Players claiming catches

Frankly speaking i can't see any player claiming a dubious catch unless he doesn't think he has taken the catch cleanly because in today's time with so much technology around a player knows that if he cheats he would be caught for sure.
I agree with Richard that Clarke didn't look sure whether he took the catch or not but as soon as the catch was taken Hopkins was on his way rather than waiting there and the on-field umpires also gave him out rather than asking the 3rd umpire to have a look.

Well we all know you're one of Australia's (and Clarke's) biggest cheerleaders.

I SUGGEST PEOPLE REALISE THIS POST IS IN JEST, PARAPHRASING\PARODYING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally I think it was dropped but I don't blame Clarke. It IS hard totell sometimes whether you've been playing for a week or 50 years. I think Technology should be allowed in the case of uncertain catches and uncertain edges. The commentary box has it so the umpires should be allowed it.

Despicable behaviour by the commetators though, they're the real biased ****s IMO.

And Fiery, go and have a brandy and calm down. Fantasize about the hiding we'll give Bangladesh.

You can write as many paragraphs as you like, D.H.Lawrence. The fact is the little Aussie bugger cheated. He claimed a catch that wasn't!.....(need any more full stops?)
Missed this before. Really is one of the worsts posts I've ever seen TBH.

Having seen the catch (haven't seen the footage of Clarkes reaction though) I don't think he caught it, but can certainly see why there was doubt about it.

The difference -- and I'm not saying it's right -- is that people assume the fielder knew whether it was a catch or not, and therefore it's more of a blatant act than letting the umpire decide if it's out or not.
But it may be a false assumption, because he was diving forward and the ball is below his eye-line.
I disagree with Fiery here in that I don't think people always know that the ball has bounced or not. Mark waugh on the radio last night mentioned an instance in the 93 (I think) Ashes series, where he said a ball hadn't carried to him, it was given not out, and later replays howed that in fact it had carried. He said that sometimes you just can't know.

It's still up to the umpire to make a decision on whether the catch was taken, though. I don't see a player claiming a catch as anything other than an appeal, really, and appeals happen all the time when those appealing know the wicket should not be given.
The umpire in this instance was about 3 metres away. Given how it looked on replay, I'm astonished he didn't refer it.

Generally, I don't believe Clarke has cheatedin this instance. Let's assume there's a temptation to do so. Why would he do it at 5/60 odd chasing 282? I know this sounds dire (or more aptly in this instance Dyer), but if I was going to do it, I'd do it at 5/260 with 3 overs to go, not at 5/60 with a bloke on 9 who's likely to go on and make 11 at best.

So, I have no problem accepting it wasn't out, but I don't believe he knowingly cheated.

He didn’t really have one, didn’t celebrate and had a look of someone who probably just dropped the ball.

Although, Clarke’s 'aloofness' maybe down to the fact that the game was over, Hopkins can’t bat and he doesn’t like celebrating cheap wickets like some of his team-mates do (Brett Lee).

Clarke never even "claimed" the catch as such today, he merely didn't suggest he thought he'd grassed it.

That's the same as standing your ground, really. If he'd made a clear "I've caught this" indication then that would be analogous to touching your shoulder after the ball's hit your glove.
If you're unsure you say so like Hussey did in the second test against Sri Lanka. Clarke threw the ball to the umpire which means he caught it.

And as if he wouldn't know. It's understandable if the ball kisses the grass and goes straight into your hands but both hands were on top of the ball pushing it into the ground. He never had control of it.

I rate Craigos' early prediction of nothing happening to the golden boy.
