Don't know where else to post this, but is anyone else more than a bit annoyed about the fact that Cricinfo and other websites aren't meant to be covering the IPL? Rightfully scathing article from Sambit Bal:

Our worst fears have come to pass. Cricinfo, and all other cricket websites, who serve millions of cricket fans, have been subjected to a crassly discriminatory set of regulations by the Indian Premier League that seek to severely undermine our ability to cover the event. Cricinfo's journalists have been barred from entering the press box, and it has been made clear that pictures agencies will not be able to sell us match pictures.

Incredibly idiotic stuff. They have the ability to get their product beamed all over the world with massive worldwide publicity and instead they choose to shoot themselves in the foot.

That is what happens when you put money first and the sport next... They are slowly losing focus of what they are actually trying to do and it is going to bite them where it will hurt them most, THE MONEY..... :@

the BIG reason why Mumbai may not play the two SL pacers consistently [unless forced to] is because it affects the balance wrt the quota of four international players in the side, i.e jayasuriya & pollock will play most of the games, 1 SL pacers and 1 batsman or Wk like Ronchi appears to be the better choice .... and Pollock has a decent record with the bat

As we can see that your strategies are based upon a player not lasting long and the tail coming into play, which is not a valid assumption

And best players do bat higher up, esp in a format like the 20T
Why Ronchi? He's just an obscure Australian domestic cricketer! Pinal Shah is good enough! Pollock, Jayasuriya, Malinga and Dilhara are frontliners for their teams, and it makes better sense to pick them. Besides, when you already have Pollock, why pick an extra batsman?

The final four overs require a six-hitter, and the Number Seven position needs someone who can negotiate with the tail well- not feed them to the bowlers or force them to hit sixes- simply by batting out a maiden over.

It's not so much a case of 'best players in the top', but 'best players for the situation'. Rather than have chaos in the lower middle-order, I'd have inexperienced, under-rated Indian players in the middle. Remember the T20 World Champs semi-final? After Hayden Gilchrist, Ponting, Hussey and Symonds were gone, the Aussies were facing Joginder Sharma in the final overs. Whom did they have? Brad Haddin, who looked clueless and miscast in the middle. Likewise one Misbah-ul-haq, who doesn't have the knockout punch that his position needed. We don't want that in this team.

Video Review:

Chennai Superkings- Not seen. Anyone?

Deccan Chargers- Beware! You don't want to face these bulls alone! It's got a good battle-charger theme to it. For some reason, it comes 45 times during trading hours on CNBC.

Bangalore Royal Challengers- This is just plain cheesy. And makes little sense. Just like all ads of such products.

Kolkata Knightriders- Incredibly cheesy. Plain show of money and star power.

Kings XI Punjab- Didn't sit through the whole video. Bandwidth issues. Started off well, though.

Rajasthan Royals- Bandwidth issues. Can't comment.

Delhi Daredevils- Not seen

Mumbai Indians- This is one ad with a lot of mass appeal, though a little cliched. Possibly the best with the Chargers.

It's not Ronchi or Pinal but 1 batsman or Ronchi, who can play as a batsman too, if Mumbai want Pinal to be the WK or vice versa. I believe Ronchi has a nice record and thats why he is in the Mumbai team .... Why pick an extra batsmen? because 20T is more abt batting

and best players are usually the ones who handle most situations .... i don't understand why do you think that there will be a chaos in the lower order, why do you assume that one of the guys in the middle order would be not around till the end and that it would be two tailenders playing at the end!!!! It's not like if the openers gets out first, then number 3 and then number 4 lol .... you can have one of the top 5-6 playing till the end duh

That example of Australia shows bad cricket. there is little the tail can do when your top players get out cheaply. the tail is only playing to last the 20 overs in such scenario

and as I said, initially, Mumbai is likely to go with

1 to 5 ----> Sachin, Jayasuriya, Uthappa, Prince and Pollock
one of the above would be playing till almost the end most of the times, so your point on tail not being taken care of is not valid

6 to 8 ----> here they can have the domestic players, who are good and can tank the bowling

9 to 11 ----> Bhajji, a SL pacer, Nehra

Kallis, Boucher and Prince contrary to CSA early decision on making the players return home have instead been allowed to stay in India with their IPL franchises. All three players were deemed as not required by their South African franchise for the Pro 20 semi finals this weekend. Prince unsurprisingly was never in the mix to play considering the Cobras have the likes of Smith, Gibbs and Duminy but the omissions of Kallis and Boucher was surprising, especially the latter for the Cobras have had a revolving door policy with wicket-keepers this year.

Loots Bosman was apparently requested by Mumbai to fly out today but he also can't make it until at least next week due to domestic commitments. Bosman is incidentally in great 20/20 form (currently averaging over 50 with a strike-rate close to 150) and it will be interesting to see if he gets a first team gig.

Both Sri Lankan pacers are injured (?) and I can't see Prince getting a game over the likes of Ronchi or Bosman. Ronchi has an insane strike-rate whilst Bosman has a great average, Prince has neither.

that one is for the initial games

Bosman is not available .... Fernando is .... there is no news on Malinga

i guess, Mumbai will probably start out with Prince but yeah Ronchi is a good bet too

The Red Skins, a professional cheerleading team that cheerlead for the NFL in the US are coming to Bangalore! Our evergreen Vijay Mallya has struck up a deal with the cheerleading team to fly them to Bangalore and cheer for the Bangalore Royal Challengers.............

Good lordie that's awesome. At least Bangalore might have something entertaining about them now [sorry mb ;)]

Also Sachin's injury it seems is so bad he's had to pull out of carrying the Olympic torch and is a doubt for Sunday's game :(

UK media seem to think Sachin has pulled out due to the Tibet issue not because of injury.

Ah, here they seem to think it's because he can't run right now. Said they're expecting official word from him or his agentr tommorow.

Chennai - Nothing except the elevator IPL ad. Seems to be pretty disorganised as far as promotions go. Apparently nothing even on Tamil media about them.

Delhi - Akshay ads are pretty cool.

Let's take a look at the teams from the South

the B'lore squad

Key players: Dravid, Joshi, Zaheer, Praveen, Kumble, Jaffar

Internationals: C'paul, Misbah, Ross, White, Razzak, Boucher, Kallis, Noffke, Styen

The team that they would field initially

1 to 5 ----> Jaffar, White, Dravid, Kallis, Boucher
6 to 8 ----> Kohli, Praveen, Joshi [or other domestic player]
9 to 11 ----> Zaheer, Kumble, Noffke

the team's strength is bowling

the Hybad squad .... competes with B'lore as one of the two major IT hubs

Key players: Laxman, Rohit, RP Singh, Venugopalan, Banger

Internationals: Gilly, Symonds, Gibbs, Afridi, Chamara, Styris, Vaas, Zoysa

1 to 5 ----> Gilly, Gibbs, Rohit, Symo, Laxman
6 to 8 ----> Afridi/Styris, Venugopal, Banger
9 to 11 ----> Teja, RP, Vaas

a nice squad with some exciting players

the Chennai squad

Key players: Dhoni, Badri, Raina, Balaji, Joginder, Parthiv

Internationals: Hayden, A Morkel, Murali, Oram, Fleming, Hussey, Ntini

won't bother with the playing 11 .... some good international players but too bad that only four can play .... Other positive is Dhoni and his captaincy

Overall, Neither of the 3 sides from the South excites me
