and his bowling 2 wickets at 61.00 econ 6.77 compared to Elliott's 5 wickets at 8.80 econ 3.56 might have meant a drop for Styris when Ryder came back but it will be someone else now.

Very glad about Shah's drop. We need Styris' experience in this current side. As Vettori said, his 87* was like a blueprint of how to play a ODI innings. I doubt that someone like Taylor could do that a.t.m.

sorry if this seems a little trival.. but i noticed McCullum shirt in the odis in england had his B McCullum .. I checked back on previous games and it just had his last name. This reminds me of when H Marshall first played. there was no reason for him to have his first intial as well as his last name because he alone was playing for NZ not him and his brother.. but latter on James was selected. I know Brendon has a younger brother playing (is he in the Otago team?) McCullums first intial all of a sudden appearing on his shirt makes me wonder, based on the Marshall boys preesdents.

They will minnow-bash a century and a fifty a piece and thus we will be stuck with them for the champions trophy. Dear-oh-dear. Can see it happening from a mile away.

I didn't see his first three innings but I thought he looked very good during his 69 and 87*. Obviously he was fortuitous to have been gifted with a couple of chances in both of those knocks, but he was good enough to make the most of them. Even before he was dropped in the 5th ODI he was striking the ball crisply, caressing it through point and looking solid in defence. He gave that chance to Bopara off Swann (a tough one admittedly), and then attempted a slog a few deliveries later off Broad (?), but aside from that he was superb. Batted us towards victory, that's for sure.

Nathan played one match for New Zealand at the Twenty20 World Cup less than a year ago, and I guess would be a back-up option for the Black Caps if push came to shove.

As for Hamish having an 'H' on the back of his shirt well before James made his debut, not sure. I can't remember Michael Papps having an 'M' in case his brother got a call-up (extremely unlikely but just using it as an example).

I would doubt either would play to be honest. Who'd drop out? We don't seem to have anyone other than How and McCullum to open which hinders Hopkins' chances, while Taylor, Flynn and Elliott deserve the chance to cash in against a weaker opposition IMO ahead of Marshall.

Dropped catches can make huge impacts.

That said, I'd not want to be certain Styris wouldn't have played that near-faultless knock in the Fifth ODI had he not been given the chance to get a score in the Fourth. He's a good batsmen, and you can't keep good batsmen down forever.

This may sound amazing but...

Tim Southee hails from a little village called Maungakaramea, in Northland, New Zealand.

Maungakaramea is less then 15km from my parents' house, in the middle of the countryside. Not sure if he went to my school, Tauraroa Area,(he would have been about 10 when I left)
but his sister Jane did. She was in my class, and was quite an athlete too.

Uncanny, and sorry that I didn't mention it before. Just wasn't sure if he was the Southee I was thinking about.
