Cricket Books

There was a book written about the old Surrey stumper Edward Pooley a few years ago - anyone recall who wrote it and know where I might find a copy? He was a bit of a 'character' by all accounts.

It was written by Keith Booth and called "His Own Enemy" - theres a copy at the Internet Bookshop for a fiver or else the usual suspects will, no doubt, oblige at a higher cost

Thanks, I'll look into that. I work with an Eddie Pooley and I'd be curious to know if he's some relation. Unlikely I know, but my friend is from a south London family and the cricketer Pooley died in the Lambeth workhouse. I might be able to spot a family resemblance. :)

Nice review of the Larwood book. It would also be good to see some of the SJS magic worked within the book review team :)

By the way Arch, do you want me to email you the review of Hirst and Rhodes, or do you want to cut and paste it from the other site?

SJS has written one, but we have a bit of a back log at the moment, will put it up next Thurs, as I still have one from NC, Stumpski, FF, and about 12 from you and me:-O

No I will copy and past it, but thanks for the offer:)

Cool - I'm interested to see what SJS, NC and Stumpy have done. I've got some more that I can throw together when you want them.

Would have thought there was a decent chance given Pooley's gargantuan virility (eight illigitimate children and all that).

Just picked up "Captain of the Crowd" by Tony Laughton being the story of Albert Craig (the Surrey Poet)

Looks good, will read in next, once I have finished 'The Book of The Two Maurices":)

Sean, I have an idea how many cricket books you have read but how many do you own ? It must be a fabulous library.

Of the books I have you have left out

The Fight for the Ashes - 1932-33 : Jack Hobbs
The Larwood Story - Kevin Perkins
Body-line? - Harold Larwood
And Then Came Larwood - Arthur Mailey

All worth reading.

Of the books you haven't read, I have only read Jardine's book and its disappointing.
