Australian Domestic Off-Season Thread 2008

Guess that is an incentive to do better then the import.
Horse for different courses, really.

Would really love to have more overseas players in Sri Lankan domestic cricket. Mainly just to improve the standard. But if the main goal is to bring in bigger crowds then it is waste of time, taking a spot from a local player.

Just read Craig's post again. Don't know why I made that reply to it. But it would be a bit hard for a local to do better then big name international. Even in country cricket most players seem to struggle to do better then average South African domestic cricketers with a lot of experience.

Haha. Wonderful attitude. Hard to keep the competition going if there is no money. There was serious consideration a few years back that all Pura Cup matches would be moved from The 'Gabba to Alan Border Field due to very poor crowds, and if that were to happen than the AFL could get there way on drop-in pitches.
There is, and never has been, any money in the Pura Cup Competition. From Cricket Australia's point of view, it is a solely a vehicle that helps bring the best players to the fore for selection for the country. Each state has it in their mission statement that they aim to provide players for the next level; hence they loathe to give a spot away that could be used by a local to an international player.

NSW's fans have nothing to worry about, Ed Cowan has adjusted to Scottish conditions and is averaging 210 after 4 games with a 163 and a 142. :p

Good to see Wade Irvine get a rookie contract with Tassie, thats at least three ACT players (Death- WA, Irivine- Tas and Croswaithe- NSW) get rookie contracts this season. With John Rogers and a few others still doing well in Sydney the argument our playing talent isn't good enough is pretty much dead in the water now.

Doubt Dickson will get a call up. Made a few runs early in the year, then missed out completely in both 2nd XI and District cricket after that.

Simon, rumour is that Perera from ACT will be playing in Melbourne this year.

Ah good, pretty happy I wont have to face him this season then!
When we played Tuggeranong last season he didnt bowl to me cause they were saving him for the one day semi the next day, he did manage to almost kill our top order the week before though.

Really, really happy to see Cooper and O'Brien going to South Australia. I think O'Briend can be decent at FC level and Cooper has had potential for ages. best batsman I have ever bowled to in a game. Harder to get out than Phil Hughes back in the day.

Redbacks move on Khan

May 28, 2008 SOUTH Australia has offered a contract to star Pakistani batsman Younis Khan to play for the Redbacks next season.

Khan, a 58-Test veteran, is considering the offer to play for South Australia in the Australian domestic season until Christmas, and return should the Redbacks feature in the finals in March.

Redbacks duties would not impinge on his Pakistan commitments, South Australia coach Mark Sorell has said.

"Younis is currently one of the world's best batsmen. Recruiting him is an important step in our recruiting strategy and an opportunity that presents itself as too good to miss," Sorell said.

Khan, 30, has scored 15 centuries and averages more than 49 in Test cricket.

Fast bowler Damien Wright signs with Vic
ABC - May 28, 2008, 8:00 pm

In domestic cricket, Tasmanian fast bowler Damien Wright has signed to play with Victoria.

Wright was offered another contract with the Tigers this season but rejected it.

Tasmanian cricket coach, Tim Coyle, says while it's disappointing to lose Wright, he's confident about the depth of the Tigers' bowling attack.

"Its disappointing to lose, you know, a player that's been with us for a long time and been a very successful cricketer," he said.

"But I can understand the motivation behind him looking to move and we wish him all the best."

Will be very interesting to see how Younis Khan goes. Personally hope he makes big runs, just to spice things up a little for South Australia.
