Personally I can't see how Manawatu didn't get the chop, they've improved lately, but I still think they are significantly weaker than most of the other sides. Counties are in the same boat too, especially with the stadium issues they had last year.
Obviously it wasn't based all on performance - although I'm sure that was part of a number of factors. Their facilities are excellent and they have a good group of young players so I personally never really thought they'd be in danger of missing out.

Surprised to see Northland drop down, Manuwatu and Counties were the two I'd have thought would have been in trouble.

And on our shield challenge: We were simply outpossessioned, though it was skewed a bit by our shocking, sub-par lineout. Neither Corlett or Annabell are Air NZ Cup standard imo. Every damn lineout we threw the ball away, just like the match against Harbour.

Outstanding stuff from Manawatu, a strong first half followed by several Waikato tries but then an extraordinary comeback for a 38-38 draw.

Brilliant.

Did anyone tip that?

Nope, everyone went for Waikato (myself and Voltman get a point for getting the winning margin within five points though I think).

Thought it was another really entertaining match, led by an outstanding comeback from Manawatu. Down 38-16 I thought Waikato should be looking for 50+ but they hardly had an opportunity after that try to Mikkelson (who looks a pretty good player actually). To be honest, taking aside the first ten minutes of each half, I think Manawatu were by far the better side, and perhaps even unlucky to lose. Just a word on Matty James, I don't think he'll be back for a while, my first impression was that hes done something serious to his knee, but with Aaron Cruden stepping up with a sensational 30 minutes the Turbos will still have a fly half of some class.

Edit: Also thought it was a little odd that the commentators were going on about Harding getting the first yellow card of the season; actually Craig Clarke got one for Taranaki in the Naki vs Harbour game in round one.

64-7? Good lord. Think I tipped a single-figure margin.

Congrats to Wellington though, sounds like a fairly convincing performance.

To be honest, I thought it was more than a bit scrappy - especially in the 2nd half. The territory was a pretty even, and Counties just kept giving Wellington easy ball. The number of handling errors by Wellington players was too high, given the decent conditions.

Counties denied a couple of potential tries too, I thought.

Otago's back on track, further consigning Northland fans to depression with a 23-18 win at home.

Tend to agree, and personally I don't think the difference between the two sides was 57 points. For the first 40 minutes every time Wellington entered Counties half they scored, otherwise play was basically camped in Wellington's half. Second half as you say was scrappy and unstructured, though Counties seemed to thrive more with that sort of play and I considered them a little unlucky not to score a few more tries. I think that scrappy second half also had to do with Wellington making a few substitutes, taking Vito and Mathewson off was somewhat surprised as both were hugely impressive tonight.

Thought we were in for a great finish when Holwell scored that penalty with a minute to go...and then kicked the ball back to Otago after the restart. I think it would've been somewhat of an injustice if Otago lost, they really should've wrapped up the game earlier (in saying that Bancroft nearly did but had the ball knocked from his hand). Was surprised Noakes didn't start actually, given he had an excellent game against Southland and was hardly at fault for Otago being outclassed by Canterbury last week. I rate him higher than Bowden anyway. For Northland, Vainikolo was superb - compare that with Lelia Masaga who I can't remember making a single line break in any of Counties' three matches this season. Holwell seemed off the pace but thats hardly surprising given hes been ill for a week. Payne very impressive again, bet Waikato are enjoying that.

I guess the weekend's matches weren't that noteworthy with all the Olympics (and the All Blacks I guess) to watch. Finally caught up with all the matches, some entertaining enough encounters.

Harbour lost AGAIN, so no wins from three games - somehow they're ahead of both Taranaki and Counties Manukau though, who have a win each. I thought they were a bit hard done by, Zar Lawrence was awarded a try following a clear knock on (which went to the TMO but as it wasn't part of the act of scoring, he was helpless to call on it) as well as playing into a ridiculously strong wind in the first half which died completely in the second. Putting those two points aside, the Bay were by far the better side. Solomon King in particular was sensational in the first half and Delany was as commanding as ever.

Southland did really well to beat Hawkes Bay away from home though I feel for the Magpies somewhat, with Tim Boys scoring a very dubious try for the visitors. Lowe, Nauopu and Johnson were brilliant for Hawkes Bay but Stewart guided Southland around the park so well. I dare say that hes the form first five eight in the ANZC.

Voltman's favourite player Munro was incredibly quiet in the Canterbury v Auckland match, as was most of the Auckland side. Canterbury was sensational in the final 30 minutes of the game but Auckland, I'm sure by their own admission, were very poor at times. Hard to believe they had been so dominant against the Naki a week before and they'll be super glad that its only Manawatu challenging for the Shield this weekend (should still require a much better performance to win that though). Interesting that the goal kicking was so poor in that match which carried on to the All Black test (not that I had seen the match before watching the ABs).

As for the final match, knew I should've been backing Tasman to win but tactics got the better of me and it didn't pay off. In saying that Taranaki did lead by 10 points at one point in the second half after Austin's intercept try but the yellow cards seemed to kill them, even if Tasman didn't profit in the seven or so minutes they played against 13. At least the set pieces were a big improvement for Taranaki, areas which have been so poor in their first two games.

3 Vimes 16.00
4 SmytheNZ 14.50
5 HeathyD 13.83

The two Northern Hemisphere punters did exceptionally well in week three, New Zealanders in 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th places now. Samuel Vimes got eight points for the round, Heath scored just 2.5.

Round four kicking off tonight with Counties vs Otago. Should be a comfortable enough win for the southerners though I'm not picking them to run away with a massive victory like Bay of Plenty and Wellington have against Counties since their upset over Auckland.

Northland vs BOP is almost too close to call, I've made no pick yet because I couldn't decide. Tempted to go with the Bay though Northland at home will be a tough side to beat. Ditto with Harbour and Waikato, as either side could win it (or should that be lose it?) - its crazy to think that one of those two sides still won't have won a match after week four in the competition.

Wellington, Auckland and Canterbury shouldn't have too much trouble in their matches. Hawkes Bay vs Tasman is the other game this weekend, and I'm tipping the Magpies to recover from their loss last week against Southland to take the win. Surprised the TAB has the Makos favourites to be honest.

With the quality of rugby like we've had tonight so far its easy to see why we're getting such fantastic crowds to domestic rugby matches...

Otago almost seem to be coming down to Counties' level. Both sides have been very poor, Counties have had no structure and their play littered with errors. Otago, whilst more organised and slightly more dominant have hardly converted that into anything, and seem intent on turning the ball over and conceeding penalties. Wouldn't be surprised if Otago had a yellow card in the second half.

Had to laugh at Craig Newby's reaction to the penalty given for the tackle with no arms from Mulipola that went against the Otago flanker though..."It wasn't him, it was our winger, sir, and he smashed him!"

Honestly, that second half was probably the most appalling 40 minutes of rugby I've EVER seen. Shocking play and decision making at times, definitely the worst game of the season. Just highlights the injustice of dropping Northland yet keeping Counties who were simply aweful. Otago weren't much better and if they play like that against one of the better sides in the competition, they'll get hammered.

A couple of higher quality games tonight. Southland vs Wellington was excellent and the scoreline of 26-7 in Wellington's favour doesn't do justice to how close the match was for 60 minutes. Southland incredibly unlucky not to have scored a few tries in the first half, inches short on numerous instances. I think Wellington spent one minute in Southland's 22, while Wellington had to repel more than 13 minutes worth of Southland attack in their own 22. Fantastic counter attacking from the Lions in the final 20 minutes it must be said, to grab another bonus point (and go to 20 points out of a possible 20 on the table). I guess it does help with players like Masoe, Tialata and Tamati Ellison coming off the bench. For Southland, Matt Saunders was very prominent, so good to see him back to his best after a relatively quiet start to the season for him.

14,200 people turned up for the Northland vs BOP match, so a fantastic show of support from the locals after the decision to cut them from the competition (thats probably about 13,000 more than the number that turned up to Mount Smart last night for the Counties match). Thought that BOP's defence was outstanding, with the exception of Nigel Hunt's terrible error to gift Holwell Northland's only try. Mike Delany was excellent again, his kicking has been exceptional this season and he made a crucial one-on-one tackle of Vainikolo tonight in the dying stages that, in the end, decided the outcome of the match. In fact both fly halves led their sides around the park well as Holwell was also fantastic. Vainikolo was a bit quiet tonight, Ranger was by far the more enterprising winger for Northland.

An excellent game for Southland yesterday; and exceptional defence from the Wellington team. Southland must have been over the line at least half a dozen times in the first half, only to be held up.

I think I picked Wellington by 3 points, and that's how close the score should have been. Hard to say who the better team was, given the strength of Wellington's defence, but Southland were much the more enterprising on attack.

Brilliant game.

Was at the Southland game, just missed out on getting on TV. Was a bit sloppy at that stage. Great game tho, quality night.
