XI's that play for your life

OK, so hypothetically, you've got a match with your life on the line.

Ideally, who are the XI blokes you'd want playing for you? Who would you trust to bat for long, long periods of time and keep their concentration.

I'll have a bit more of a think about this and get back to you people...

Off the top of my head...

Javed Miandad (a true man of crisis)

Steve Waugh (great pressure player with nerves of steel)

Shane Warne (always rises to the occasion)

Imran Khan (the bigger the challenge, the better he responds)

Brian Lara (capable of anything, has a record of scoring well when the chips are down)

Wasim Akram/Malcolm Marshall (have the variety and skill to get any batsman, anytime)

My Team to play for my life

1. G.Boycott
2. L.Hutton
3. D.Bradman (Not defensive but so good that it doesn't matter)
4. A.Border
5. S.Waugh
6. G.Sobers
7. K.Miller (I want some of Miller's luck and also generally only performed well in a crisis)
8. R.Marsh
9. R.Hadlee
10. S.Warne/C.Grimmett (Grimmett if a draw is good enough to save yourself, Warne if you need to win)
11. S.F.Barnes

You prefer a funeral?
Well firstly I'd want an actual team that plays together, because cumulative teams lack the 'chemistry' or whatever - see Aus vs World XI. And secondly India seem to perform pretty well when they really have a passion to win, like in Perth coming back from a controversial Sydney test.

Fair enough mate but I was just putting up a fantasy scenario, don't read too much into it. But you're right I agree with you.

If that's your criteria, I'd have been tempted to pick Waugh's team than won 16 on the trot, or Ponting's team that did the same, or Lloyd's West Indians who held the record for consecutive wins before Waugh.

Or Bradman's Invincibles...

For actual teams I'd have gone with either the invincibles or Lloyds teams as well. The invincibles because it is the best team Bradman played in and Lloyd's because I am reasonably sure they went on a 5 year streak of not losing a live test although I could be wrong so don't shoot me.

Wouldn't it basically be the same as an all time world XI?
Nah. This is just the team aiming for the most reliable not-loss. I'd have Kallis in there, for example, whereas I wouldn't dare having him in an all-time World XI (well, not until he retires and everyone else realises what a ridiculously awesome cricketer he is :p).

From people who played in last 30 years,

1. Geoff Boycolt - will not give his wicket away at any cost
2. Sunil Gavaskar - same , but bit more class is about him that Boycs
3. Rahul Dravid - the wall, wil bat and bat on
4. Ricky Ponting - not defensive at all, but scores when there's a crisis
5. Jaques Kallis - Never gives his wicket away, and a big scorer too. Keeps bowling good lengths too
6. Steve Waugh (c) - Another fighter, will clinch in to the last of the straws. Good defensive bowler too.
7. Anrew Flower / Hashan Tillekaratne (wk) - Die hard fellows like Waugh. Never gives their wickets away, thorns in the flesh of the oppositions. Good wicket keepers too. Flower is the better bat, Hashan is the better keeper / fielder
8. Shaun Pollock - He'll bowl reentless line and length for you, and will keep the runs down. If the wicket is helpful, will get wickets too. He'll be the odd man with batting, because he's very attacking.
8. Chaminda Vaas - He'll be the left arm version of Pollock, relenless and work-horse like and never tiring. He's also a batsman when in is mighty dificult to dislodge
10. Glenn McGrath - He'll bowl on a coin all day, if he can get wickets then he'll get it, otherwise he'll bore the batsman until they are out
11. Muttiah Muralitharan - The champion of marathon spells. Whether he takes wickets or not, will wheel away over after over

Yeah, as said for most people there is a difference. I generally think that the best way to make sure you don't lose a match is to go out and take it away from the opponent and win it, so I've not changed my team much - Steve Waugh in for Viv Richards is the only concession to "gritty resistance" for me.
