Having watched a replay of the incident, it's obvious that the English are receiving a disproportionate share of the blame for what, in effect, were totally legal actions
Elliot attempted a suicide run
Sidebottom ran directly to the ball and did not change course (as he is legally entitled to do)
There was a collision (it does happen)
Another fieldsman picks up the ball and the wickets are broken with Elliot miles out
There's an appeal
He's given out
Would there have been this fuss if it had happened at ,say, a time when the Kiwis were being thrashed?
Doubt it - I can just hear the commentators rabbiting on about how the innings has descended into a comedy of errors
Would there have been any fuss if Elliot was run out by either Sidebottom or the cover fieldsman IF he remained on his feet (as he almost certainly would've been)?
No
What Collingwood did was harsh but fair
No-one wanted the game to be decided that way but, if it had been, build a bridge ....
On the other hand, Vettori's reactions were nothing short of pathetic
Not shaking hands is spur of the moment and childish
However, basically accusing Sidebottom of cheating by "laying hands on another player" was completely out of order
There, I've defended a Pom. Dont expect to see it happen again
