That's if his body holds together for two weeks. My concern this summer is that so many top 20 players are injured or out of form. Nadal is the obvious one, i think he'll crash out by the fourth round, you can usually expect someone from the 5-20 rankings to challenge in the later rounds here but with Gasquet, Haas, Berdych, Blake, Murray, Gonzalez, Ljubicic and Robredo basically being injured or playing rubbish towards the end of last year I dont see many threats.

Maybe this time around some guys from lower in the rankings might come through and make the quarters or semis, possibly a few like Kohlschreiber, Mathieu, Simon or Mahut.

ASB Open on TV at the moment, a few reasonably good players there too.
Yeah, we generally get a pretty good field in our tournaments considering they're only Tier 4 (womens) and Tier 3 (mens, IIRC) events. I've never been to the women's tournament, but I've been to the mens about 6 or 7 times (I used to be a tennis player, IIRC we got cheap tickets sometimes). Have seen some good players over the years - Marcelo Rios, Goran Ivanisivic, Tommy Robredo, Mario Ancic, Juan Carlos Ferrero etc, and I think Federer was here when he was young too. Playerd on one of the back courts IIRC.

Was good to see Marina Erakovic winning today, first Kiwi girl to make the quarters here for 18 years I think they said.

On another note, that women on the commentary (Nicky Tippins or something) is a national embarassment. Utterly awful accent and sounds like she's talking to a bunch of 3 year-olds. So bad.

Ana Ivanovic is playing some horrible tennis heading into the Australian Open. Sad to see after a great 2007 from her :(

Good to see Tsonga beat Hewitt, just like he did before Wimbledon last year. Good player and will mature into a top class one soon IMO.

Murray reaches the final in Doha, beating Davydenko 6-4 6-3. Should win as he's facing Wawrinka.
Warwinka is pretty decent, had a bad injury early last year but he's good enough to be top 15-20. He's got the game to beat someone like Murray i think.

Marina Erakovic did bloody well in the ASB Classic, some very impressive performances.

Nadal gets pumped by Youzhny and he may want to lift his fitness/form/attitude if he wants to do anything at the Aus open.

Anyone else see the Hopman cup final?

Now I'll openly admit I don't like Serena Williams, but she is quite simply an immense doubles player. Would clean up all the grand slams if she found a good partner imo.

Expecting Henin to win the womens Aust. open, and I'll predict an upset in the mens with Djokovic to win his first slam. Is anyone going to run a predictions thread? (meaning, I'm interested, but to damn lazy to run one :p)

Also, does anyone know much about Joe Sirriani? I was impressed by the match I saw him play against Llodra (although he lost). Obviously he still needs a lot of improvement, but this summer seems to be a coming of age of sorts for him.

From memory didn't she and Venus win the Gold Medal for doubles at the Sydney Olympics? As each country can only have two singles players I think Seles and Davenport played for US and the Williams sisters played in the doubles, but I may be wrong.

I guess i'll run it, shouldn't have many interuptions this tournament, except maybe on the middle weekend. Can't see Federer not winning it, but you never know. As for the Women's, probably Henin.

He's played a lot of tournament's on the Challenger and Future's tours, I think he's been living in Europe for a few years and is peaking at 32! Doubt we will see much more of him but you never know, Aussies always seem to do well around this time of year and nothing else for the rest of the seasons, guys like Smeets, Healey etc... produce good results in January and shut up shop for the rest of the year.

Haha, he's 32? Thought it was 22...hence the mild excitement he may come good a little further down the track. Agreed about the likes of Smeets & Healey, it's quite disappointing really.

Guccione and Luzcak could almost be in that category as well, except they have performed slightly better in the past 12 months...

I'm going to go ahead and say it, James Blake is ****.

And yes I did lose money on a bet due to him, but that doesn't make my point any less valid.

been saying that for years!

Federer and Haas have both withdrawn from Kooyong, really I have a feeling we are in for a sub-standard Australian Open with all these top players struggling in one way or another. It's hard to even see where the darkhorses are going to come from...

Lol, I like Monfils, but it won't happen. He'll never amount to anything great.
