 26 in OD (with a strike rate of 67 to boot).

England selectors have rarely done things right since 2003 imo, but, again imo, staying away from Denly is one of them.

Collingwood has been banned from 4 one day internationals. He has missed the last NZ ODI, the match against Scotland and the 1st ODI against SA. Does the cancelled 20/20 count as a match. The way I see it is if there wasn't a toss and team sheet with his name on it he can't have missed it. Will he be back for the 2nd or 3rd ODI? Who will he replace?

He was banned for Englands next 4 limited over games. Totally irrelevent if they were called off or not. Unless the game was rearranged, then he probably couldnt count it. He'll probably come in for Wright, cant see him replacing Bopara.

Which would mean Bopara batting 7 with Patel at 8 and neither of them getting much (if any) bowling. I'm not arguing with you as such because it will almost certainly happen, but it's still pretty daft AFAIC. England really shouldn't need that much specialist batting, especially given the tactics they employ at the top of the order.

Having a specialist batsman come in at #8 just nullifies any advantage having a player like Flintoff gives you.

Yea probably, Bopara should go tho.

Wright may be relatively crap overall but at least he offers something a bit different, has a bit of an x factor that Bopara hasn't shown. I think it's worth investing with Wright and somewhere he might just smash a 30 or 40 or bowl a couple of very good overs that'll win you a game. Lets face it whichever one of those two you play they're not going to get the opportunity to do much more than that anyway.
