Christ, seeing Croatia doing well to date in this tournament with a team way off the individual quality of England (but with obviously stronger team spirit) to back by the performances of South Korea in WC 02, Germany 02 & 06 & even Scotland in the EURO qualifiers. Just shows how England have wasted our talent in recent times while teams less talented have stood up.

But i have a sneaky feeling under Capello a revival is near..
*sighs*.

Surely by now you must realise that the England players just ain't that good. Talent is not just a footballing ability it's nous, it's knowing on the pitch how do dovetail into a team, not just be individuals. Our bunch of players don't have this, hence they're not world-class. There's only so much a manager can do. Capello has again tried Lamps and Gerard in midfield, because he assumes two players with such a rep will sort it out for themselves, yet we know they can't, again and again. Joe Cole (who I like), is the best option on the left, but that's only because all our other options are so piss-poor. He is not remotely a world-class left-sided midfield player. Owen and Becks have gone. So that leaves Rooney as the only forward player that would be considered world-class, and he's arguably gone backwards, and is certainly a secondary threat for United.

As for the defence, hmm, Rio's quite good I suppose.

This tourney has shown that there are many better teams in Europe then us, imho. The standard has not really been worsened by us not being there. We have players that under a manager who isn't inept should of qualified, but not much else. I'm mildly contented I can enjoy the tournament without the nutters in the press and on forums telling us how we're gonna win it this time.

Well Croatia can actually pass the ball to each other, which on front at least means their individual quality is better.
Well all of that is simply due to a strong work ethic by a group of players that over the past year. I reckon this is just a purple patch since they were too special after WC 98 when Boban & Suker left. Yes in the likes of Mordic, Kranjcar & Corluka (the only players i reckon from Croatia that would make our national side), but personally I didn't thing their play was even that superior to Scotland i recent times.

Which just proves my assertion & magnifies my frustration that ENG have wasted themselves this decade while other weakers teams have stood up on various occasions in major tournaments.

I still think that individually England have a lot of talent, which is shown by the various individuals at club level, however due to other factors it does not come together for England.

I do think that with a very good manager (as Capello clearly is), while he may not be able to win a tournament, performances will return to respectability. Only big (ish) decision of his that I have disagreed with thus far is leaving Carrick out, especially given we know that the central midfield as is just doesn't work.

Then how would you explain that for their respective clubs in high pressure matches just as or even more competitive than Internationals these same players have been able to show nous & ability to dovetail into teams?.

The problem with ENG this decade for me has just been as Sven came in with is fairly solid CV as coach & did pretty well in WC 02 with a pretty average side it was proved over the next two tournaments that his less than exhuberant style, faulty tactics in crunch situations really messed us up, then the FA stupidly picked his right hand man as coach and well you know the rest. Thus making ENG seem actually worse than we actually are.

Its funny how ENG get ridiculed in this country & around the world yet Spain seem to get off.

Has startted together as yet i don't think so?. But either way it was evident as far back as EURO 04 than Lamps & Stevie G could play together IMO since Stevie G wasn't allowed be his free-flowing self as at Liverpool always having to sacrifice himself for Lamps which was never good for ENG. Bad tactics by Sven since he just threw all the stars into a side had them playing differently from their clubs.

You look at Spain currently & Aragones to my knowledge has never started Xavi & Fabregas in the same mid-field, either Albelda & currently Senna as partnered Xavi now thats good, added to the fact that he has kept Raul out of the side even though he has had a fantastic season for Real. That shows a strong management & thats what we didn't get with Sven but what i expect from Capello.

Joe Cole (who I like), is the best option on the left, but that's only because all our other options are so piss-poor. He is not remotely a world-class left-sided midfield player.
Wouldn't say Walcott & Young are piss-poor, they two of them especially Walcott remind me of Cole post late 04 when he his skills were evident but just wasn't getting first team football. I personally would be very disappointed if Walcott didn't step up in the coming years.

Owen and Becks have gone. So that leaves Rooney as the only forward player that would be considered world-class, and he's arguably gone backwards, and is certainly a secondary threat for United.
No way should Becks & Owen be under-rated even if they are past their peaks. Owen may have lost a bit of pace but you give him space in front of goal & his predatory instincts still very much remain. While Becks even though world football has all these skillful wingers Becks regardless of his old fashion style remains oh so reliable because he does what he does best very efficiently.

Plus why would you say Wazza has gone backwards, i'd probably say he's improved given he has shown his versality to play out of position very well, plus howing very good signs that he could play as a lone striker just needs to work on his finishing.

As for the defence, hmm, Rio's quite good I suppose.
Ha, come on sir surely thats one area you have to admit that ENG beats most European sides in fairly comfortably in when it comes to quality depth. Do you not rate Terry, Woodgate, Carragher, King highly as centre-halves?

Agreed, but i'll take a slightly different view on us not being present. I wouldn't be giving teams who i know we are better than praise when i know if ENG could have done better if it weren't for mistakes of the past. But i will give respect to the major nations.

Nor has England's been.
Thats my point in recent years Scotland have beaten France twice in EURO 2008 qualifying, Greece have won EURO 04, South Korea & gotten to the WC semi-finals, Germany have gotten to WC semi-final an final. None better than ENG on an individual standpoint, but it just shows that ENG have wasted a talented era but hopefully it can be salvaged.

Word, he definately should be around the squad even if he doesn't start. But potentially the mid-field combo that Capello tried in France is the best possible one as we move forward into the WC qualifiers.

But thats good sign that we have a manager that has his views about a player even if he is performing well. You look at the situations recently with Raul for Spain & Guily for France, performing superbly but managers probably feeling they can cope without them.

If potentially the mid-field trio of Barry/Hargreaves/Gerrard works & Carrick keeps performaing for United. It would be much more refreshing football discussion than to have head banging frustartions of why average players like Downing, Phil etc keep getting picked.

They did well because they had more malleable foreign players to play around them. Our players are not flexible, our form of total-un-football doesn't work, against the big boys. There should be a number ofplayers in the side who mostly concentrate on ball-retention, which is why we need types like Hargreaves and Barry, possibly both.

Has startted together as yet i don't think so?. Capello picked them both against the USA, it was to use the commonly used venacular on here, dire. Yes the Spaniards are players who keep the ball, whomever they pick, he probably could pick Xavi and Fabregas together, and it would work better then Lampard and Gerard, becuase they can all retain the ball, he just hasn't yet in this tournament.[/QUOTE]

They're potentially both decent, but it's all just potential, ATM.

Yes, they were world-class, and they are still now the best players for their positions, for England, which show's we don't have any better, even now they've gone past their best. Depressing really.

Plus why would you say Wazza has gone backwards, i'd probably say he's improved given he has shown his versality to play out of position very well, plus howing very good signs that he could play as a lone striker just needs to work on his finishing.
Well you've answered your own question there, when he first burst on the scene I felt he was going to score many more goals for united (boo) and England (yay). Now he's the workhorse for Ronny, which wasn't what i had in mind for him when he burst on the scene.

Ha, come on sir surely thats one area you have to admit that ENG beats most European sides in fairly comfortably in when it comes to quality depth. Do you not rate Terry, Woodgate, Carragher, King highly as centre-halves?
Terry, too slow, imo. Woodgate, King too injury-prone to be considered, Carraghers retired from international football isn't he?EDIT: OH I see Halz has dealt with that one. :) No real R-B and Cashley seemed better at Arsenal. Second best left-back at Chelsea.

Anyway, we probably won't agree on this, and this is discussion for Euro2008, so england talk is irrelevant. So we should knock it on the head. Besides sooner or later you'll start talking about Abonglahar, Noble and Parker, and I may cry:)

One of the best games so far that. If Romania beat Holland Romania goes through. If Holland win tonight they'll be group winners.

I don't wanna tempt fate too much, but Jesus, France look ordinary. A shot, ageing team. How old is Thuram? 50?
