Managed to catch up with the weekend's matches a day late again. Overall thought the quality of the rugby this round was pretty average, even though a number of sides had a few All Blacks released to play for them.

Auckland vs Manawatu was terribly referreed by Keith Brown and the skill level wasn't much better at times. 14 straight arm penalties (half of which should've been free kicks IMO) and two yellow cards (at least one, CW's favourite Lachie Munro, was completely unnecessary) as well as a contentious penaltry try (which I did agree with) sums up the dominance of the officialdom. Watching Manawatu play, it was hard to believe they had the capacity to beat Canterbury at Jade Stadium. As for Auckland, they'll be lucky to hang onto the Shield come the end of the season one feels, with both Southland and Wellington set to challenge for it.

Hawkes Bay was excellent in beating a poor Tasman side, 41-6 in the end which completely went against expectations of a close game. Nice to see the Magpies finding some of the form that saw them so clinical in reaching the semi finals of last year's competition after last week's loss to Southland (that may also indicate how strong Southland are though). Was also great to see Zac Guildford and Taumalolo, two of last year's stars, having quality matches.

The game at Yarrow Stadium between Taranaki and Canterbury was very average, surprising given how superb Canterbury was, particular in the second half, against Auckland last weekend. Took 79 and a half minutes for a try to be scored which, from a fairly neutral point of view, left for some dull patches in the game. Taranaki simply have to sort out their line out; I don't wish to pass all the blame onto their hookers but with two Super 14 locks its hard not to. Pushes Taranaki back to 13th spot and well out of the top eight - personally could see it coming though, even after their victory against North Harbour in the opening round.

And speaking of Harbour, finally a win on the board. Their match against Waikato was another in week four that never really found its rhythm though at least Harbour could hang onto victory in the dying stages this time, unlike their last home match against Wellington. Gopperth led from the front and to be honest controlled the Harbour backline better than Donald led Waikato's in my opinion. Some nices touches from Donald, particularly in scoring an excellent first half try, but for the All Black first five back up to Carter, I was expecting a bit more. Waikato have real problems now, no wins from four games, and although they've got five bonus points, Auckland will surely be no pushover next week to get their first win of the campaign.

Points Table after week four:
1 BoyBrumby 27.67
2 Somerset 25.83
3 Edmunds 23.33
4 SmytheNZ 22.33
5 Vimes 22.00
6 HeathyD 20.33
Brumby leaps into first place as I give up my lead from the first three weeks. Ed managed to pick all seven results correctly (given the unpredictability of the competition, thats a fair effort) and storms into third place after floating around the bottom of the table for the first few weeks. Heath continues his slide down the table.

Fair play to Ed too. Solid effort.

Fifth week kicks off tonight with Southland vs Counties Manukau. Picking a big win to Southland at home. Taranaki vs Northland and Otago vs Hawkes Bay on Friday night; chose both away teams though I'm sure they'll be tight matches - of the four that have tipped so far, its a 2-2 split in both games. I think Wellington will end the BOP's winning streak though doubt it will be a high scoring affair. Auckland and Harbour look like favourites in the other Saturday matches, so hoping for a good weekend from teams in our region. Interesting that Rokocoko will be appearing for Auckland after a long injury layoff. And Canterbury to smash Tasman in the final game of the weekend.

Better match than last Thursday's shocker. Personally thought Southland would win by more than 23 points but Counties produced a much better performance than against Otago last week and were actually unlucky not to score a few tries of their own before their replacement flanker scored in the last minute. At least Southland were able to capitalise on their opportunties this week, whereas Wellington's staunch defence proved the difference last Friday. Nice to see Cowan appearing for the Stags, and the young first five Robert Robinson showed potential that hes got a good future ahead of him.

Bet you're thrilled with the result from the Otago v Hawkes Bay match Voltman. :p Really great defence from Hawkes Bay and along with their ability to counter attack and, for patches towards the end of the first half, throw the ball around to create space, that determined the result. Otago must be a bit worried now, a scratchy win against Counties, a loss at home to HB...and BOP next week away from home. As for Hawkes Bay, fantastic to see their season back on track after two losses in the first three weeks.

Meanwhile, also quite an entertaining match between Taranaki and Northland tonight. I think I should stop tipping Northland given I've picked them to win their last three matches and they've ended up losing them all lol. Fully deserved win to the Naki, played the smarter football with the wind in the second spell after they led by two points at the break. Their line out was MUCH better, and dominated Northland's, so good to see they've got that under control finally. A hat trick to Jonathan Spratt for Taranaki too - I'd hardly noticed him in the first four weeks to be honest.

Lots of discussion around the last weekend of the championship. :p

Wellington were brilliant against the BOP on Saturday afternoon and the only reason they won't get the Ranfurly Shield this season will be if Southland beats Auckland before they do. It was the typical story - get dominated in territory, let the opposition have as much time in their 22 metres as they like, and then counter attack with thrilling length of the field efforts. They fully deserve to be top of the table.

Meanwhile Auckland really were outplayed by a Waikato side who hadn't even won a game before last weekend. A disgraceful last 30 minutes from the Auckland side, turning the ball over with ridiculous ease, no structure, passes going everywhere. Rokocoko barely made a break and had quite noticable strapping on his arm but at least had some game time. Donald had a much better game than last week against Harbour and they'll be disappointed he has to return to the ABs. For Pat Lam's last match, the defending champs certainly didn't rise to the occasion. And for crying out loud, Toeava is not a first five and never will be - time to put him back at fullback IMO.

Canterbury demolished Tasman; first half was entertaining, second half was pretty dull. At least Tasman scored a few breakaway tries for the first half efforts but they barely threatened in the second spell. Stephen Brett played the final 25 minutes. Harbour and Manawatu was a game to miss with neither side able to get the better of their opponent. Boric was impressive again and scored the opening try of the match.

Really looking forward to the Stags challenging for the Log of Wood, if we manage to bring it home it'll be huge.

They've got more than half a chance to be honest. Taking aside their match against Wellington, who have by far the best team in the competition this year, Southland have won three and lost the other via a last minute penalty (caused by their inability to kick the ball out after the hooter). Auckland have lost three games, and looked woeful in beating the might of Taranaki and Manawatu in their other two.

I'll probably still pick Auckland but I think Southland will have more than reasonable backing.

So close :(

Robbie Robinson is a star though, was at a different level when he came on. Such a nice bloke too.

Yup not a great match at Eden Park, Auckland very lucky to still be holding the Shield IMO. In saying that, Southland can't say they didn't have their chances to snatch it from Auckland though. Wellington must be clear favourites to take it Saturday after next.

The whole weekend was a bit lacklustre IMO. Waikato with a hugely re-arranged side just beating Counties, Hawkes Bay coming back to win after a 14 point Taranaki lead, BOP nearly choking when playing into the wind against Otago (score went from 24-0 to 24-20). And then theres Northland who were woeful against Tasman in the second half in particular.

At least one things consistent, and thats a Wellington victory - led by Jane they were outstanding yet again. Canterbury also impressive against Harbour and it already looks likely that it'll be a Canterbury v Wellington final.

Anyone willing to bet against Wellington taking the Ranfurly Shield from Auckland this weekend? :p

Wellington's performance in the opening twenty minutes against Waikato was incredible and although Waikato managed to score five tries, the game was easily over by then. I don't think Wellington will be so generous on defence against Auckland, even if they go out to a similar lead. Gear with another try and Jane with more touches of brilliance - surely both are a huge chance for the end of year tour.

As for Auckland, they produced their best half of rugby for 2008 in the second 40 minutes against the BOP - ironically that was after losing Rokocoko, Braid and Munro (whos gone for the rest of the year with a dislocated elbow) in the first half. I wouldn't be that surprised if Taniela Moa started at first five this week, as he did a reasonable job filling in for Munro. I'd prefer to see Toeava at full back if he returns for the match.

Northland vs Canterbury and Taranaki vs Manawatu were shocking games. Counties were pretty bad against Hawkes Bay bar a ten minute period at the end of the first half - still lost by about 30 points even though Hawkes Bay were without Taumalolo, Naoupu, Lee and Berquist.

Otago lucky to escape with a draw against Tasman even though Noakes missed a conversion on the full time siren that would've given them the win. Their neighbours Southland were quite exceptional in the first half against a dire Harbour side, Mackintosh of all people bagging two tries. At least Harbour came back stronger in the second half; Gopperth's half time words and substitutions from Pivac at least ensured Southland didn't post 50.

The gap closes back to within a point between Brumby and myself at the top of the table. Ed made no picks and drops to bottom spot.
