Hogg really looked a desperate man out there today. When Roy is consistently outbowling you then maybe the writing is on the wall for you.

If they go to Pakistan he might get a place on tour by default when McGain is his only serious competition for the spinners spot. The Aussie attack could have some transitional years ahead with regards to quality spin.

I think that it was a great decision made by gilly to retire because it helps Australia develop a side that will be at its peak from the ashes in2009 to the world cup in 2011.

IMO australia should be looking to develop a side for the next 4 years to take them to a 4th straight world cup victory

Have we seen a series with such a high standard of memorable, hard-fought cricket in recent times? For me, each test revealed something new - Melbourne proved just how crucial ample preparation is on overseas tours, Sydney made yet another mockery of the ICC's "Elite Panel", Perth showed that Australia may just come back to earth a bit after losing so many legendary cricketers and Adelaide confirmed that Australia will still be bloody difficult to beat simply because they are Australia, professional and relentless (of course, the likes of Hayden, Ponting and Lee do help). I'll let the Aussies talk about the Aussies, but Brett Lee was sheer class throughout the series. He's improved so, so much, runs in and gives it everything all day long and importantly seems like a great person as well. Certainly my favorite Aussie cricketer now, especially with Gilly walking out on a glorious career.

I think he could do a much better job than hogg IMO, the plan should be to have mcgill playing for another 3 years and in that time try to develop a young spinner, dan cullan and the other south australiam (forgot his name) look good, there is also some potential for cameran white as well as he is a good batter.

hogg dosent seem to have much variation at all and IMO mcgill is a much better bowler we just need 3 more years out of him
Are you talking about Cullen Bailey....I'm sure Dan Cullen has more of a chance because Cullen Bailey hasn't seemed to get a game.

Pretty hard for Hogg to play his first full series in however long against India though, and on 3 pitches where Harbhajan also bowled meh, and Kumble took wickets but didn't run through a side either.
I don't think he's the long term answer, but maybe he needs another go against sides which just aren't as good vs spin. Pakistan haven't played Aussie wrist spinners well in recent times (granted they have been better than Hogg), but maybe we're being a bit quick to dig the knife in here.

Ricky Ponting is a good batsman as well. It doesn't mean he's a test standard spinner though. Surely you can see that.
yeh but white is a better bowler than pointing, all i am saying is I think he has potential.a good leg spinner that can but would be like finding gold.

you think hes at poitings level
He's a bit better than Ponting, granted, but he's closer to being Ponting-standard with the ball than he is to being test standard. He's a batsman who can bowl a bit these days. He should never, ever be thought of as a bowler in a test.

Thoughts on a combined XI?

I haven't put a great deal of thought into it, but would think something like:
Sehwag
Hayden
Laxman
Tendulkar
Hussey
Symonds
Gilchrist
Kumble
Lee
Johnson
RP Singh

Cameron White is an excellent leg-spinner.

Excellent, that is, if you're the opposition in a game of Twenty20 and he bowls all four of his allotted overs at you.

I would have Ishant Sharma for Johnson. He didn't have the wickets to show for it but at times he was superb. That spell v Ponting was one of the special things most people will take away from the series as well.
