I can't believe I am actually looking forward to this match. Twenty20 which I don't like. Craig McMillan has retired and McCullum looks set to open.

Feel bad for the guy TBH. Seems a nice bloke and its a shame he was put in a situation where he was out of his depth because he's an excllent domestic bowler.
Yeah, you think they would have let him stay on tour and just watch and learn a bit. Seems harsh to send the guy home

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Nah, he shouldn't be anywhere near the side. Time to discard him for good, no matter how good his domestic performances, he simply isn't up to it.

Yeah it also interests me that guys with domestic records of his caliber don't have at least some international success. Its not just a NZ problem it happens all over the world. O'Brien has a reasonable amount of pace and swing though even though he's innacurate but even innacurate bowlers can get wickets. Is it a mental thing?

Probably nerves and shattered confidence

Thought it would be a mental thing. IIRC he and Mason are the kings of domestic cricket wheras Franklin and Martin, whilst being good, haven't had the same success. I know international commitments have skewed it a bit but Franklin and Martin have played alot of domestic games and have good records and success in internationals but the guys with better domestic records don't.

Dunno, O'Brien just doesn't seem to have enough tricks in his bag or pace to trouble international players. Some guys just can't make the step up. He's a prime example. Can't see him ever getting another opportunity now either regardless of domestic form

Not Terrible
Maybe give O'Brien a shot in NZ if their is a spot available. May see him do a bit better than a SA tour.

"Gareth Hopkins and Michael Mason have been left out of the New Zealand squad for tonight's Twenty/20 match against Australia in Perth."

YES!

"The full New Zealand side is Daniel Vettori (captain), Lou Vincent, Brendon McCullum, Jamie How, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Jacob Oram, Mathew Sinclair, Kyle Mills, Jeetan Patel, Mark Gillespie, and Chris Martin."

So who's going to miss out? Martin or Patel would be where it comes down too. And I really think it should be Patel, Martin is just cannon fodder in this format.

Good to see NZ playing their best side out of that touring party. There is no reason that it shouldn't be a good contest.
