Cricket's not the only sport that has a "spirit" of conduct. Tennis & golf are similar and Japanese sports like sumo and judo. The Olympics are based on that whole ethos.

And not a moment too soon. The sport will be a better place after people stop having a chance to act holier than thou when it suits them, and playing the 'it's professional cricket' card when it doesn't.

No it won't be, that would make it more like US sports, and I don't think you will find too many cricket fans thinking that is a good idea. Anything goes, as long as it is in the rules? If that becomes the case then I will stop watching, that is for sure.

Maybe we're all looking at it the wrong way. Every ball which doesn't contravene the unwritten rules of sportsmanship is in fact played in the right spirit. So the vast majority of matches are played with the spirit of the game, it just doesn't stick in the memory because it's not controversial. So really sportsmanship is far from dead .

In football, most blatant incident I can think of was when the Italian dived in the final seconds of the last WC against Oz and conned the ref (who subsequently retired btw) and saved his team from penalty shoot-out. His fate was adoration by tens of millions of his countrymen and a WC winners medal.

Neill jumped in and tripped Grosso with his left hand, Grosso sold this poor piece of defending and was duly awarded a penalty. If Neill kept on his feet than there would have been no pen, was cast iron as soon as he went silly bollocks.

Neill mistimed the tackle, but wasn't due to make significant contact to warrant a penalty. Grosso took stock of the situation and stepped into him then went to ground. It was a dive. Not every poor tackle warrants a penalty.

Kewell meister would dive every week if he was fit enough, instead he does it every six months or so. Bout time he got injured actually...

I want all professional sports people to do whatever it takes to win, within the rules. And if they bend it a little bit, to win, I'm OK with that too.

Nah, just things that should be illegal. Sportsmanship should simply not exist, and most of it doesn't need to be legislated (e.g, walking when you think you're out).
