Agree with Blakey. Was also looking for a meatheaded "I hate Aussies" reaction I suspect.Lol. I posted him up in another forum and Darcy Waltergrave picked up on my comments and raised it in Radiosport today in the ND match.
"Word is he got 'bribed' over to New Zealand to play cricket for us, filling in the problematic number 3 batting spot position.
Anyone know his background? He is an Aussie youth cricketer, and his mom is a Kiwi.
Currently playing in the ND vs CD match and just scored a quickfire 67 off 71 deliveries.
Might be a bolter? "
That's what I said.
Pretty sick of people getting excited over one innings from a no name player - but suppose it is symptomatic of having a pretty shallow player pool.Agree with Blakey. Was also looking for a meatheaded "I hate Aussies" reaction I suspect.
I'd like to see him score at the University Oval and greentops like it though, Napier is not the best indicator.
Congrats to Brent Arnel, second 5-fer of the season IIRC. ANOTHER good bowler from ND. Sherlock bowled tidily for CD picking up 2/37 off 12. Took a 4-fer last game. Please stay un-injured.
Again - simply reaffirms how poor our talent pool is.Well Darcy was asking the commentator of the ND game since he was batting then.
Well I heard about Merchant from an article a while back when they were covering overseas players coming into our system. No name now, but NZC did persuade him to come over, rather that pursue the more lucrative honors of playing in Australia FC.
Only a few games under the belt however. Who knows.
Other than that, not much from the wicket it seems like. A really flat one. Arnel is unlucky with so many injuries prior to his debut.
Hmm Merchant has done nothing before today IIRC and since its at Napier I'll take it with a grain of salt.Again - simply reaffirms how poor our talent pool is.
And indicates he's probably not good enough to play for Aussie.
But what the hey we need all the second best players we can get - so how bout you go start a petition to have him in the touring squad to go to England. Run run!
Why do you say that? Leslie is pretty certain and a radio broadcaster seems to think he's onto a winner.Hmm Merchant has done nothing before today IIRC and since its at Napier I'll take it with a grain of salt.
Each team in this comp has about two or three future test possibilities, Merchant isn't one of NDs.
Just isn't proven enough yet, though I last looked at his record some time ago I admit. Most players have enough ability for tests, its just many crack under the pressure or have technical issues or some other issue. Why do you say that? Leslie is pretty certain and a radio broadcaster seems to think he's onto a winner.
Other favourite? I haven't listed any player as my favourite.Okay, Merchant is useless. Good post 'Blake'.
In fact, he's so useless he's not even listed in the Northern Districts website profiles. Oh wait, could it be he only just arrived in New Zealand?
Should we talk about your other favourite player Sherlock?
Is that directed at me or Blakey?Okay, Merchant is useless. Good post 'Blake'.

Think it is to me. He seems a little wound up.Is that directed at me or Blakey?
Anyways my reply to Blakey just before this should be sufficient answer.
And go Richard Sherlock!!!
You should have seen him last night..Think it is to me. He seems a little wound up.
Nail. Head. Hit it.You should have seen him last night..
WRT Merchant, I think the reason he's getting alot of hype is:
-he's young
-he's Australian
-he's from Leslies area
I seem to remember two ther highly rated Aussies. Their names were Lou Vincent and Mathew Sinclair.
No, because Blake is the smart one. The chosen one Blake. Poster of the year Blake. Much respect.Other favourite? I haven't listed any player as my favourite.
Don't let me stop you from waxing lyrical about new up and coming players. Go knock yourself out. But do your neighbours a favour and get some vas - wouldn't want to start a fire now.
Its in the England in New Zealand thread.Nail. Head. Hit it.
What was he like last night?
So bored of all the over hyping going on.
Issue is the holiday season, three formats to play and our dodgy weather. Need more Global Warming IMO.No, because Blake is the smart one. The chosen one Blake. Poster of the year Blake. Much respect.
*Sorry Flem this dude is pissing me off a little bit with his-pretentious-not-helpful-remarks. Don't mind me.
NZ domestic season and the only game progressing along is ND versus CD, and it's not even worth mentioning both sides are bottom of the table! So I thought might as well chuck names and see if anything sticks. Especially because ND dropped Yovich from the lineup to fit in this Merchant to the side.
Btw, how many "tests" like games are played in other domestics, like say Australia and English scene. Because I notice we only play 8 games per season. And half of it is cut in between the 20 20s and List A games. That's surely not enough to make batsmen work out techniques etc... ?
He's not getting that much hype. Darcy asked Alan Mclolan and he has no clue who he is aside from the fact that he's playing in the game Alan is commentating. You should have seen him last night..
